What is Reefnet Fishing?

Reefnet fishing is one of the most eco-friendly fishing practices in the world, in which other species are released unharmed. The fishing gear consists of two small, stationary, unpowered rafts with a net suspended underwater between them. The crews wait for the flood tide, and as the migrating salmon rise up to clear the reef, spotters in the rigs' towers call out for the net to be raised. Fossil fuel use is minimal because the rafts do not move in the water once they've been positioned. Some rafts even use solar panels to power their electric winches.



The fishermen catch only a few salmon at a time, which are immediately placed into a small net cage suspended in the sea. The webcam has been put up to assure bidders that the chip is being kept safe and secure during the remaining hours of the auction.



Why all the bother for a single Doritos chip? "We’re having some fun with this, for sure," said family spokesperson, Rich Chadwick. "The Pope’s health is improving and Easter week is here – why not share this with the world?" Chadwick, 37, owner of an audio/video production company in the Boston area, MultiMediaPros found the chip while watching TV with his family last Saturday evening.



In what appears to be a frenzy of chip auction fever, a copy-cat chip has appeared on eBay from Canada. The second chip seems to have been broken to match the shape of the ChadwickÂ’s chip and has yet to receive any bids. As of Tuesday morning the bid for the "original" chip was up to over $850. The auction ends tonight at 9:15 pm eastern time.

As part of Marriott Golf's recent mandate program whereby 34 managed golf properties throughout North America and the Caribbean will become Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries by the end of 2008, Seaview Resort & Spa is doing its part to help preserve the environment by protecting a species of special concern in the State of New Jersey.



Each year, Seaview Resort & Spa's famed Bay Course is inhabited by nesting Diamondback Terrapins, a species of turtles native to the brackish coastal swamps of eastern and southern United States. Although Seaview has always proactively advised golfers to be especially mindful of the turtles while playing, this year the golf course resort in Southern New Jersey has taken even greater measures. To help protect these special turtles, Seaview has created several excluder traps, which are placed over nesting sites within bunkers throughout the course. These environmentally friendly excluder traps keep other animals, such as crows and foxes, from digging up turtle eggs and also prevent golfers from accidentally walking on nests while on the Bay Course.



In addition to building excluder traps for the Diamondbacks, Seaview has recently partnered with The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, an organization dedicated to promoting the conservation and preservation of coastal ecosystems. As part of the partnership, this environmentally friendly hotel made a $500 donation to the Institute and has "adopted a turtle." The money will be used to buy a transmitter for the adopted baby turtle, which will allow the Institute to monitor the turtle over the next couple of years and use the information for their ongoing research.

California has most transgender friendly laws in U. S. AB 1400 and AB 1586 add to strong set of existing anti-discrimination laws.

On January 1, 2006 two new laws solidified California’s leadership role as the most protective state for transgender rights in the nation. The laws, sponsored by Equality California (EQCA), were AB 1400 (the Civil Rights Act of 2005) and AB 1586 (the Insurance Gender Non-Discrimination Act). AB 1400, authored by Santa Cruz Assemblyman John Laird, amended California’s public accommodation law to make clear that transgender people are protected. AB 1586, authored by Assemblyman Paul Koretz, prohibits discrimination against transgender people by the insurance industry, including healthcare insurers.



“By protecting transgender people and our families in education, employment, housing, foster care, insurance, and public accommodation, the legislature is saying very clearly that California supports diversity and inclusion,” said Danny Kirchoff, EQCA’s Transgender Equality California Project Manager. “Across the state, employers, schools, businesses, and government agencies are taking common-sense steps to create non-discriminatory environments.”



After decades in which transgender people had little protection against even the most flagrant acts of discrimination, these laws establish that California embraces transgender people equally and provides effective remedies for discrimination. A 2003 report released by the Transgender Law Center (TLC) and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Trans Realities, documented the high rates of discrimination experienced by transgender people. Survey respondents reported discrimination in employment (49%), public accommodation (38%), housing (32%), and health care (31%).



“Even today, transgender people face discrimination in virtually every institution in the state, but these laws provide incredibly powerful tools for creating lasting social change,” said Christopher Daley, Director of TLC. “While it will take some time for the effects of these laws to be fully felt in individuals’ lives, California’s elected officials are to be commended for once again leading the nation on fairness and equality.”

MedSave. com notices a growoing national trend for college students to change health plans over the Thanksgiving holiday and offers some possible explanations.

MedSave. com is gearing up for a lesser-known Thanksgiving tradition. Thousands of college students change their health insurance plans during their trip home to see parents this week. From the Wednesday before Thanksgiving through the following weekend, online and telephone requests from students and their parents have come in at a record pace. This trend has grown each year since the enrollment firmÂ’s launch in 1997. Despite efforts to take more calls and process more applications, the firm still expects a backlog of business on Thanksgiving weekend. Other enrollment firms report similar trends. MedSave. com focuses on low cost health insurance, so it serves a higher percentage of students than some other enrollment firms. In addition, students are more likely than adults to enroll for a health plan online rather than traditional paper methods.



The exact reasons for this national trend are not known but Tony Novak, OnlineAdviser for MedSave. com, speculates on three possibilities:



First, some college students who enrolled in the collegeÂ’s on-campus health plan in September now realize that they want to be treated by other medical providers outside the college or need health insurance while traveling and visiting parents and friends back home.



Second, parents who covered their college students on an employer-provided family health plan found that there may be too many loopholes in the coverage to be worthwhile. The nation’s largest health plans pay a lower level of benefits for “out-of-network charges” that affects college students living far away from home.



Finally, it might simply be that this is the first serious conversation about family financial issues that families have had since their child left home in September.



Since student health plans and short-term health insurance plans at MedSave. com cover all charges equally – regardless of the location or medical provider – these are an attractive option by comparison. Since students as a group are a healthy bunch, the cost of this coverage is minimal.



Novak estimates that the national average health insurance cost for a college student costs is about $900. The disadvantage of student health insurance plans, he points out, is that ordinary small expenses like over-the-counter drugs and minimal doctors expenses are not covered. Most students elect insurance with a $500 or $1000 deductible to keep the premium cost down. Even with out-of-pocket costs added to health insurance premiums, the cost of providing health care to students is only a fraction of the cost of covering other adults.

The letter to Congressional leaders, signed by senior transportation officials from California, New York, Michigan, and Oregon; prominent industry groups including AAA, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), and American Highway Users Alliance; and companies from the automotive, technology, engineering, and related industries, calls for "a strong economic package that makes a continuing commitment to 'intelligent' infrastructure investment," which "will not only put us closer to fixing our economy, but will enhance the quality of life for our citizens, the productivity of our workers, and the health of our environment."
