Talyst's Success in Dallas County Leads to Corrections Win

Dallas County and Parkland Jail Health look to Talyst as a key partner in improving efficiency and patient safety

Bellevue, Wash. (PRWEB) June 25, 2009

Talyst announced today its newest corrections partnership with Parkland Jail Health, servicing Dallas County, Texas. Talyst will implement its corrections-specific InSite™ Remote Dispensing System to service Dallas County's four jails and four juvenile detention centers. InSite for Corrections enables on-demand medication dispensing with patient-specific packaging, ensuring that the right patient gets the right medication every time.

"We currently have Talyst systems installed at Dallas County's Parkland Hospital and have been very pleased with the ease of use, accuracy and reliability of the system," said Sharon Phillips, senior vice president of Community Medicine for Parkland Health & Hospital System. "Our familiarity with Talyst coupled with its unique capabilities in the corrections market makes InSite for Corrections a natural fit for our correctional facilities. We're striving to be a center of excellence in corrections, and Talyst will enable us to improve the accuracy, quality and safety of patient care."

With the system, Talyst places a freestanding, secure dispensing unit on-site at the correctional facility. Medication orders can be clinically reviewed and approved by an off-site pharmacist, and then immediately dispensed at the correctional facility. The automated system means no more waiting for the next medication delivery for STAT orders and, because it's based on actual usage, it requires less medication inventory on-hand. Facilities using the InSite system have also demonstrated that it takes nursing staff a fraction of the time previously required to dispense medications. In fact, one corrections facility reported that a medication run that previously took four nurses four hours each to complete, now takes 45 minutes using InSite for Corrections.

"The corrections environment faces a whole host of challenges, many of which lead to millions of dollars' worth of inmate medications and nursing staff hours being wasted every year," said Carla Corkern, CEO of Talyst. "Parkland Jail Health is proactively putting the technology in place to address these fiscal challenges, and improve inmate care."

Parkland Jail Health currently provides medications to 2,600 inmates twice a day. The annual budget includes approximately $4 million solely for medications. The implementation of Talyst InSite for Corrections will be complete in July, and the facilities plan to have electronic medical record and barcode-scanning systems in place by the end of the year.

The Parkland Jail Health implementation follows Talyst's highly successful partnership with San Bernardino County Corrections in California -- evidence that a growing number of corrections systems are recognizing the benefits of remote dispensing. Later this year, Talyst will implement InSite for Corrections in the Allegheny Correctional Health System in Pittsburgh, PA, and Westchester Medical Center in New York State.
