I-AirPurifiers. com Explains the Benefits of Ionic Air Purifiers

I-AirPurifiers. com Explains the Benefits of Ionic Air Purifiers

Mount Kisco, NY (PRWEB) September 23, 2005

According to i-AirPurifiers. com, ionic air purifiers are not filter systems. Ionic air purifiers work by sending out negatively charged ions into the air of your home. The ions latch onto chemicals and particles such as dust, tobacco smoke, and pollen, causing them to become attracted to each other and to the interior surfaces of your home.

Some ionic air purifiers have fans and others don’t. Those with fans can be noisy or very quiet, depending on the brand. Those without fans rely on existing air currents – caused by ceiling fans, human movement, and so on – to carry the ions to the various nooks and crannies of the room.

One variation on the ionic air purifier is the electrostatic air purifier. It works by actually drawing air in through a carbon or HEPA pre-filter, which catches larger particles such as dust and pet dander. Then, the smaller particles, such as aerosols, pass through an electrical field, which ionically charges the pollutants. Immediately the newly charged particles are caught upon magnetized plates.

As i-AirPurifiers. com explains, most ionic air purifiers produce some ozone as a byproduct of ionization. Ozone has a distinct, “fresh” smell that can help to reduce and mask certain odors. But ozone can be bad for your health when exposed in large amounts or for a long period of time. Be sure to buy a unit that emits 50 parts per billion or fewer.

Simmons Kids Crib Mattresses Achieve Greenguard Certifications

Simmons Kids Crib Mattresses Achieve Greenguard Certifications

All Simmons Kids crib mattresses and contour changing pads meet stringent chemical emissions standards set by respected environmental quality monitor

(Vocus) October 14, 2010

Simmons Kids, the children’s mattress division of Simmons Bedding Company, announced today that its complete portfolio of crib mattresses and contour changing pads have received the prestigious GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality and GREENGUARD Children & Schools℠ Certifications from the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting human health and quality of life through improved indoor air quality. GEI is among the most widely respected organizations related to indoor air quality, and products pursuing its certifications must undergo extensive testing for thousands of potentially harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals. Simmons Kids’ achievement of GREENGUARD Certification verifies that all Simmons Kids® crib mattresses and contour changing pads meet GEI’s strict chemical emission standards and helps to reassure parents of the superior safety and high quality of Simmons Kids products.

“Many parents are concerned about their children interacting with products that emit or release chemicals, and crib mattresses are of special concern because of how much time infants spend in their cribs,” said Nancy Villars, director of sales for Simmons Kids. “Parents place a lot of trust in third-party organizations that independently test and confirm the safety of a product, so when consumers see the GREENGUARD Certified mark on our packaging, they’ll feel confident purchasing a Simmons Kids crib mattress because they know it will help contribute to a healthier indoor environment for their baby.”

To qualify for GREENGUARD Certification, products must undergo extensive testing of all components to measure off-gassing of chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene and toluene. The product’s total emission levels are also tested in the product’s fully assembled form. Furthermore, GEI requires products to undergo annual recertification testing and quarterly quality monitoring to ensure ongoing compliance with GEI emissions standards.

The issue of poor indoor air quality has gained a higher profile in recent years as consumers have become aware that many everyday household products can release chemicals into the air that may be inhaled by a room’s occupants. Indoor air pollution can be especially problematic for children since they breathe in more air proportionally to their body size than adults, which could result in a higher level of exposure. While the complete effects of such chemical exposure are unknown, poor indoor air quality can aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms as well as cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, nausea and dizziness. Long-term exposure can cause cancer or damage to the heart, liver, kidneys and nervous system.

“Indoor air pollution can significantly impact a family’s health and the quality of life that they experience in their home,” said Henning Bloech, executive director of GEI. “GREENGUARD Certification helps put parents’ minds at ease by confirming that the products they purchase will not negatively impact the air in their indoor environment. We’re thrilled that Simmons Kids achieved GREENGUARD Certification. In doing so, they’ve demonstrated an industry-leading commitment to healthier living and improving the lives of their customers.”

Aware of the growing concern around the presence of chemicals in products, Simmons has examined its entire product line looking for ways to enhance the safety and eco-friendliness of its products. In addition to obtaining GREENGUARD Certification for Simmons Kids crib mattresses and contour changing pads, all of the polyurethane foams in Simmons® and Simmons Kids mattresses have earned the CertiPUR-US® certification seal, verifying that the foams are low-VOC and free from ozone-depleting CFCs. CertiPUR-US certification also confirms that foam products are made without PBDE fire retardants, lead, mercury, formaldehyde, prohibited phthalates and other potentially harmful materials.

To achieve the CertiPUR-US certification seal, petitioning foams undergo rigorous durability testing and are sent to an independent, third-party laboratory for indoor air quality emissions testing as well as a content analysis. Simmons played an instrumental role in facilitating the CertiPUR-US certification process for each of its foam suppliers, encouraging them to obtain the certification as a way to reassure consumers about the safety of polyurethane foams. Medical Expert Exposes The Real Reason Millions Of Americans Rely On Daily Prescription Medication

Medical Expert Exposes The Real Reason Millions Of Americans Rely On Daily Prescription Medication

Millions of people on prescription medication may have fallen victim to the conventional beliefs of healthcare. Now, in her latest book, Dr. Mary Zesiewicz reveals why a more collaborative model of healthcare may be the only way to improve your quality of life.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 23, 2006 –

In her recently published book, “Hippocrates MD: The Transformation of Healthcare”, (ISBN 0977476197) Mary F. Zesiewicz, M. D. brings to light exactly how our current healthcare system has changed from a patient-needs focused to an insurance-driven practice.

“Twenty years ago, we thoroughly met and evaluated every child whose families sought our care,” says Dr. Mary Zesiewicz, a Board Certified Clinical Psychiatrist, certified in child and adolescent psychiatry. “By the mid 1990’s, we would often meet up to three families an hour. Because a quick answer was needed for insurance payment, medication was often the only solution.”

While changing our current healthcare system around may seem like a daunting task, the need is ever growing. Dr. Mary states, “Our conventional health care system must begin working towards a more complementary structure now.”

Our conventional health care setting emphasizes medicines and surgeries. Rather than treating the whole person, our conventional system is driven by systems that lead to diagnosis and treatments – either prescriptions or surgeries. Complementary health, on the other hand, is based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Complementary health modalities are not curing diseases; instead they are helping the body to get healthy and stay healthy.

Although we in the U. S. spend the most in the world per capita in health care, with costs rising exponentially, the World Health Organization ranks the United States as 37th in the overall health of its people and in our ability to keep people healthy.

The only way to bring the U. S. back up as a world leader in healthcare and healthy lifestyles is to change our current health care systems. More focus needs to be placed on preventative medicine, holistic options, and wellness services.

“To date, there is little by way of true preventative care in our current conventional paradigm of health care”, says Dr. Mary. “True preventative care goes way beyond early detection of disease. It is a way of life, balancing mind, body and spirit. Good health habits need to start young, the younger the better.”

About Dr Mary Zesiewicz M. D.

Dr Mary Zesiewicz has been in practice for over twenty years. She firmly believes that true healthcare reform will only take place when all facets of healthcare providers adopt a patient-centered, holistic approach to health. Dr. Mary is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in the fields of Adult Psychiatry as well as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is also certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She is passionate about having a part in the transformation of today’s healthcare.

Appreciating the Real Value of Our Pets: How We Can Care For Our Aging Animal Companions

Appreciating the Real Value of Our Pets: How We Can Care For Our Aging Animal Companions

Here in the United States, over 290 million of us own nearly 378 million pets, and we spent over 32 billion dollars on them in 2003—an almost doubling of pet expenditures in the last 10 years. And that’s $12 billion more than we spent on toys for our children that same year. The message is clear, we seem to care more for our pets than ever before and show it by spending more and more for their care.

(PRWEB) August 17, 2005

Not since Lassie and My Friend Flicka graced television airwaves has America been more in love with its pets. There are now more pets than people in the country according to a survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association.

ItÂ’s no wonder; psychologists and pro-animal groups have been telling us for years that pets are for good for much more than fetching Frisbees in the yard. Simply spending time with them can help humans reduce depression and anxiety and even revive the will to live in some.

Just think of the classic dog response when its master returns home from a 10 minute trip to the store. That “I love you and can’t get enough of you” tail-wagging and enthusiasm is hard to find in the human world. There is even AAT, or Animal Assisted Therapy, in which animals are used by health professionals to treat a variety of both physical and mental disorders.

There is also strong evidence that pet owners have less high blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. Their resistance to disease is heightened and tension is decreased.

But with all the good that owning pets bring us, they also carry with them pain of loss that we might not otherwise experience. Pets die. And while that is nothing new, the growing attachment that we seem to have to our pets means a growing number of people suffer great emotional distress at the loss of pets.

A woman named Lori, for instance recently wrote on a website for pet-owners about her dog disappearing, “I have not been able to cope very well with his disappearance. I feel like part of my soul went with him wherever he went.”

And then there is the challenge of euthanasia. Unlike in the human world where it is mostly illegal and highly debated, putting pets “to sleep” is an accepted practice. But it still brings great pain to those involved. After euthanizing her dog, a grief-stricken owner recently wrote, “I know we did what was best for him by ending his suffering, yet I feel so guilty for having helped in the decision to end a life…..my heart is broken.”

But it is just this kind of deep attachment, and yes, pain, that makes having a pet such a rewarding experience, says Diane Pomerance, a Ph. D. in communications who is also a grief recovery specialist.

“In today’s complex, impersonal, industrialized and technologically-oriented society,” she says, “we learn not only from our elderly humans but also from our older animal companions, with whom we happily share both our lives and homes.”

Pomerance argues that pets teach us about life and ourselves, and that results in better understanding of ourselves and more sensitivity to caring for our pets.

Dr. Pomerance is the author of several books on animal issues. Most recently, she authored, Animal Elders: Caring About Our Aging Animal Companions in which she guides the reader to a greater appreciation for learning from and caring for pets. “It is important to value and appreciate all phases of life,” she says, “and to honor, respect, and care for our animal and human elders.”

But it is a two-way street, she believes. From the attachment to and care for our pets comes wisdom for our own lives. “From our animal companions,” she says, “we can learn much about the process of growing old with its accompanying rewards and limitations.”

For a review copy of the book or to set up an interview with Diane Pomerance for a story, please contact Jay Wilke at 727-443-7115, ext. 223.

Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ Available Soon From Thousands of Drug Stores and Doctors Throughout the United States

Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ Available Soon From Thousands of Drug Stores and Doctors Throughout the United States

After years of limiting the distribution of his famous Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ and associated diet cookies and other foods primarily to his patients and a handful of his fellow physicians, Dr. Sanford Siegal announces their imminent nationwide availability.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) January 10, 2007

Renowned author and weight-loss expert Dr. Sanford Siegal, best known as the creator of the popular Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ (http://www. CookieDietOnline. com), today announced that his proprietary diet, and its associated diet cookies, shakes, soup and other foods, will be available at thousands of U. S. drug stores and from doctors, chiropractors and other health care providers from coast-to-coast beginning on March 15th. Most of the estimated 500,000 overweight people who've used Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ products since he created the weight-loss and weight-maintenance program in 1975 have been patients of his South Florida medical practice, Siegal Medical Group (http://www. drsiegal. com). This is the first time that Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ will be offered in all fifty states, or for over-the-counter retail purchase.

Dr. Siegal's decision to make his Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ widely available was driven by two factors. One is that the number of calls he receives each week from overweight sufferers around the country and beyond has been increasing steadily. Unfortunately, most people who contact him live too far away to be treated in his South Florida-based practice.

"I receive several calls a week from overweight people who want the real Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ but are too far away to visit my medical practice in Miami-Dade County," said Dr. Siegal. "It's frustrating because, as a doctor, you're trained to help people. So, after thirty years, I've decided to make Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ available throughout the country from drug stores and health care professionals."

Another reason that he decided to make Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ obtainable everywhere is the growing number of cookie diet imitators. Some of these companies have gone so far as to refer to the profiles of Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ in various national TV, newspaper and magazine stories as if they were profiles of their own products.

"Let's face it--Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ is going to be my legacy," added Dr. Siegal. "While I'm proud of whatever contributions my books have made to the debates on high fiber diets (http://search. barnesandnoble. com/booksearch/isbnInquiry. asp? z=y&EAN=9780440177906&itm=1), hypothyroidism (http://search. barnesandnoble. com/booksearch/isbnInquiry. asp? z=y&EAN=9780446677103&itm=1), hunger suppression and calorie-restricted diets (http://www. abebooks. com/servlet/BookDetailsPL? bi=310753328&searchurl=isbn%3D0026106604%26nsa%3D1), it's Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ that will continue to provide the greatest benefit to overweight people. I'm making it available everywhere in order to protect its thirty-year reputation and to ensure that people who think they're getting Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™ are getting the real thing and not some knock-off."

Dr. Siegal created his first food--an oatmeal raisin cookie--in 1975 as a way to help his patients control their hunger so that they could lose weight on a low-calorie diet. Soon to follow were other cookie flavors, shakes and soup with the same hunger-controlling properties. The products, which contain no drugs and will be available without a prescription, include Dr. Siegal's proprietary blend of food proteins which provide unusual hunger-suppression for the number of calories they deliver.

Dr. Siegal is the author of several books. His latest book, Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet™: How One Doctor and His Cookie Helped 500,000 People Lose Weight, will arrive at bookstores in March. Other books by Sanford Siegal, D. O., M. D., include:

Dr. Siegal's Natural Fiber Permanent Weight-Loss Diet (Dial Press, 1975)

Dr. Siegal's Natural Fiber Cookbook (Dial Press, 1976)

Dieta del doctor Siegal: basada en fibras naturales para una perdida depeso per manente (Editorial Diana, Mexico, 1980)

Hunger Control Without Drugs: The Doctor's Appestatic Diet (Macmillan, 1985)

Free Marriage Counseling "Help Guide" Now Available from FMC Directory

Free Marriage Counseling "Help Guide" Now Available from FMC Directory

The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory is now offering a free "help guide" delivered via email to anyone who wants it, and visitors can request it simply by going to family-marriage-counseling. com.

New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) June 24, 2009

The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory is now offering a free "help guide" delivered via email to anyone who wants it, and visitors can request it simply by going to family-marriage-counseling. com.

The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory (FMC Directory for short) was started in the Fall of 2003 by Chris Hartwell, MSW, with the purpose of making it easier for people to find therapists in the US through major search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. At the time, very few websites for therapists were showing up for popular searches like "marriage counseling (http://family-marriage-counseling. com)," "family counseling," "couples counseling," and more. This is where The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory filled its niche and accomplished the task it set out to - "within months we were at the top of Google's search results for 'marriage counseling' and we've stayed there ever since," says Chris. "We've become one of the most popular sites on the web for people to locate a therapist nearby, and we've been doing it for over 5 years straight now."

The "Help Guide" available through family-marriage-counseling. com is a natural complement to the other helpful resources for people looking for marriage advice. "First and foremost," states Chris, "our goal is to get those looking for help connected to licensed therapists. I realize that not everyone's ready for therapy when they initially find us though, and that's the main reason we offer the different self-help products and articles that are available through our website."

The Help Guide was created with two main purposes:

1. To give visitors a list of the most respected resources available for couples in crisis. This is sent in an email and as a PDF attachment once the visitor confirms their email address. It contains a list of directories provided by professional licensing bodies, self-help programs, as well as social media sites for support.

2. To give visitors some of the best marriage advice submitted to our website from professional counselors and therapists over the years in an easy to follow format. After the visitor requests the Help Guide, they will receive a new article each week that was written to help couples in crisis. The series alternates between articles written by professional therapists, and "Self Help Spotlights" that cover some of the unique self help programs available for marriages.

Visitors who sign up for the "Help Guide" get it free of charge and can unsubscribe at any time. Since the guide was started a few months ago, there are already over 250 visitors who have requested it and benefit from remaining on the list.

The information is very helpful and can serve a number of different purposes:

The Help Guide can be reprinted and distributed by healthcare agencies and professionals as long as proper attribution is kept intact so that people know where it came from, and so that any links in digital copies are accurate and take visitors to the appropriate website.  The information can be used by individuals to find practitioners and resources they are seeking, and individuals can gain helpful insight from the articles written by professional therapists.  Professional therapists can submit articles to The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory in order to add to the available information and possibly have their work published through the list along with proper credit given to the author. Chris goes on to say, "We've had over a half million unique visitors in the past year come to our website looking for help, and this Help Guide we've created is just another way to reach out to them. Best of all, we know that it if they haven't seen a therapist yet for marriage counseling, or done some type of self-help program, that when they decide to, they'll know where to turn. Counseling is a powerful tool for helping us create change in our lives."

With the current state of our nation's economy, the cost of marriage counseling is prohibitive for many couples, so free marriage counseling tools and advice can come in handy now more than ever before. While these resources should not be a substitute for professional help when it is needed, they can be a helpful adjunct. The FMC Directory takes extra care to ensure that these types of tools and information get put in front of those who need them. For more information, visit http://family-marriage-counseling. com (http://family-marriage-counseling. com).

New Diabetes Research Website Encourages Life Beyond Insulin Shots

New Diabetes Research Website Encourages Life Beyond Insulin Shots

Recently launched educational website, DiabetesIsLife. com has a wealth of information for diabetics and their families. The site's founder sat down to talk about why he started the site and how important diabetes education really is.

Santa Clara, CA (PRWEB) May 21, 2009

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 23.6 million people in the United States who have been diagnosed with diabetes. Another alarming factoid from this study is that diabetes has increased 13.5 percent from 2005 to 2007. With so many Americans facing a life-altering affliction, more information regarding diabetes diet and diabetes symptoms should be available, which is where www. DiabetesIsLife. com comes in.

Diabetes is Life is a new web venture operated by Steve Toy, an individual who has been living with Type I diabetes for over 12 years.

"I started the website in April 2009," he began, "with the intention of building a place where people can help those who are diabetic, as well as those who live with them."

With facts involving diabetes symptoms, suggested diets and other notable information, DiabetesIsLife. com is poised to be one of the most comprehensive websites regarding diabetes, much of which is culled from Toy's own life and research.

"The site is partly based on my experiences. If you yourself, or someone you know suffers from diabetes, it's good to know how to handle situations where your health might be compromised," Toy said.

In addition to his personal information, Toy has also included exercise equipment and books to help other diabetics. There is also the blog that Toy has started simultaneously with his informational website.

"I wanted to get information out to people in a plain-speaking manner," Toy said of www. DiabeticResearchBlog. com. "With so many medical websites, it seems like it's more of a medical journal and this is simple and understandable. It will help people feel comforted."

Still in its infancy, Toy is constantly working on the site, including information about holistic cures and adding more articles to help people out. Despite millions of people being diagnosed with diabetes, it's somewhat reassuring to know that there's an individual like Steve Toy who's out there helping people for no other reason than an altruistic one.

Prince William County Virginia Real Estate: Goodbye Gloom and Doom...Hello Sunshine

Prince William County Virginia Real Estate: Goodbye Gloom and Doom...Hello Sunshine

Keith M. Elliott Jr. a Realtor® with RE/MAX Olympic Realty in Haymarket, Virginia expresses his professional opinion on the current real estate market, as well as discusses the latest home sale statistics for Prince William County. Some of these real estate statistics just might surprise you.

Manassas, VA (PRWEB) February 21, 2009

Keith M. Elliott Jr. a Realtor® with RE/MAX Olympic Realty in Haymarket, Virginia expresses his professional opinion on the current real estate market, as well as discusses the latest home sale statistics for Prince William County. Some of these real estate statistics just might surprise you.

"With a continuous stream of negative news battering us from so many different directions on a day to day basis...it's nice to know that the real estate market in Prince William County, Virginia is alive and well," said Keith Elliott Jr. a Realtor® with RE/MAX Olympic Realty in Haymarket. "While it's true we still have a ways to go...our local market appears to be much healthier than other parts of the country," he added.

Let's look at recent statistics.

In November 2008, there were 3,919 homes on the market for sale in the county, 726 sold during that month, and 896 under contract. The total number of new listings taken for the month came in at 1,010 units. The Average Sale Price was $221,504 per unit - A stunning 36.82% drop in value compared to November of 2007 when the Average Sale Price was $350,589. The Average Days on Market in November per unit was 107 days compared with a 132 days in November 2007. Another interesting note, is that the total number of units Sold in November 2008 was 726 a dramatic 116.72% increase from November of the previous year. The monthly absorption rate based on these figures comes in at 5.39 months - Meaning, it would take 5.39 months to sell all of the current inventory at the same sales rate for this month if the market continued just as it is and the number of new listings remained constant.

Next, we examine the figures for December 2008.

In December of 2008, there were 3,596 homes on the market for sale in the county, 845 sold during that month, and 969 were under contract. A welcomed increase! We wanted to see the number of active listings drop compared to last month, as well as see a significant rise in the number of properties sold and units going under contract. This happened. A very positve sign indeed! The total number of new listings taken for the month came in at 925 units, again much lower than last month. The Average Sale Price dropped to $212,403 per unit - A devastating 39.25% drop in value compared to December of 2007 when the Average Sale Price was a whopping $349,634. The Average Days on Market in December was 108 days barely a blink more than last month and still considerably lower than 140 days experienced in December of 2007. Also, worth noting is that the total number of units Sold in December of 2008 was 845 a whopping 138.70% increase from December of 2007. Now, we look at the monthly absorption rate based on these figures and that comes in at 4.25 months - So, as you can see compared to last month...it would now only take 4.25 months to sell all of the current inventory at the same sales rate for this month if the market continued just as it is.

Lastly, we need to review the figures for January 2009.

In January 2009, there were 3,346 homes on the market, 647 sold during that month, and 987 under contract. The total number of new listings taken for the month also came in at 987 units. The Average Sale Price was $210,255 per unit - A significant 34.06% drop in value compared to January 2008 when the Average Sale Price was $318,859. The Average Days on Market in January dropped slightly from last month to 103 days compared with a 135 days in January 2008. The total number of units Sold in January 2009 was 647 a 107.37% increase from January 2008. The monthly absorption rate based on these figures comes in at 5.17 months...up slightly from 4.25 months in December 2008.

The emphasis here illustrates that while average home sale prices continue to drift somewhat lower in our county, the last three months indicate that these price differences are no longer as staggering as they were during the first nine months of 2008. Average Sale Price values have remained within a range of $10,000 or, so since September of 2008 hinting towards stabilization.

"While it would be terrific not only to see the existing housing inventory continue to decline...it would be far greater to see the Average Sale Price increase as well. Then we would have sales increasing as well as property values increasing too. But, unfortunately...we may be waiting a while to see that happen but, I do believe it will happen" Elliott said.

"I think the key here, is to understand that these numbers are not as bad as they could be...in actuality they are much better than what I originally anticipated," Elliott said. "I fully expected to see housing sales slow to a crawl over the winter months since this is typically one of the slowest periods of the year...however, these numbers show enormous strength. Just knowing that we went from having 17.16 months of inventory on the market in January 2008 to where we now have only 5.17 months is spectacular."

Elliott who represents both buyers and sellers added, "Homes are selling - there's no question about it. So, financing is available for those that qualify. And just to put the sales pace into proper perspective...some of these active listings are receiving as many as four or, five offers per week. A far cry from before when we might see one offer in four or, five weeks."

Elliott continued, "Many of the homes which are sold require significant repair to bring them up to 'move in ready' condition, so not only will local contractors and home improvement stores benefit from the additional business...but, also utility service providers like the gas, water, & electric companies will have new activations, retail stores might sell more home essential products, Home Owner Associations will no longer have to worry about vacant and neglected properties, and much needed tax revenue will be generated for the continued support of our area infrastructure (Police, Fire & Rescue, Schools, and County Government). I think it is very encouraging to see these homes sell...because that means more money is flowing back into our local economy and that is exactly what we need right now".

EpiVax, Inc. forms Collaborative Research Agreement with Roche to Develop Tregitope Technology

EpiVax, Inc. forms Collaborative Research Agreement with Roche to Develop Tregitope Technology

EpiVax, Inc. today announced a collaborative research agreement with Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) aimed at evaluating EpiVax’s proprietary Tregitope technology, which could potentially reduce detrimental immune responses to certain drugs. In the course of the Roche-EpiVax collaboration, the EpiVax Tregitope technology will be evaluated for its effect on the immunogenicity of protein therapeutics.

Providence, RI (Vocus) December 2, 2009

Together, EpiVax and Roche will carry out in silico, in vitro and in vivo experiments aimed at establishing proof of concept. Under the agreement, Roche has a nonexclusive option to use Tregitope technology in its pipeline of protein therapeutic drugs with a right to a license the technology for specific products under pre-negotiated terms.

"Roche brings a wealth of experience, clinical expertise and resources to this collaboration. Working together, it is our intent to integrate the Tregitope technology into drugs that will improve human health on a global scale,” said Dr. Anne De Groot, CEO and CSO of EpiVax

Because Tregitope uses the body’s own natural responses to induce tolerance, treatments incorporating Tregitope have the potential to be far safer than administration of protein therapeutics with systemic immunosuppressants, a clinical approach to addressing immunogenicity that is relatively common. EpiVax believes the Tregitope technology could also be used for treatment of a broad range of auto-immune disorders as well as applications in the treatment of allergy, transplant, deimmunization, animal health and chronic infectious disease.

About Tregitopes

Tregitope is a set of regulatory T-cell epitopes found in the Fc region of IgG that induce the activity of the body’s own natural regulatory T cells. When administered in conjunction with other antigens or protein immunogens, the response to these immunogens is diminished and altered if the antigen/immunogens are co-administered with Tregitopes. Preliminary in vitro and in vivo studies indicate that the modification of the immune response is due to the induction of natural T reg cells.

Examples of potentially immunogenic protein therapeutics include erythropoietin and alpha interferon, as well as antibodies that have immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties such as humira and rituximab. Like vaccines, protein therapeutics can engender both cellular and humoral immune responses. Anti-drug antibodies (ADA) may neutralize the therapeutic effects of the drug and/or alter its pharmacokinetics. Since the impact of immunogenicity can be quite severe, regulatory agencies are developing new guidelines for monitoring immunogenicity and drug developers are seeking to reduce immune responses through other means such as by inducing tolerance. The Tregitope technology induces the human body’s natural tolerance mechanisms, reducing the immunogenicity of co-administered proteins. The initial discovery was published in 2008, in the journal Blood, by EpiVax CEO and CIO De Groot and Martin.

About EpiVax

EpiVax, Inc. is dedicated to merging in silico, in vitro and in vivo immunology research to generate new therapeutics as well as new vaccines for infectious diseases. T cell epitope mapping, the selection of target peptides from any protein sequence, is a powerful resource for the development of novel protein therapeutics. EpiVax research shows that peptides identified by EpiMatrix™ software are highly likely to provoke an immune response when presented to T cells; some of these epitopes were found to be regulatory T cell epitopes. Others induce inflammatory immune response, the root cause of immunogenicity problems in protein therapeutics. EpiVax tools can also be used to accurately deimmunize proteins. Bearded Dragon Owners Charged with Torturing Their Pets to Death by Notable Expert

Author and Pogona Expert Identifies Nearly 40 Deadly Mistakes Most Bearded Dragon Owners Make in His Latest E-Book, “Bearded Dragon Secret Manual: The Manual Pet Shop Owners & Breeders Don’t Want You to Know About”

New York, N. Y. (PRWEB) July 9, 2010

The bearded dragon (http://www. beardeddragonsecretmanual. com), known more formally as the pogona, is one of the pet shop industry’s best-selling lizards, primarily because shop owners fuel the myth that it’s one of the easiest species to care for. Contrary to popular belief, bearded dragons require specific environments to thrive in, and special attention and care. In his new e-book, “Bearded Dragon Secret Manual,” Chris Johnson shares information and tips critical to helping bearded dragon lovers stop making deadly mistakes, and learn to properly care for their pets.

“The pet shop industry has done consumers a great disservice by marketing bearded dragons as a ‘easy to care for,’ much like a guppie or a terrapin,” said Chris Johnson, author and expert pogona breeder. “This has led to the neglect and death of millions of bearded dragons, simply because pet shop owners know very little about them, and because they want your return business.”

“Bearded Dragon Secret Manual: The Manual Pet Shop Owners & Breeders Don’t Want You to Know About” is based on Chris Johnson’s decade of experience breeding and caring for pogonas. The book answers common questions, reveals rare facts and insider tips, and offers strategies that are guaranteed to help bearded dragon owners not only save the lives of their bearded dragons, but also save money.

Upon purchasing the e-book, consumers who are considering purchasing a bearded dragon, or those who already own one will learn:

The most deadly mistake new owners make once bringing their bearded dragon into the home.  46 deadly plants you should never put in the enclosure of your bearded dragon.  How to properly bathe your bearded dragon.  How to save money on bearded dragons, necessary equipment and food.  How to read a bearded dragon’s eye movements like a pro.  Six questions to ask to determine if you’re ready to own a bearded dragon.  How to design your own cage for your bearded dragon.  Nine signs of a healthy, growing bearded dragon.  And many other tips related to bearded dragon care (http://www. beardeddragonsecretmanual. com).

“According to a recent poll, nearly half of pet owners worry that they won’t be able to afford veterinary care if needed, and many of them admit that they would not pay an expensive bill,” said Johnson. “These types of statistics illustrate the importance of learning as much as you can about your bearded dragon and how to keep it healthy so you won’t have to worry about veterinary bills, or getting to the point where your pet is so sick that you cannot care for it. My new book is a wake-up call, a roadmap and a must-have, comprehensive guide for bearded dragon owners who truly care about their pets and want them to thrive.”

“Bearded Dragon Secret Manual” is currently available for $19 at www. beardeddragonsecretmanual. com. 5-HTP Found To Be Versatile Supplement For Many - JaneÂ’s Health Market Encourages Education To Help Area Women

If you could supplement an amino acid in your body to help you sleep, would you? Thousands of women are discovering that the answer is a resounding, “yes” through the discovery of 5-HTP.

(PRWEB) March 13, 2005

5-HTp, a precursor to L-tryptophan and serotonin, is a supplement growing in popularity for many reasons. It is being used for depression (bipolar/unipolar), insomnia and obesity. The benefits that are being experienced by consumers is the reduction of migraine severity, reduction of ParkinsonÂ’s symptoms, an increase in pain threshold, creating a more relaxed waking state within 45 minutes, appetite reduction, aggression reduction, mood balancer and a reduction in the time it takes to fall asleep without the disturbing sleep patterns other supplements may create.

Most recently, many menopausal women are utilizing the supplement to help them sleep. Many of these women are reporting a loss of weight due to appetite reduction and an increase in their endorphin release during exercise.

Ruth Leininger, owner of Jane’s Health Market and Deli located at 11029 Elm Street in Omaha explains, “there is still a lot to learn about this supplement, but I am encouraged by my customer’s comments and the fact that this is a naturally occurring amino acid in all of us.” Ruth also recommends that you find supplements with Vitamins B3, B6 and C to maximize the benefits.

As always, consumers should always discuss these changes with their physician before embarking on a supplement change. 5-HTP should not be taken with MAO inhibitors.

Animal Expert Offers Pet Flood Safety Suggestions

Animal Expert Offers Pet Flood Safety Suggestions

(PRWEB) January 12, 2005

When disaster hits the mountains of southern California it is serious business. Only three highways lead in and out of the Big Bear Valley and this week's storms have created havoc.

In October of 2003 wildfires closed two of those roads down. In January of 2005 all three highways closed and numerous other threats endangered residents and visitors to the southern California mountain resort.

According to mountain resident and author Diana L. Guerrero, "The main problem is that people were not prepared for such severe weather systems. This time of year we have a heavy load of visitors and their lack of understanding towards drastic changes in weather conditions and navigating in them complicates matters."

Lack of preparation and understanding translated into two hundred cars stranded on an area of road called the "Arctic Circle." A tour bus, failing to heed chain restrictions, blocked the highway and put motorists at further risk to mud and rock slides. Heavy snow and ice required snow cat rescues and the evacuation of motorists who were then housed in emergency quarters in the valley. The highway remains blocked until those vehicles can be removed.

Fawnskin mountain residents were isolated when flood waters covered the highway. Downed trees and slides blocked alternate routes out. Roads turned to rushing rivers.

In Big Bear Lake and other areas the snow berms, walls of ice created by workers clearing snow from the main roads, formed channels for water, flooded roads and cut deep into the asphalt.

The torrential currents flooded areas and blocked drains--contributing to the flooding of businesses. Heavy snow, followed by rain, collapsed roofs and inflicted water damage to public buildings.

Abandoned cars also posed problems. Guerrero said, "Unfortunately people do not realize the risk that deep snow or moving water poses. Cars attempting to cross the deep torrents often stall and create more problems by blocking the roads and creating the need for motorist rescue. People attempting to drive on roads covered in knee deep snow stranded themselves, blocking an alternate route, and created a heavier load for emergency service personnel."

But the mountain residents were not the only people impacted by the recent storm conditions. The recent flooding across California impacted humans but it also created devastating problems for animals.

Guerrero said, "Pet owners and animal professionals can take steps to insure pet safety and avoid serious problems before the threat of disaster, specifically flooding, impacts their homes or businesses."

Guerrero is the author of the booklet, "Animal Disaster Preparedness for Pet Owners & Pet Professionals" and is one of the contributing editors to "Resources for Crisis Management in Zoos and Other Animal Care Facilities." In addition to her written works, she holds numerous certifications in the animal disaster field from groups such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

"In any disaster, people should keep close tabs on their animals. They shouldn't be left outdoors in these type of conditions and pets need to be monitored. If a situation is unsafe for humans it is unsafe for animals."

Guerrero continued. "Alternate flood plans should include escape areas for animals so they have access to higher elevations. Animals are not usually allowed in human emergency shelters due to health precautions and limited space. So plug into an animal network through your local shelters and community rescue groups. If you are not sure what these are ask community leaders and the animal agencies in your area for direction."

In her experience, flood animal rescuers find critters hoarse from crying for help. She stressed that people in flood prone areas need to take precautions--and those plans should include include animal evacuation and safety.

"When people evacuate they need to take their animals because they usually won't have a second chance to go back to get them. Contingency plans for when they are away from home are essential, too."

Guerrero's animal disaster booklet, now in the seventh edition, offers tips to prepare prior to a disaster, how to form or get involved in a animal disaster preparedness network, and what items to include in kits for dogs, cats, horses, and birds. Guerrero also includes tip sheets for behavior, identification, health, diet, and sanitation for multiple species during a disaster.

The booklet ends with a section on post disaster animal behavior and list valuable resources for the pet owner including animal disaster agencies, where to get training, and suppliers of kits and equipment.

Guerrero's pet flood safety suggestions are:

-Take your animals with you! Pets that are released or left behind often become victims of flood waters, contaminated food or water, or exposure to the elements.

-Make sure animals have waterproof ID tags on them.

-Three weeks of supplies is not excessive for humans or pets.

-Proof of current vaccinations will be required for housing animals in many rescue facilities. Make sure you have copies stored in a waterproof container with other supplies so you don't forget to take them.

-Maintain current photos of your property and animals.

-Place pet rescue decals on a window or door to alert rescue personnel to the presence of critters.

-Make sure you have a plan that is effective during the times when you are separated from your pets.

-Do not tether or restrain animals when floods waters threaten your area.

-Check for evacuation plans at your stable or form a network with other facilities.

-Storm surges and flood threats mean that you need to provide a way for critters to escape and climb to safety. This does not mean turning them loose! Make sure livestock have access to higher ground.

-Use wire crates to transport and house smaller animals since they provide better ventilation and fold up easily for storage and transport.

-Don't create a hazard by trying to forge through flooded streets with moving water.

-Return home only after authorities advise that it is safe to return.

-Use caution when returning home and walking on higher ground since insects, snakes, and other animals may have found refuge there.

-Stressed animals often avoid food and exhibit other behavior abnormalities. Allow them to adjust and refrain from reinforcing abnormal behavior.

-Post flood threats include mosquitos and other vectors. Check with local veterinarians for preventative medical tips.

SPA CONSULTANT, TERESA FOXWORTHY, leads new trend in spa services with Well-Being Programs

SPA CONSULTANT, TERESA FOXWORTHY, leads new trend in spa services with Well-Being Programs

NEW MILLENNIUM CONSULTING GROUP founder, Teresa Foxworthy, leader in personal transformation services, helps spa directors plan programs to keep them at forefront of spa industry.

(PRWEB) October 8, 2003

San Diego, CA - October 5, 2003 – NEW MILLENNIUM CONSULTING GROUP of Marin County, CA has announced they will be expanding their consulting services to show health spa directors how to keep up with the latest trend in spa services. A new program especially for luxury spas is being launched in San Diego this fall. Spa Concepts, the spa consulting services program provided by NMCG, will include program development, staff training, and feng shui consultations. Small boutique spas, as well as larger, resort spas, are both welcome to inquire into their services.

"The latest trend in spa treatments is personal transformation," says Teresa Foxworthy, Founder and Director of NMCG. “Just look at the success of the Chopra Center in CarlsbadÂ’s La Costa Resort. People love getting attention for their hearts and souls. They donÂ’t need a therapist as much as they just need to connect with someone who is trained to be present for their process. Spas are the perfect environment to relax, feel safe, and then release whatever is blocking their joy and personal radiance. Spas have an exciting opportunity now to make these personal growth services available for their clientele. As guests find they can rely on a spa for their peace of mind, as well as their personal comfort, they will have even more reason to return again and again. ItÂ’s an unforgettable experience.”

Spas around the world, like the St. Regis’ Spa Gaucin in Dana Point, CA, just north of San Diego, and La Costa’s Chopra Center, are beginning to launch these “wellness” programs. Mind-Body Wellness is something that is gaining in popularity. The travel industry notes the increase in people traveling to Destination Spas. Though 9-11 slowed things down for a while, people discover that a trip to a North American spa with these “wellness” programs is a pleasant alternative to trekking in unfamiliar countries.

“The NEW MILLENNIUM CONSULTING GROUP has been developing personal growth programs, which are the basis for ‘wellness’ programs, for over 20 years,” explains Ms. Foxworthy. She elaborates, “We have over 40 programs that parlay into Life Coaching, Weekend Retreats, Lectures, Classes, etc. These include programs that help men and women reclaim their confidence, peace of mind, and zest for living, like Vision Quest, which helps people develop a life purpose based on a ‘personal mythology’ that they create. Our Emerging Goddess and Noble Warrior programs are also very popular, as it’s becoming increasingly meaningful to reclaim the sacred in our lives and relationships. It’s a new paradigm that is discovered with delight in the spa environment.”

Spa directors and owners will also be pleased to work with a long-time practicing Feng Shui Consultant. Feng Shui, pronounced FUNG SCHWAY, is the ancient art of placement, imported from China. Though many cultures practice some form of ‘sacred arrangements’, the Chinese version has garnered the most popularity here in America. “My feng shui experience allows me to assist spas with everything from site location, architectural and landscape considerations, as well, of course as the minutia of spa life for guests. The results are not just more business, but more satisfied guests. Feng Shui is an auspicious approach to arranging the physical environment for optimum results. It’s another way of reclaiming our human-ness,” notes founder of Feng Shui Elegance and New Millennium Consulting Group.

The combination of Wellness Programs and Feng Shui Consultations offers spa directors and designers a wealth of options to make their spa a leader in the spa industry. “A spa’s biggest task is to provide the highest quality of services that will achieve the ultimate goal: facilitate a relaxing stay for spa guests which will have them coming back again and again. NMCG’s experience in the areas of Wellness and Feng Shui can help spas do just that. The next big trend in spas is offering Personal Transformation services. Mark my words! It’s up to the spas to respond to the public’s interest in receiving these benefits at their establishment. They can do this by offering Private Wellness Consultations, Treatments, Life Coaching, Classes, Retreats, etc.”

2008 Miss America Winner Kirsten Haglund, who frequently appears on Sean Hannity’s Great American Panel (Fox News Channel), announces the release of her debut EP, American Pride. The EP will be available everywhere on October 26th through Nautilus Records, and features songs that deliver a message of modern patriotism.

Inspired by her grandfather, who served in WWII and her father, a former member of the United States Air Force and the Army Reserve, Kirsten Haglund seeks to inspire her own generation with a renewed enthusiasm for the U. S. The songs of American Pride seek to transform the negative connotation associated with nationalism and revitalize patriotism. Kirsten says, “I want to convey the message that pride in our country is not blind faith in America…It is humble confidence in the values that the United states was founded upon.” She hopes her music will remind her generation of the rugged individualism that gives American citizens the will and strength to make a positive impact on the world.

Calling upon the talents of KD Cosmic songwriting duo Kathleen Lantos and David Cochrane, Kirsten Haglund enriches the songs with her angelic vocals. This valuable partnership gives Kirsten the opportunity to encourage her generation to continue to believe in the U. S. as a place of hope, freedom and the home of dreamers seeking a better life.

Since winning Miss America, Kristen Haglund has traveled around the World working with the Armed Forces and the USO. She has also served as Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network and was a spokesperson for Zerosmoke ©. Most recently, Kristen has become an advocate for increased awareness of eating disorders as a public health priority, speaking at Harvard University, the National Press Club and for the United States Congress. She is also a frequent contributor to Sean Hannity’s Great American Panel (Fox News Channel). Kirsten is currently finishing her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in Atlanta, Georgia and is signed to Nautilus Records.

Rx-to-OTC switching boom continues as consumers, insurance providers, and U. S. government vigorously support switching as a means for decreasing overall cost of healthcare

Rx-to-OTC switching boom continues as consumers, insurance providers, and U. S. government vigorously support switching as a means for decreasing overall cost of healthcare.

(PRWEB) August 26, 2004

Research and Markets announces the addition of "Rx to OTC Switch 2003: Leading Candidate Screening and Strategic Analysis" to its offerings.

The sales revenue for over-the-counter (OTC) products amounted to over $30 billion in 2002, with approximately one third attributed to products that have switched from prescription (Rx)to OTC status. Front Line predicts an Rx-to-OTC switching boom over the next five years as consumers, insurance providers, and the U. S. government vigorously support switching as a means for decreasing the overall cost of healthcare.

Rx-to-OTC switching is a deliberate, strategic move that pharmaceutical manufacturers employ when anticipating patent expiration of their products or competition from an approaching new drug class. Additionally, as with Schering-PloughÂ’s Claritin (loratadine), some companies are forced to switch by the U. S. government, further demonstrating the need for sound and preemptive switching strategies.

This report includes an in-depth analysis of current Rx-to-OTC trends, case studies of historical switches, the identification of leading candidates most likely to switch by 2008, and strategic switching strategy options. Also included is a detailed description of FLOSSTM(Front Line Over-the-Counter Switching Screen), Front LineÂ’s proprietary screening model, that was used to assess the leading revenue generating drugs and their likelihood of successfully switching to OTC status.

For a thorough analysis of this important market, this report:

-examines various rationales behind Rx-to-OTC switching

-thoroughly discusses past Rx-to-OTC switches

-analyzes current trends and how they will effect the future of Rx-to-OTC switching

-identifies leading Rx-to-OTC switching candidates by 2008 using a proprietary screening model

-includes in-depth description of screening model development and use

-evaluates risks and challenges facing the industry and proposes potential switching strategies

The Only Hand: A Cookbook that Comes Straight from the Heart: Take One Cup of Inspiration, Two Tablespoons of Resilience and a Healthy Serving of Courage and Hardy Resolve; Blend Them all Together and You've Got a Recipe for the Remarkable Life Story of Margie Glassford

The Only Hand: A cookbook that comes straight from the heart. Take one cup of inspiration, two tablespoons of resilience and a healthy serving of courage and hardy resolve. Blend them all together and you've got a recipe for the remarkable life story of Margie Glassford.

Margie Glassford -- Margaret MacNaughton Glassford, to be a bit more formal -- has seen pretty much everything that life has to offer.

Her father was killed in a D-Day battle when Margie was just nine years old. One of her three adopted children -- Jeffrey -- was killed in an accident just before the Christmas of 1971. And in 1994, totally without warning, she suffered a cerebral aneurysm that paralyzed her entire left side.

So, what did Margie Glassford do? With the use of just her right hand, she re-discovered the joys of cooking and entertaining, focusing her culinary energies on the kinds of healthy meals that were so vital to her recovery. She cooked up a storm, she hosted her friends for evenings of good food and conversation -- and she found a new energy, a new joy, in her life.

And now, Margie Glassford has taken it one step further: She has prepared a cookbook -- The Only Hand: A Cookbook -- and while her intent is to help those who may have only partial use of their hands, it's an enormously valuable resource for anyone who enjoys spending time in the kitchen.

The recipes cover a lot of ground -- from hors d'oeuvres, to soups, to side dishes, to main courses -- and, of course, on to dessert. There is much here that is unique and wonderfully delicious: chilled radish buttermilk soup, carrot soup with toasted almonds, scallops with asparagus, parsnips with gorgonzola cheese. The bonus? Every single recipe can be made with ease.

The Only Hand is, of course, a cookbook -- and a very good one. More than that, it is also an inspiration, the product of a woman who has faced some very difficult challenges over the course of her life, but has stepped up to meet every single one with a form of courage that can only inspire the rest of us.

Author Glassford says she gets her strength from her upbringing and her "Maritime grit.'' She also gets it straight from her own heart -- which is exactly where The Only Hand comes from as well. Read this book, test the recipes and feel the warmth and spirit of Margie Glassford's heart.

New ValiMed™ Medication Validation System Demonstrates USP 797 Compliance at ASHP Summer Meeting

New ValiMed™ Medication Validation System Demonstrates USP 797 Compliance at ASHP Summer Meeting

Baxa Corporation demonstrates the next-generation ValiMed System for medication safety at booth no. 729 at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Summer Meeting June 25 – 28 in Orlando, Fla. The next-generation ValiMed Technology offers the same benefits as the original system, with additional reporting features and a smaller sample requirement.

Englewood, CO (PRWEB) June 26, 2006

Baxa Corporation announces the release of the next-generation ValiMed Medication Validation System at the summer meeting of the American Society for Health-System Pharmacists. The ValiMed System validates medications and concentrations; allowing users to detect counterfeit products for brand protection, provide quality assurance for compounded products, and detect narcotic loss. The ValiMed System ensures patient safety in real time, by verifying that medications are correctly compounded.

ValiMed features patent-pending technology that validates in seconds the strength of compounded doses of high risk medications prior to dispensing. Verification of compounding accuracy and sterilization is a requirement under USP 27-NF 22 Chapter 797, which regulates the compounding of sterile products. The ValiMed System can play a key role in demonstrating the safety of compounded sterile products (CSPs) under these requirements.

The updated version of the ValiMed System – shown for the first time at the ASHP meeting – incorporates reports used to comply with USP 797 requirements. It also features a modified disposable, requiring a reduced sample volume for testing. “This next-generation ValiMed System addresses customer requests.” notes Product Manager Mark Thrasher. “It’s more robust and the smaller sample requirement more easily accommodates current pharmacy work flows.”

During the meeting, Baxa representatives will demonstrate the ValiMed System’s capabilities in their booth, number 729. Pharmacists will see first-hand how the system ensures the accuracy of their compounded solutions and helps them meet both USP 797 verification and JCAHO requirements for patient safety.

“Let’s Move” Toward Filling, Healthy Childhood Snack Solutions

“Let’s Move” Toward Filling, Healthy Childhood Snack Solutions

Childhood obesity is the focus of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. One facet of that initiative is choosing healthier food options. When it comes to filling, nutritious snacks, there are ways for parents to deliver and get kids on board too.

Cambridge, MA (Vocus) February 17, 2010

A recent study shows parents value nutrition when choosing snacks for their kids, but place even greater importance upon satisfying hunger. By choosing healthy, protein-packed snacks like sunflower seeds or nuts, parents can meet both demands.

“Because nutritious treats like sunflower seeds and raw or roasted nuts are rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, they satisfy hunger longer and provide true energy boosts,” said Hicham Chraibi, food scientist for Superior Nut Company.

Snacks are an increasingly prevalent part of childhood, but highly processed and heavily marketed snack foods can be a concern for parents aiming to keep it healthy. The trend has even caught the eye of First Lady Michelle Obama, who recently launched the “Let’s Move” child health initiative. Leading the way in the $68.1 billion packaged snack foods industry are junk foods like the 100-calorie cookie pack, culinary trendologist Kara Nielsen recently told the New York Times.

While snacks do play an important role in boosting energy and maintaining normal blood sugar levels, if they start interfering with meal time appetites, it may be too much of a good thing. Well-timed, healthy snacks combined with three solid meals a day can work wonders for a child’s overall well-being.

“Balanced nutrition is probably the biggest influence on energy and health,” Atlanta-based registered dietitian Ilana Katz told Progressive Grocer magazine recently. “For a child to reach their highest potential in physical activity and health, the body as a whole must work optimally. A balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and fluids all play a crucial role.”

Move kids toward healthy snacks in three easy steps

1. Find a recipe to make your own peanut butter or other dip. Raw fruits and vegetables will be much more appealing and filling when paired with a tasty, nutritious dip. Children will likely become even more enthusiastic after helping make the dip.

2. Let kids decorate their own snack containers with markers or glitter glue. Letting kids add their own unique stamp will create much more excitement about the containers and the contents inside.

3. Let kids experiment with eating sugar-laden junk food and healthier options like seeds, nuts, or trail mix. Have them record how they feel an hour after eating the snack. For instance, do they feel energized or lethargic? Does their stomach hurt? Empowering children to make healthy food choices can end the battle once and for all.

About Superior Nut Company

Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Superior Nut Company has remained family owned and operated for more than 70 years. The company mission includes a strong social and environmental commitment in its quest to produce the finest nut products in the world.
