Exercise Not Only Makes People Smarter, It Makes Them Happier

San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) April 3, 2007

Exercise, a word that most Americans view as torment in their quest for a healthy body, now provides greater benefits besides strong muscles. A recent Newsweek article titled "Can Exercise Make you Smarter?" discussed current medical findings how exercise increases brainpower. The same can also be said of how exercise can have a positive affect on a person's emotional state.

According to The National Institute on Mental Health, approximately 40 million American adults ages 18 and older, or about 18.1 percent of people in this age group in a given year, have an anxiety disorder. "Anxiety prevents us from being happy, can cause physical ailments, and keeps us from taking healthy risks that may improve the quality of our live, says Bob Livingstone, psychotherapist and founder of www. boblivingstone. com. "At the simplest level, we spend too much time worrying… and even moderate exercise can help reduce those feelings." says Livingstone.

There are now many studies that conclude that physical exercise brings a state of wellbeing and calmness, and some research shows that working out as little as 15 minutes enables a person to reach this state of wellbeing. Livingstone comments, "Dealing with emotional trauma, whether subtle or extreme, doesn't seem possible while sedentary. Exercise, and most importantly the endorphins that it creates within the body, helps bring an emotionally calm mental state were people can more effectively face the issues that are troubling them."

"A regular exercise program will help ease a person's state of worry and they will notice that the confusion they are experiencing brought on by their anxiety will decrease or dissipate," says Livingstone. "Creating a long lasting feeling of calmness won't happen overnight, but even just one session of physical exercise will make a person feel happier. Don't believe me? Try it yourself."

(PRWEB) August 11, 2004

True to its name of being SWIFT in launching new molecules at a fast pace, the leading bulk drug manufacturer exporter Ind-Swift Laboratories Limited is launching an anti-diarroheal molecule ‘Nitazoxanide’ for the first time in Asia. This is the first molecule approved by the FDA in last 40 years for Gardia and is the only drug approved for the treatment of Diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum in children aged 12 month to 11 years of age.

The molecule is being launched in India by the Company within a year of its Global launch by the Originator. The Company has recently obtained the DCGI approval for the launch of this drug in India.

Confirming the news Mr. V. K.Mehta told that “launching of Nitazoxanide is a part of Company’s business plan of introducing products for the first time in India”. He said that “ Most of the available therapies have Low cure rates, Low Resistance, frequent Dosages and the duration of the treatment is also long which are not patient convenient and cost effective.” He disclosed that the Nitazoxanide is relatively a more effective drug developed in-house by the Company’s R&D which is a 3 day therapy against the conventional therapy of one week.

Romark Laboratories the originator for this molecule under the Brand name Alinia have predicted the US market size of this molecule to be US$ 100 millions in the first year with expected annual growth rate of over 40% . The US market is also expected to grow substantially on backdrop of the Originator entering into strategic marketing tie-up with Cardinal Health, Inc. a fortune 500 Company.

Ind-Swift which already has a thrust on the exports and is present in 40 countries across the globe, targets a sales of over Rs. 100 millions in the very first year of its launch and a growth by 50% over next three years when the Company see the sales figure to touch Rs. 350 millions. The Company is equipped for the launch of the drug in the Latin American, Asian & African markets.

Ind-Swift laboratories limited is a one of the largest manufacturers of the API and advanced intermediates in Domestic and International market. It has recently built up large scale capacities for all the Complex molecules where it is present. Over the last few years, ISLL has shifted its focus to complex molecules and development on non - infringing processes, so as to minimize the risk of severe competition and commoditisation. The company has launched and built global scale capacities in several high potential molecules like Clarithromycin, Fexofenadine and Atorvastatin – ISLL is in fact the largest producer of Clarithromycin (around 15% of global capacity) and Fexofenadine in the World after the innovators.

The company is also among the first few players to launch other complex products like Clopidogrel, Candesartan, Atorvastatin, Pioglitazone and Citalopram. ISLL has invested around INR 250 mn over the last three to four years to build capacities (it now has six manufacturing plants) and make its facilities cGMP compliant and approvable by regulatory bodies like the US FDA and UK MCA. The company has already filed its first DMF in the US market and expects it to be ready for US FDA inspection over the next few months.

As per IMS Mat December 2003 the Indian market size for the Anti-infective segments which includes the important therapies of Anti-Diarroeheal, Anti-Amoebicide, Anti-helminths, Anerobicides, Trichomonacides is over Rs. 5190 millions. Out of this total market, molecules Tinidazole and Metronidazole alone accounts for the 63% of the size and both these molecules are de-growing. Nitazoxanide would have a direct impact on the sales of these molecules. Moreover clinical trials and comparative studies are underway for albendazole or mebendazole. Nitazoxanide is also a boon for the immuno-suppressants patients and HIV patients where trials are underway.

The next new launches planned by the Company includes an Anti-Alcoholic drug (sales of US$ 16.2 mn in Europe), a molecule for Breast Cancer (a US$ 100mn product). Besides the company is also going to launch two molecules from Statin range, which include an Anti-Hyperlipidemic drug with World market of over USD 5 bn by 2005. 3 of these new products are slated to be commercially launched during the current quarter.

The company has recently filed 1 DMF with USFDA and 2 Common Technical Documents (CTDs) with European authorities. In addition ISLL has already filed 2 new patents and its R&D is in the process of developing non-infringing processes for 4-6 new molecules. In addition to existing 15 products, the company has 20 products in pipeline whose combined global sales were approximately USD 25 bn in 2003 and ISLL envisages being among the first three Indian companies to launch them.

ISLL is in fact the only company in the world apart from the innovator (Abbott) to have developed Clarithromycin granules, and was also the first to develop Roxithromycin granules. The R&D of the Company is ready with four new patents. These are patents for non - infringing processes of an Anti-Diabetic, Cardiovascular, Anti-Histamine & Antibiotic drug respectively. All these drugs are scheduled to be launched in the financial year 2004-05.

The company has recently set up a subsidiary in US and has also recruited top officials for the same. The new outfit would essentially seek Custom Research, Custom Manufacturing arrangements and strategic partnership in the US market. The Company has already tied up with four US companies, which figure among the top 15 Companies in the US, for supply of its products.

Ind Swift Laboratories Ltd (ISLL) is an emerging API player, with a clear focus on positioning itself as a primary supplier of bulk drugs to regulated markets. Hitherto focused on unregulated / soft regulated markets, ISLL has been steadily building a platform for a foray into regulated markets – the company has invested heavily in manufacturing and R&D infrastructure, and efforts are also on to develop a front end in the target markets. With six cGMP compliant plants and a robust product basket of 18 molecules (20 more in the pipeline), ISLL is well set to reap the rewards of its initiatives over the next few years.

ISLL has built a full fledged R&D centre with a team of around 70 people, which is clearly focused on developing new drugs and non infringing processes for the same. The company has strong process chemistry skills, which helps it develop cost effective and complex processes for various APIs and intermediates. The R&D efforts have led to successful commercialization of 18 products so far, while around 20 are in the pipeline to be launched over the next two to three years.

The Way You Work Can Cause Headaches

The Way You Work Can Cause Headaches

This release tells you how to prevent tension headaches in the workplace. It also tells you how to get rid of a tension headache through a set of simple stretches, and provides further resources on where to go to learn how to get permanent relief from chronic tension headaches.

(PRWEB) June 10, 2005

Do you suffer from chronic tension headaches? If so, you're not alone.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, about 9 million Americans suffer from chronic tension headaches. The National Headache Foundation says up to 40 million Americans suffer from repeated tension headaches.

Paul Bacho, a certified athletic trainer in Streetsboro, Ohio, said most of these people suffer due to poor posture.

"The problem is that many people have jobs that put them in a lousy positioning all day," said Bacho, who has been an athletic trainer for over 27 years. "They don't realize that they have to take periodic breaks to take pressure off of their neck, shoulder and upper back muscles."

Bacho, who has developed a home-based treatment program for chronic tension headache sufferers, said the root of the problem is tight and spasmed muscles in the neck, shoulders and upper back.

This tightness and spasms associated with this tightness, he said, restrict blood flow to the back of the head and irritate nerve endings there, resulting in chronic tension headaches.

"The best medicine is prevention," he said. "It's important to take breaks to loosen up when you feel a headache coming on so you don't develop the muscle spasms in the first place."

To that end, he said, while you're at work - before a headache comes on - you should:

1. Sit up straight and stand up straight. In other words, assume the military position: shoulders back, head up, chest out, stomach tight.

2. If you sit all day, get a chair with good back support.

3. Bring your work surface closer to you. For example, if your job involves stooping down to your work station, elevate it on a platform so you don't have to bend down so low.

4. Take several breaks during the day to perform a series of stretching and isometric exercises. These can be done sitting or standing:

A. With your hands behind your back, gently pull your shoulders back and maintain this position for one to three minutes.

B. Turn your head halfway to the right (or left). Then drop your head forward until you feel slight tension. Let the weight of your head gently stretch the neck muscles. Go slowly - no pain! Hold this position for up to two minutes, then turn to the opposite side and repeat.

If you've already got a tension headache, Bacho recommends:

1. Performing the previously mentioned stretching exercise.

2. Applying moist heat on your neck and shoulders - a microwavable heat pack or towel soaked in very warm water, for example. If moist heat is impractical or isn't available, use dry heat.

3. Getting someone to give your neck and shoulders a deep tissue massage.

For more information about chronic tension headaches and how to get rid of them, go to Bacho's web site at

A recently launched website, www. vitaminsdietshop. com, proudly announces its many useful health supplements. No more struggling to lose weight, as this site is a dieter's dream. If a shopper's weight loss efforts are not what they expect, then the addition of some of these supplements may be just what their metabolisms need to effectively burn fat. Carb blockers, sugar substitutes, appetite suppressants, fat burners and thermogenics are only some of the products available that accelerate weight loss. National Jobs Initiative Awards Grants to Eight Projects to Help Frontline Workers Upgrade Skills and Advance Career Opportunities

National Jobs Initiative Awards Grants to Eight Projects to Help Frontline Workers Upgrade Skills and Advance Career Opportunities

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has awarded $3.5 million in grants to projects in eight states to help advance the careers of frontline health care workers by providing training to build skills, increase earning potential and improve the quality of care and services that patients receive. The grants are part of Jobs to Careers: Promoting Work-Based Learning for Quality Care, a national initiative that supports a variety of projects to develop the skills of workers who deliver direct health care and services. Workers who may benefit include medical assistants, health educators, laboratory technicians, home health aides, substance abuse counselors and dietary aides.

Princeton, NJ (Vocus) February 29, 2008

Across the United States, 4.7 million frontline health care workers provide patients and clients with preventive and early intervention services, chronic illness management strategies, and long-term and post-hospitalization rehabilitative care. Despite their critical and expanding role in delivering health care, these workers earn less than $40,000 per year on average and have limited opportunities to build skills or advance professionally.

This is the second round of grants under Jobs to Careers, a four-year, $15.8 million national initiative of RWJF, in collaboration with the Hitachi Foundation and the U. S. Department of Labor. The program encourages partnerships among employers, educational institutions and other organizations to improve training and advancement opportunities for their frontline workers. The partnership organizations are working to implement long-term systems changes and test new models of work-based learning -- an approach to adult education that emphasizes the employee as learner, and the work process itself as a source of learning. Boston-based Jobs for the Future (JFF) serves as the Jobs to Careers national program office.

“A stable and skilled health workforce can lead to better quality of care and services,” said Sallie Petrucci George, RWJF program officer. “Currently, advancement and development opportunities for frontline workers are sporadic. That’s why Jobs to Careers supports the development of these types of systems – to ensure that these programs are readily accessible for all frontline workers.”

“Along with the strong partnerships, work-based learning is the cornerstone of this initiative,” said Barbara Dyer, president and CEO of the Hitachi Foundation. “It holds promise to be an invaluable tool to help workers learn how to solve real problems on the job and to help employers figure out the best strategies to train future workers so they can succeed in jobs with better pay and increased responsibilities.”

The eight projects (see list below) represent diverse settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community and behavioral health centers in cities and remote villages. The new grants bring the total number of Jobs to Careers projects to seventeen.

“Well-trained, well-paid workers are key to supplying us the quality of service we need as the demand for health services increases,” said Maria Flynn of JFF and director of the national program office for Jobs to Careers. “These are the people who offer day-to-day personal care and relief to hospital patients, make it possible for many of the elderly to continue living in their homes, staff the laboratories that are essential to quality health care and help our addicted recover—yet on average they don’t earn enough to support their own families.”

Boston Children's Museum Lunch & Learn Lecture Series

Boston Children's Museum Lunch & Learn Lecture Series

Supersize Me: The Social Context of the Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Boston, MA (Vocus) May 19, 2010

Boston Children's Museum (http://www. BostonChildrensMuseum. org) announced today the second Lunch & Learn in a series of lectures which focus on helping parents, educators and child caregivers understand and react to the most prevalent issues facing our children.

This quarter’s Lunch & Learn topic is Supersize Me: The Social Context of the Childhood Obesity Epidemic to be held at Boston Children’s Museum Tuesday, June 15, 2010 from 11:30am-1:30pm. Dr. Elizabeth Goodman, pediatrician, and Dr. Beth DeFrino, psychologist, present their research and answer questions regarding childhood obesity issues.

What is obesity? What created the epidemic?

Is it a social phenomenon, or do biologic factors

Explain why one-third of children in the US and

Two-thirds of American adults are overweight today?

This presentation will address these questions and explore how interactions between the social and biological environments in which we live influence health. Further, the presentation will discuss how engaging young people to create solutions to the obesity epidemic are a powerful, important, and yet often overlooked element in our response to this problem.

“Obesity in this country has more than doubled in children and more than tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. The statistics are staggering and prove we simply can't afford to wait to reverse the trends,” said Michael Yogman, M. D. vice chair of the board of Boston Children’s Museum. “As parents and caregivers, we must be role models for the next generation’s nutritional and activity choices.”

Reversing the childhood obesity trend takes a long - term commitment. It is our responsibility to work together to support parents and caregivers while creating a healthier environment for our children.

Boston Children’s Museum has taken an active role in supporting parents, who must face important behavioral and health issues almost daily. Through the Lunch and Learn Series, the Museum provides information about best practices and provides access to expert professional advice on current controversial topics. Parents, educators and child caregivers will have the opportunity to ask the professionals questions and interact with others facing similar issues.

Tickets are $30 each. To purchase tickets for this Lunch & Learn lecture or for additional information, please contact Brittany Molloy at 617-426-6500 x221or molloy(at)BostonChildrensMuseum(dot)org.

Martha Stewart Plays the Nutcracker in Holiday Food & Décor Themed Show

Martha Stewart Plays the Nutcracker in Holiday Food & Décor Themed Show

Perfect holidays with everyone's favorite nut, the pecan. Good for more than just pies, with pecans provided by NutsOnline. com, Martha Stewart dishes up nutty decorating ideas on the holiday themed television show set to air on Friday, December 1, 2006.

Linden, NJ (PRWEB) November 30, 2006

Martha Stewart gets in the holiday spirit, and shows audience members how to easily crack a hard-shell pecan nut, and use the traditional holiday nuts as a tasteful holiday decoration. With pecans (http://www. nutsonline. com/nuts/pecans/) provided by NutsOnline. com, Martha Stewart also dishes up nutty decorating ideas on the holiday themed television show set to air on Friday, December 1, 2006.

Using a specialty pecan nutcracker, Martha Stewart demonstrates how to crack fresh hard shell pecans (http://www. nutsonline. com/nuts/pecans/hard-shell. html), and uses the smooth paper shell pecan from Georgia (http://www. nutsonline. com/nuts/pecans/paper-shell. html) for holiday decorating. Holiday party guests can enjoy a simple display of the nuts, and crack themselves a sweet snack with these hearty pecans in the shell.

Also appearing in this episode of Martha Stewart, are more holiday good things and appearances by Andrea Bocelli and chef Jim Botsacos sharing Greek appetizer recipes. Viewers should check their local listings for show airtimes.

The Particulars of Pecans

Despite 2006 being a smaller crop year for southern Pecans, experts agree the quality of this year's pecans are higher than normal, and consumers should expect to receive large, meaty and sweet tasting pecans from NutsOnline. com

In addition to being a favorite holiday food, the pecan (http://www. nutsonline. com/nuts/pecans/) is also known as a heart healthy nut. Pecans are naturally high in antioxidants, packed with nutrients and contain the "good" type of unsaturated fat. Several medical research studies have shown that adding pecans to a traditional low-fat, cholesterol-lowering diet can help reduce the presence of bad cholesterol (LDL) and helps maintain desirable levels of good cholesterol (HDL).

Did you know there was more to ways use pecans for cooking than just baking pecan pies? Find heaps of holiday Pecan Recipes (http://www. nutsonline. com/recipes/?q=pecan) from NutsOnline. com, or submit your perfect pecan recipe.

You may not have heard of the mangosteen fruit. However, it has been used for centuries in Cambodia and South East Asia in folk medicine. Also, much mangosteen research has been carried out in laboratories and universities around the world over the last 30 years. Alternative health practitioners have used the mangosteen fruit to treat a wide spectrum of health ailments and conditions with great success, which has produced a wide spectrum of testimonials. The research that they have completed has increased what we know about the real world benefits the mangosteen provides to the human body.

How to save $100 billion from our national healthcare costs, prevent deaths, and reduce hospital and nursing home admissions

How to save $100 billion from our national healthcare costs, prevent deaths, and reduce hospital and nursing home admissions

Without realizing it a newly minted company has formed a way to save $100 billion from our national healthcare costs, prevent deaths, and reduce hospital and nursing home admissions. “We were unaware that our company’s primary goal to help working caregivers could hold such potential in reducing the nation’s economic healthcare costs.”

(PRWEB) August 19, 2004

How to save $100 billion from our national economy every year And Lower healthcare costs. Without realizing it a newly minted company has formed a way to save $100 billion from our national healthcare costs, prevent deaths, and reduce hospital and nursing home admissions. “We were unaware that our company’s primary goal to help working caregivers could hold such potential in reducing the nation’s economic healthcare costs.” stated Joseph Quinn President of Personal Voice Inc.

Personal Voice Inc. can help prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and confinements that are caused by failure to take medications properly.

According to, “The Washington Times” August 6, 2003,

“Pharmaceutical noncompliance is a tremendous problem in the United States that drains an estimated $100 billion from our national economy every year, and is blamed for the deaths of over 125,000 Americans annually (342 people everyday). Ten percent of all hospital admissions are the result of pharmaceutical noncompliance, and twenty-three percent of all nursing home admissions are due to people’s inability to take their medications as prescribed.”

What about your parents or other loved ones are they really always taking their medications?”

“This is the main reason for forming Personal Voice” states co-founder Victoria Quinn, “Nuclear families are swamped by everyday responsibilities”. Personal Voice can speak to your loved one for you, to address your concern by checking or chatting for a few minutes during your busy workday. If they don’t answer we will contact you, EMS, or a neighbor as soon as you desire. We can perform reminders for diet, exercise and other independent living issues. We have other more advanced services available, all custom designed including assistance with medical billing problems, and writing services. “We are family friendly”.

Joseph Quinn a co-founder of Personal Voice remembers, “From personal experience with my own mother. I asked if she took her medicines, she said she took them. When I got there on the weekend, they were partly taken. I could not call three times a day and confirm her taking them at that time”. Incidents like this are common when loved ones have medical issues, and the frailties of aging are sapping their vitality. Personal Voice can help them maintain their independence and self-confidence in a family friendly way. We can perform one-on-one telephone reminders during your normal workweek for the following concerns: LIVING ESSENTIALS - Doctor Appointments, Prescriptions, Refills, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Insulin, Diet, Vitamins, Fiber, or Herb Supplements, PERSONAL CALENDAR – Check-up call Day Care, Hair/nail salon, Phone calls, Schedule Confirmation, Homemaker, Visiting Nurse, Meals on Wheels, Exercise, Dance, Tai Chi, Yoga, CHORES - Shopping, Cleaning, Washing, Laundry, Dry Cleaning, ENTERTAINMENT - Books, Magazines, Newspapers, Puzzles, TV or Radio, Trips, and Family outings.

Just give us a schedule and we can call for you. At this time only loved ones whose primary language is English can be accommodated. ThereÂ’s no better guarantee than your loving concern. New Standards for Medicare and Medicaid Suppliers Proposed

New Standards for Medicare and Medicaid Suppliers Proposed

Supplier of electric wheelchairs and power mobility options embraces new standards.

New Braunfels, TX (PRWEB) November 30, 2005

Today, the SCOOTER Store, a supplier of electric wheelchairs (http://www. thescooterstore. com), scooters and other power mobility options, submitted comments in support of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid's proposed quality standards for suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS). The SCOOTER Store hopes that CMS will consider the proposed standards as a minimum requirement for any supplier to the Medicare community and that they continue to strengthen and extend the standards in advance of publishing final requirements.

“Unfortunately, the integrity of dedicated power mobility suppliers has been under attack for several years because of fraud and abuse perpetrated by a few crooks posing as honest DME suppliers," said The SCOOTER Store President Mike Pfister. "A new level of standards should give the government confidence that the power mobility benefit will be reliably provided to needy and qualified beneficiaries.”

The SCOOTER Store’s comments suggest strong support for the new requirements including: participant accreditation, internal compliance programs, internal quality programs, improved customer service capabilities, improved consumer awareness and training, internal auditing and monitoring, more strict employment hiring practices, industry certifications, frequent performance reporting to CMS, beneficiary satisfaction surveys, historical equipment tracking, and enhanced home assessments. Healthy Motivation to Drive Business Forward Pushes People to Take Acceptable Risks

Healthy Motivation to Drive Business Forward Pushes People to Take Acceptable Risks

FPC Workplace Web Poll Data indicates that despite the current economic conditions there is a healthy attitude toward risk-taking. 44% of survey responders agree it is important to continue to take an appropriate amount of risk recognizing that it is critical to driving business forward. 19% of those surveyed leaned more towards remaining cautious, while hoping to take more risk as the economy improves.

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 15, 2010

FPC, a national executive search firm, polls job candidates visiting http://www. fpcnational. com on their perspective on workplace issues and trends.

A total of 5,429 responders surveyed between September 2010 and November 2010, across all industries and job levels, answered the following question:

“How would you categorize your level of risk-taking in your current position?”

44% I continue to take risks, recognizing that this will help drive business.

19% I'm maintaining current business, and hope to take more risks as the economy improves.

3% I generally try not to take many risks; I don't want to make waves.

34% I am currently unemployed.

Nearly 2/3 of the currently employed individuals admitted that they believe taking risks is an important component to growing business and innovating.

When asked to define risk in the workplace, Ron Herzog, CEO & President of FPC, said, “First and foremost, when we consider the definition of risk, we obviously think about it within the confines of what is legal and acceptable. As it relates to our survey question, we think about possible examples of risk as either challenging the status quo, standing up for what you believe is the right decision or not settling for the old adage ‘Well that’s just the way we’ve always done it.”

Furthermore, Herzog added, “Despite the still volatile economic landscape, a significant amount of employees believe that it is imperative to make quick decisions and accept responsibility for the outcomes. We have recently spoken to a lot of companies that have invested back into their companies by hiring and purchasing equipment in anticipation of brighter times ahead.”

What You Need to Know About the Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer

What You Need to Know About the Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer

In this excerpt from a recent issue of The Johns Hopkins Prostate Bulletin, Dr. Jacek Mostwin discusses what you need to know about five of the important risk factors for prostate cancer.

Ferndale, WA (PRWEB) April 30, 2008

As with all cancers, there are many theories as to what might cause prostate cancer. Based on the research thus far, we can be fairly certain that age, race, and family history are important risk factors for prostate cancer. Diet and lifestyle factors may also influence whether a man develops the disease.

Thus far, no clear association has been found between the development of prostate cancer and smoking; vasectomy; the presence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); or regular alcohol intake (although binge drinking may increase the risk).

Increasing evidence suggests that fat intake, physical inactivity, or being overweight may influence the development or progression of prostate cancer.

In this article, we will review what you need to know about the 5 main risk factors associated with prostate cancer.

AGE

As a man ages, his risk of developing prostate cancer increases dramatically. This age-related increase is greater for prostate cancer than for any other type of cancer. The average age at the time of diagnosis is between 65 and 70, and the average age of death is between 77 and 80.

RACE

The incidence of prostate cancer in the United States varies by race. The rate for white men is 101 per 100,000 each year. Black men are at higher risk (137 per 100,000), and Asian Americans are at the lowest risk (20 to 47 per 100,000).

FAMILY HISTORY

Studies of identical and fraternal twins show that prostate cancer has a stronger hereditary component than many other cancers, including breast and colon cancer.

Having one first-degree relative (a brother or father) with prostate cancer doubles the risk of developing the disease; having a second-degree relative (an uncle or grandfather) with prostate cancer confers only a small increase in risk.

A number of genetic mutations are linked to prostate cancer. The best studied of these mutations are in a region of chromosome 1 known as HPC1. HPC1 may be involved in protecting against prostate inflammation.

Some analyses have suggested that mutations in HPC1 increase the risk of prostate cancer, but other studies have failed to find an association. Other genes involved in how the body handles male hormones (androgens), its reaction to inflammation or infection, and its ability to process certain types of fat may also be important.

Although genes can influence a man's risk of developing prostate cancer, other factors are also at work. The likelihood that identical twins (who share all genetic information) will both develop prostate cancer is 19% to 27%. This suggests that lifestyle choices can modify the effects of the genetic cards that a person is dealt at birth.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Much effort has been devoted to searching for environmental factors that might serve as promoters for prostate cancer. The incidence of microscopic prostate cancer (cancers too small to be seen except under a microscope) is similar among men in the United States and in all other countries that have been examined.

However, the mortality rates from prostate cancer differ widely from one country to another and even within different regions of the United States. These differences suggest that environmental factors (such as diet, lifestyle, or exposure to certain substances or forces) can influence prostate cancer's progression from microscopic tumors to clinically significant ones.

DIETARY FAT

Most studies examining the relationship between dietary fat and prostate cancer have found that a higher fat intake (especially animal fat) is associated with an increased incidence of prostate cancer.

Fat makes up 30% to 40% of the calories in the American diet, compared with 15% in Japan. This difference in fat consumption may help explain the much lower death rate from prostate cancer in Japan, as well as the great variability in prostate cancer mortality rates around the world.

It is also possible that people who consume large amounts of high-fat foods are less likely to eat healthful foods that may protect against cancer.

While one can't control age, race and family history, men who fall into the high-risk categories might want to consider making PSA testing a regular part of their usual health check-ups. And for those who fall into the high-risk bracket, they may wish to consider limiting their dietary fat and looking at their overall lifestyle to help prevent prostate cancer.

ProRehab Tells The Truth About Stretching Before Exercise And Injuries

ProRehab Tells The Truth About Stretching Before Exercise And Injuries

Multiple research studies show that stretching before physical activity alone does not help prevent injury. ProRehab physical therapists are the best choice for patient education and outcomes because they use the latest scientific evidence, rather than myths couched as conventional wisdom.

Evansville, IN (Vocus/PRWEB) December 14, 2010

Almost any physical therapist, athletic trainer, or sports medicine physician would answer “yes” if asked if people should stretch before exercise. However, this individual would be hard pressed to show research that supports this claim. In fact, multiple research studies show that stretching before physical activity alone does not help prevent injury. ProRehab physical therapists are the best choice for patient education and outcomes because they use the latest scientific evidence, rather than myths couched as conventional wisdom.

The New York Times discusses the myth of stretching to prevent injuries in a 2008 article. A study conducted at the University of Nevada found that athletes generated less force in their leg muscles after static stretching. “This is a neuromuscular inhibitory response to static stretching,” says Malachy McHugh, the director of research at the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. The stretched muscle will stay weak for up to 30 minutes, making the occurrence of injury more likely while the muscle is weak.

“Things such as fitness and strength have been proven as more important in the prevention of injuries than stretching,” explains Kelli Goedde, PT, DPT, OCS, physical therapist at ProRehab in Evansville, Indiana. “In other words, it’s not that stretching shouldn’t be a part of a work out, but is best in conjunction with other factors.”

A November 2010 study in the British Journal of Sport Medicine surveyed 2377 adults, who regularly participate in physical activity, for 12 weeks to research the effects of static stretching before exercise on injury. It was found that stretching alone does little more than reduce bothersome soreness. Furthermore, in a 2008 study by the Centers for Disease Control, it was found that knee injuries among female college soccer players were cut in half when they followed warm-up routine that included both dynamic exercises and static stretching.

Duane Knudson, a professor of kinesiology at California State University, recommends warming up the body and loosening muscles by starting with aerobic activity, usually light jogging. Ever seen marathoners stride before starting a race? They are trying to warm up their body. This part of the warm-up should only take 10-15 minutes and include a 5 minute recovery. Next, dynamic stretching (stretching while moving) that is specific to the sport should be incorporated. For example, runners should do squats and lunges. This will increase power, flexibility, and range of motion.

“In order to treat patients effectively, all physical therapists must be familiar with current research,” says Brian Kelly, DPT, SCS, ATC, COMT, ProRehab physical therapist. “The latest scientific evidence about stretching before work-outs is a great example that advancements are constantly made in research and health care. ProRehab physical therapists are responsible for making sure that patients receive the best treatment possible, based on the newest research. At ProRehab we incorporate the latest and best research into patient care with continuing education, professional development, and training activities.”

Patients have a choice regaurding which physical therapist they see when a physician refers them to physical therapy. ProRehab invites patients to choose them for their physical therapy needs. To learn more about ProRehab visit ProRehab-pc. com.

Oil and Vinegar Drizzler Cruets: New Product Available at Cruets. com

Oil and Vinegar Drizzler Cruets: New Product Available at Cruets. com

Custom-designed for retail sale, the new oil and vinegar Drizzler Cruets sold at Cruets. com help consumers avoid the dripping often associated with the popular condiments. The product is sold in a matching set and is available exclusively on the web site. It is fast becoming a popular gift item.

Lakeside, AZ (PRWEB) April 30, 2007

Cruets. com is pleased to announce the availability of the new oil and vinegar Drizzler Cruets.

According to Cruets. com representative Brad Brand, the new products are custom made for the company, designed to eliminate the traditional messiness associated with oil and vinegar bottles. The Drizzler Cruets are available exclusively through the web site.

"Oil and vinegar is a healthy addition to the diet, but there is one unsavory aspect about using oil and vinegar; it can be reduced to the indiscriminate drip," Brand said. "Oil and vinegar bottles drip. They drip down the side. They drip on the table, ruining fine linens. Drips occur on the counter, drips find their way to your apron, eventually oil drips on the floor. Quality vinegar will drip as well, adding sticky to the oily."

With this dilemma in mind, Brand directed the design of the new Drizzler Cruets. Fine olive oil and gourmet vinegar, he surmised, can be dispensed in glass drizzle cruets made for the perfect drizzle flow, absolutely free from drips down the bottle or on the table.

No one enjoys touching oily and sticky bottles or decanters, and there is no need to constantly wipe the bottles clean to enjoy the condiments, thanks to the unique design of the Drizzler Cruets, he said.

Quality is just as important as design at Cruets. com, Brand added. Instead of mass producing the product, "the Drizzler Cruets are hand blown by European glass craftsmen just for our company," he said.

The Drizzler Cruets are sold in a matching set, each holding 6 fluid ounces. According to custom specifications, they are made of lightweight, durable and hygienic, hand-blown borosilicate glass. Each cruet consists of two pieces: a glass pour spout and the vessel body. They are dishwasher safe and backed by a 100% guarantee.

"The Drizzler Cruets have become one of our best selling gift products," Brand said. "Last year we sold out of them at Christmas. They are already becoming a popular gift selection for Mother's Day, and other gift occasions."

Cruets. com has been an online gourmet gift site since 1999. The company began as a wholesale supplier to hotels and restaurants. Their exclusive products are only available for retail purchase online.
