Medgar Evers College Celebrates Thirty-Fifth Commencement Congressman Edolphus Towns to Deliver the Keynote Address



On Saturday, June 4, 2005, Medgar Evers College/CUNY will hold its Thirty-Fifth Annual Commencement Exercises at the Bedford Building at 1650 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 am in the Bedford Building Amphitheater, following an Alumni Breakfast and a Presidential Reception for special invited guests. Congressman Edolphus Towns will be the keynote speaker. Dennis Walcott, the Deputy Mayor for Policy, will be awarded a Presidential Medal.

The Honorable Edolphus "Ed" Towns is currently serving his twelfth term in the U. S House of Representatives. He represents the Tenth Congressional District of Brooklyn, New York, encompassing the neighborhoods of East New York, Canarsie, Brownsville, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Cypress Hills, Clinton Hill, Mill Basin, Midwood, downtown Brooklyn, Boreum Hill, as well as parts of Fort Greene and Williamsburg.



A former Medgar Evers College professor, Representative Towns is a member of the exclusive Energy and Commerce Committee where he is on the Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, the Health Subcommittee, and the Telecommunications and the Internet Subcommittee. Through his committee appointments, Rep. Towns has worked to enhance consumers' privacy protections on the Internet, develop innovative initiatives to reduce asthma, and bridge the digital divide. He also serves on the Government Reform Committee's Subcommittee on Government Efficiency and Financial Management where he is the Ranking Member.



The Honorable Dennis M. Walcott is New York CityÂ’s Deputy Mayor for Policy. Mr. Walcott is Mayor Bloomberg's point person on education, and in that capacity is coordinating the mayor's reform of New York City's public schools. He also serves as the liaison to the Department of Youth and Community Development, New York City Housing Authority, Health and Hospitals Corporation, City University of New York, and the MayorÂ’s Office of Health Insurance Access.
