Experts in AlzheimerÂ’s and Dementia Provide Broward Families Assessments for Eldercare.

(PRWEB) August 19, 2005

According to Olga Brunner, founder of A Good Daughter, Inc., (www. agooddaughter. com), based in Margate, FL, has assembled a team of eldercare experts that allow for a unique understanding what adult children are facing in coping with their elderly parents declining health and well-being, particularly those suffering from AlzheimerÂ’s disease.

Carol Caughran, the firmÂ’s counselor/therapist is a specialist in Lewy-Body form of dementia, currently serves on the board of the National Association. Mary Lynne Beringer is receiving her CDP (Certification as a Dementia Professional) this month. Ms. Brunner is receiving the federal and state license as Nursing Home Administrator this month. In September, Brunner begins guardianship training and will be working with the local elder law attorneys. All three healthcare professional have completed the required AlzheimerÂ’s Association training approved by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.

The organization goes into a home and completes a needs assessment; next they put in the services needed so that seniors can live at home independently versus entering a long term care facility. But in the event that a family feels this type of placement is warranted, A Good Daughter staff conducts facility visits and help families select an appropriate placement for a parent or spouse.”

Additional services include going to doctorÂ’s appointments and monitoring medications and supervising in-home help.  Brunner suggested, “We are surrogate daughters doing what sons and daughters would do for their parents if they were living in-town, or had the time and free away from other professional and family obligations.”

A Good Daughter based in Margate, Florida, was founded based on BrunnerÂ’s own experience. Brunner originally moved from California to Florida to care for her aging mother with Alzheimer's disease. Having been affected by the daunting task of being a caregiver while employed, she became determined to start a business which would help other caregivers navigate the troubled waters of elder care. Brunner became a care manager who brings a personal awareness of the needs of close or long distance caregivers and their loved ones.

Missouri Prison Selected as “Facility of the Year” by National Health Care Organization

Missouri Prison Selected as “Facility of the Year” by National Health Care Organization

National award recognizes demonstrated excellence in health services in Missouri correctional facility.

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) July 27, 2010

The National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) – a leading, standard-setting body dedicated to care in the nation’s prisons and jails – has selected Tipton Correctional Center as 2010’s “NCCHC Facility of the Year.” Tipton Correctional Center, a Missouri Department of Corrections (DOC) facility, was selected from approximately 500 jails, prisons and juvenile confinement facilities that participate in the NCCHC’s nationwide accreditation program.

According to NCCHC President Edward A. Harrison, the Tipton prison was recognized for “demonstrated excellence in health service delivery, correctional healthcare professionalism and a commitment to continuity of service.” Correctional Medical Services (CMS) of St. Louis is the contract correctional healthcare services provider at Tipton and 20 other Missouri Department of Corrections facilities.

“This achievement affirms that through the quality of service we provide to our offender population, we can fulfill our vision to be the standard of excellence in corrections,” said George Lombardi, director of the Missouri DOC. “I am very proud of this notable accomplishment of our DOC and contracted medical and mental health staff for their dedication and hard work.”

“Our staff members at Tipton and all across the state demonstrate their dedication and skill when caring for patients every day,” said Ralf Salke, vice president of operations for CMS. “Achieving accreditation alone from NCCHC is a formidable task, but being recognized as the national Facility of the Year illustrates the commitment of our team and the DOC.”

For nearly 18 years CMS has been the contract healthcare provider at Missouri DOC facilities. Today, 20 of the state’s 21 correctional centers are accredited by NCCHC. Tipton Correctional Center will formally receive the Facility of the Year Award in October at the National Conference on Correctional Health Care.

LuxSauna Introduces New Patent Pending far Infrared Heating Pad for Back Pain, Sciatica and Upper Leg Pain

LuxSauna Introduces New Patent Pending far Infrared Heating Pad for Back Pain, Sciatica and Upper Leg Pain

New Far Infrared Heating Pad; TheraPad proves to be the easy to use miracle cure for eliminating back pain, sciatica and stimulating unbelievable comfort while sitting in your car or in your office chair.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 7, 2005

Melt away aches and pains with this far infrared-heated car, office seat.

An estimated 80 percent of the population will suffer back pain at some time in their lives, making back pain the second leading reason for doctor visits. In addition, back pain is the number one cause of disability in people 45 and younger. Although more than 25,000 surgeries for back pain are performed in the U. S. each year, research shows that many such surgeries may not be necessary and that, whether a person has back pain surgery or not, four years later their condition reappears.

Sitting Can Be A Pain In The Back. There is almost twice as much pressure on your back when you are sitting incorrectly than there is if you stand up. Those most at risk are the people who not only spend long periods of time in the car, but also those who sit in front of their computer for hours a day. We all know who we are!

If you’re reading this article, you might be familiar with Sciatica, often referred to as sciatic nerve pain or Piriformis Syndrome; a radiating pain running down the back of your leg that just won’t go away. If what I’m telling you sounds all too familiar don’t worry, help is finally here.

Back Pain: A Problem of Evolution. Man's physical structure reflects similarities and changes that have occurred through evolution. From an anthropological perspective there is a common belief amongst doctors and students of anatomy that man's back problems started when he began walking upright on two legs. Our earliest primordial ancestors moved about on all fours.

In the course of standing erect, the spine once functioning as a beam (horizontal plane), now had to adapt itself to the disadvantages of becoming a pillar (vertical plane), in which the spinal discs were now detrimentally placed. The discs in acting as shock absorbers were now more vulnerable if the body suffered any stress, trauma or injury. The body had to constantly battle against the forces of gravity with the inadequacy of only two supports.

A posture variation, which has come with man's ability to stand erect, is 'Sitting.' Without the aid of the arms or external supports, sitting erect placed a tremendous new strain on the lower back region. University studies have shown that the discs in the lumbar-sacral region, the major site of back pain, are subjected to greater pressure when a person is sitting than when he or she is standing.

This may explain why so many people in sedentary jobs suffer with back ailments. Today, we sit more and walk less. Recreation for far too many of us is to sit in front of a computer or television set, or to sit in a car for long periods of time.

The evolution Of man into the world of advanced technology has certainly become a pain in the back.

How the TheraPad Works:

The TheraPad infrared heating pad is unlike any heating pad in the past. It is totally different from other heating pads on the market. Other heating pads use ordinary heat elements that only warm the surface of the skin and only a few layers deep. The infrared light waves of the TheraPad infrared heating pad go through the skin through the muscle all the way to joints, bones, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels.

The infrared light waves emitted by the TheraPad infrared heating pad are the highest quality infrared light waves. There are three types of infrared light waves: near, medium and far. The far infrared light waves are the best for this purpose and have been found in clinical studies to be most beneficial to humans. The far infrared light waves emitted by the TheraPad infrared heating pad relieve pain for many reasons, which include the following:

· The TheraPad infrared heating pad goes directly to the source of the pain and also helps heal damaged cells.

· It has been found in clinical studies that damaged cells in the body that cause pain have a negative electrical charge. The far infrared waves from the TheraPad change the electrical charge from an unhealthy negative to a healthy positive almost instantly.

· The far infrared waves from the TheraPad infrared heating pad gently warm all tissues, bones, and joints in the damaged area. In response to this increased warming, the body goes into a homeostatis response, which means it tried to maintain temperature. To do this, it expands blood vessels to get more blood flow to the area. This produces great benefits.

More blood brings more nutrition. And, the expanded blood vessels increase the

Capacity to carry away toxins and lactic acid, which cause pain. Inflammation is then reduced.

· When the far infrared waves from the TheraPad infrared heating pad warm the

Tissues in the damaged area, the tissues expand. Expanding the tissues relieves pressure on nerves.

· When the far infrared light waves from the TheraPad infrared heating pad warm the muscles, the muscles relax and relieve tension. This brings overall relaxation and soothing to go along with the pain relief.

· The far infrared waves make the synovial fluid in joints healthier. Joints are lubricated and nourished by synovial fluid. Synovial fluid contains an enzyme. If this enzyme is out of control, the fluid actually works to damage cartilage in the joints. The far infrared light waves emitted by the TheraPad infrared heating pad helps balance the enzyme in synovial fluid so it will not cause harm.

Infrared heat has been tested for effectiveness and safety in many hospitals and university clinics. These studies have found that the infrared heating pad is safe to use as long as you wish. You can never use TheraPad infrared heating pad for too long a time.

Consistent use of the TheraPad infrared heating pad will eliminate the need of buying as many pain relief drugs, which are expensive and can cause a multitude of additional health problems. Also pain relief drugs only relieve pain artificially by interrupting the natural pain impulse.

Asbestos Contamination In Libby, Montana, A "National Tragedy," Says New York Mesothelioma Lawyer

Asbestos Contamination In Libby, Montana, A "National Tragedy," Says New York Mesothelioma Lawyer

NY attorney Joseph W. Belluck says EPA action underscores the need for further action and health care for area residents exposed to asbestos.

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 26, 2009

A new federal declaration of a public health emergency in two Montana towns contaminated with asbestos highlights the serious health consequences of asbestos exposure and the need to minimize it, says a New York personal injury attorney.

"The situation in Libby, Montana, is a national tragedy," said Joseph W. Belluck, a partner at the New York law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP (http://www. belluckfox. com/), which handles asbestos-related injury cases. "It shows how far-reaching the adverse effects of breathing asbestos can be. Not only were the miners affected, but their families and the entire town suffered."

U. S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson announced Wednesday that the agency has determined a public health emergency exists in the towns of Libby and Troy in northwest Montana. In recent years hundreds of asbestos-related disease cases have been documented in those communities.

It is the first time the EPA has made a determination under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, commonly referred to as the Superfund law, that conditions at a site constitute a public health emergency.

The EPA's action underscores the need for further action and health care for area residents who have been or may be exposed to asbestos, Belluck said.

"Based on what we've seen in our practice, it's no surprise that the first declaration of a public health emergency under CERCLA involves asbestos exposure," Belluck said.

Investigations performed by the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry have found the incidence of occurrence of asbestosis, a lung condition, in the Libby area to be much higher than the national average for the period from 1979-1998.

Acumen Fund Announces Investment in Western Seed Company Limited to Improve Productivity of Low-Income Farmers in East Africa

Acumen Fund Announces Investment in Western Seed Company Limited to Improve Productivity of Low-Income Farmers in East Africa

Improved Hybrid Maize Seeds More than Double Yields

Nairobi, Kenya (PRWEB) April 21, 2010

Acumen Fund, a nonprofit venture firm addressing poverty in South Asia and East Africa, today announced a US$2.1 million investment in Western Seed Company Limited (Western Seed), a Kenya-based producer of improved hybrid maize seed that increases the productivity of low-income farmers. African Seed Investment Fund, which invests in businesses to improve the delivery of quality certified seed to smallholder farmers in eastern and southern Africa, contributed another US$1.9 million. Western Seed plans to use the capital from both funds to help quadruple over five years its seed output and sales, and to boost the number of farmer households served per year from 200,000 to over 850,000, improving the lives of more than four million people.

"Acumen Fund's patient capital investment in Western Seed is intended to enhance the food security and economic independence of Kenya's smallholder farmers," said Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO, Acumen Fund. "Maize represents the primary source of income and food security for rural Kenyan families, so when we identified the opportunity to boost its local output through an investment in Western Seed, we seized it, and we expect it will have a scalable impact on reducing poverty in Kenya and beyond."

Millions of families in Kenya rely on maize for food and income. The vast majority of these families holds less than 2 hectares of land and uses inefficient technology, which often leads them to suffer from small and irregular maize crop yields. In 2007, the average maize yield in Kenya was less than half the global average and a fifth of the average yield for rain-fed maize in the state of Iowa in the United States.

"Western Seed's hybrid maize varieties more than double yield in Kenya compared to farm-saved seed, and can generate a 25% increase over our competitors' seed," said Saleem Esmail, CEO, Western Seed. "We offer smallholder farmers the choice to purchase superior performing seeds, which can typically provide a return of up to six times the original investment. The potential for Western Seed to scale is tremendous."

While hybrid seed has been around for many years and can provide enormous increases in yield, adoption rates are still low in Kenya due to a lack of supply and of appropriate marketing and distribution strategies. In order to market its seeds to its target geographies, Western Seed has developed an innovative Direct Access Sales program to reach farmers in deep rural communities. This strategy allows the company to clearly demonstrate the benefit of using its seed by preparing local "farmer-trainers" who are nominated by the community and serve as both sales representatives and extension officers to local smallholder farmers. Through this program, Western Seed is extending the reach of its productive input to farmers who previously did not have access due to the high cost of transportation, and is able to deliver valuable agricultural information through its appointed agents. Furthermore, the program is creating greater stability by challenging local retailers who have increasingly sold adulterated, counterfeit, or expensive product.

Acumen Fund has sent one of their 2010 Fellows, Josephat Byaruhanga, to help Western Seed better target its Direct Access Sales and measure its impact. The Acumen Fund Fellows Program cultivates the next generation of global leaders by offering talented young professionals the unique opportunity to provide on-the-ground management support to Acumen investees in East Africa and South Asia.

"Western Seed's mission is to promote sustainability for the smallholder farmer," said Biju Mohandas, East Africa Director, Acumen Fund. "Not only is Acumen Fund supporting farmers in Kenya, but the lessons we learn through our investment in Western Seed will enable us to understand better the economics of providing inputs to smallholder farmers everywhere, especially around effective methods of marketing and distribution. In turn, these lessons will help us as we seek to create global business models to deliver critical goods and services, from healthcare to life-improving seed varieties, to the poor."

The Home Based Business Industry is Bigger than Ever, So Why are So Many People Still Unemployed and So Very Few People Even Finding Something to Suit Their Needs?

The Home Based Business Industry is Bigger than Ever, So Why are So Many People Still Unemployed and So Very Few People Even Finding Something to Suit Their Needs?

Every month thousands of people will fill out online forms, answer magazine advertisements, call into television commercials and radio ads looking for a way to make money at home. Sadly, however, very few ever earn what they are looking for.

(PRWEB) April 24, 2005

Even more amazing are the amount of people who everyday live their lives on their last leg, literally. Bankruptcy and unemployment plagues many homes that desire to have Mom at home and Dad with the family. The Golden Years have become nothing more than holding open a door at Costco or Walmart because Social Security is not all it was 'cracked' up to be. Face it-the average American spends his or her day making someone else wealthy and lives paycheck to paycheck borrowing from their Uncle Visa and Cousin Mastercard more than anyone wants to admit.

How can it be that homes are being built all over the US valued at over $ 500,000 and yet the average American is so in debt that they can't even meet their monthly bills? Could it be that we have been sold a bill of goods that is finally proving to be a lie? Could it be that letters after your name don't necessarily mean you're guaranteed a secure position of employment? Is our generation of children who couldn't read and whose ACT's that were dumbed down now stepping into Corporate America asking for life on a silver platter and life is not serving them well?

The Home Based Business Arena along with Self Employment seems to have a staggering record of people who lost it all, went bankrupt, lost their homes, their cars, even their health, marriages and in some rare cases all that they owned. What is it that makes these people so different than anyone else? We believe it's a matter of choice.

We were taught in school that you will become what you chose to become. We were taught to believe in ourselves, we were taught to follow our dreams, and yet when life slapped us hard in the face, many people gave up on even trying to think past the end of the week. There is however a way 'up' rather than a way 'out' that thousands are turning to each day, and that is taking control of their lives, once and for all.

If you are one who thought your dreams were just something that came into reality when you closed your eyes at night, and you have a strong desire to educate yourself on how to go 'up' rather than just a desire to get 'out' of where you are at, we'd love to hear from you. We are a group of purpose driven Moms and Dads; College Students, Sr. Citizens and Singles who are living life on purpose. We sure aren't going to promise you a get-rich-quick-scheme but we'd love to share with you what has helped thousands of our families find what a regular J-O-B didn't offer. Results sure do speak louder than words and we'd love to train you how to do what we have all learned from the comfort of our own home.

"Dental conditions have more to do with overall health than most people are aware of," says Dr. Andrea Brockman, president of OraMedica, as well as a dentist and former coronary care nurse. "For instance, employers recognize that obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease and diabetes, and take positive steps to encourage better food choices and physical activity."

However, food choices, digestion, and absorption of nutrients are greatly affected by chewing, which can be hindered by tooth or jaw pain, mouth infections, missing teeth, or dry mouth.

And weight management is not the only condition affected by dental health. Research shows that gum disease is a major risk factor in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and premature or underweight births (http://www. oramedica. com/resourceguide. html). In fact, the U. S. government now classifies periodontal disease as a greater risk to the development of heart disease and stroke than high cholesterol. Considering that statistics now reveal that women have a greater chance of developing heart disease than ever before, oral health awareness is not only prudent, it can be lifesaving.

This dental tips booklet is not only useful as a woman's health benefit, but it also serves as unbiased health education from a trusted source (http://www. oramedica. com/subscribe. html). According a survey released by J. D. Power and Associates, only 2% of employees have confidence in the health information their employers offer, compared to a whopping 70% of employees who trust the health advice of their primary care doctor.

Dr. Vincent DiLorenzo, OraMedica's chief executive, surmises that, "Although questions regarding dental advice were not part of this survey, useful health information, written by a health-conscious dentist to help women make smarter and cost-effective dental decisions, can only help to build trust for the messenger: the employer."

In addition to their own health issues, and being the primary consumers of healthcare, women have the added responsibility of pregnancy, childcare and eldercare. The practical, health enhancing information found in "Take a Holistic Bite Out of Dentistry for Women" is designed to reduce the number of sick days for women when incorporated into routines for themselves, as well as for dependants.

"Making sure that our dental health tips booklets, part of the HealthyGates Consumer Dental Wellness program, integrate with and support total health is what responsible and holistic healthcare is all about," adds Dr. Brockman. After 25 years of taking care of the dental needs of patients with chronic health problems, she feels strongly that companies who sponsor fitness, nutrition, and stress management programs to lower health care costs can expect even greater savings and a healthier workforce when a wellness program that has teeth in it is initiated.

Improving Long-term Outlook for Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Improving Long-term Outlook for Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

For children battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, post-treatment testing that measures the amount of leftover disease cells in the bloodstream or bone marrow can provide critical clues to their long-term prognosis. Now a new test calle Flow Cytometry can better detect residual disease after treatment to better anticipate relapses.

Plainview, NY (PRWEB) September 27, 2006

For children battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, post-treatment testing that measures the amount of leftover disease cells in the bloodstream or bone marrow can provide critical clues to their long-term prognosis. That’s because numerous medical studies have confirmed that the greater the amount of residual leukemic cells in blood and bone marrow, the more likely is the risk of leukemia to relapse after remission. Fortunately, a laboratory technique called Flow Cytometry is able to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) more accurately than previous tests, giving doctors and patients the information they need to predict and manage their future health care needs.

“Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is the most commonly diagnosed childhood malignancy, accounting for nearly a quarter of all childhood malignancies diagnosed each year in the U. S.,” notes Dr. Kambiz Merati M. D., a NY-area hematopathologist with Acupath Laboratories. “While the ‘cure rate’ [percentage of patients who remain disease-free for five years after treatment] has risen dramatically over the past two decades, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia also has a fairly high recurrence rate of about 20 percent,” Dr. Merati adds. “For these children, it is imperative that we find better ways to anticipate relapses, so they are more likely to be re-diagnosed early and treated successfully.”

For years the standard test used to detect minimal residual disease after patients have completed treatment has been the polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, test. It identifies residual leukemia cells by searching for rearranged genes in the blood, which could develop into full-fledged leukemia again. Although its detection sensitivity is very high, PCR cannot detect a certain proportion of recurrent ALLs.

“Most cases of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia are comprised of very immature B - or T-cells. Since these leukemic cells are in a very primitive state, the gene rearrangements that are subject to detection by PCR might not have happened in them yet. Therefore, they might not be detectable by this technique” Dr. Merati explains. “Flow Cytometry, on the other hand, successfully identified MRD in almost all cases in a recent study,” he adds. According to this and similar studies, PCR fails to work in about 10% of cases with minimal residual disease, while the Failure rate of the Flow Cytometry is only 3%.1 “Interestingly,” Dr. Merati comments, “this makes Flow Cytometry particularly valuable for infants with ALL, where up to 40% of cases do not show the gene rearrangement detectable by PCR.”

Flow Cytometry identifies and sorts atypical cells using antibodies tied with fluorescent dyes, a technique that is simple, time-efficient and often more accurate than PCR. “Flow Cytometry testing is far less laborious and time-consuming than PCR, and so the results are often available to the physician within 24 hours,” Dr. Merati notes. “This technique also tends to be more informative than PCR in terms of subtypes of cells studied, as well as outcome prediction” he adds. In fact, according to a study in the March 2005 issue of the British Journal of Haematology, Flow Cytometry was more sensitive than gene rearrangement studies in detecting minimal residual disease, identifying it in 91% of all cases compared to 84% with PCR.

An accurate MRD assessment is a crucial component of every ALL patient’s long-term health care management plan, because the risk of recurrence is so high, and because it is so closely linked to MRD levels. In addition, studies have shown that the sooner patients relapse after their first treatment, the more difficult it is to eradicate the disease the second time around. Early detection of recurrence can enable physicians to customize treatment plans to fit the individual patient’s needs, from salvage chemotherapy to stem-cell transplant, with the goal of achieving long-term, disease-free survival.

“Childhood cancer can be a devastating diagnosis for families,” Dr. Merati says. “Fortunately, over the past several decades the pediatric oncology and pathology research communities have committed massive resources to the search for treatments and techniques that will improve and extend the lives of children with cancer and their families,” he concludes.

1. Four-color flow cytometry bypasses limitations of IG/TCR polymerase chain reaction for minimal residual disease detection in certain subsets of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. New Website for The Safety Line System Designed to Improve Hospital Patient Safety and Reduce Tragic Medical Errors Made Through the Intravenous Route

New Website for The Safety Line System Designed to Improve Hospital Patient Safety and Reduce Tragic Medical Errors Made Through the Intravenous Route

Dedicated to reducing costly medical errors and improving Intravenous drug administration safety, The Safety Line System™ will dramatically help protect patients and hospitals from adverse drug events. Currently all IV lines used in hospitals are clear and indistinguishable from each other. This makes it difficult to differentiate each line from the next. The Safety Line System provides the solution to this problem.

Guerneville, CA (PRWEB) July 16, 2009

The Safety Line System website has been redesigned to educate Nurses, Doctors and Hospitals to learn how Color Coded IV Line sets will save countless lives and billions of dollars.

Currently all IV lines used in hospitals are clear and indistinguishable from each other. This makes it difficult to differentiate each line from the next causing precious moments to be lost and mistakes to be made. Our patented product, Pat. No. US651.456.B1, the Safety Line System™, will provide the solution to this problem. It will provide a means to better organize medication administration, facilitate patient care, and most importantly decrease medication errors. Every facility that administers intravenous medications should utilize the Safety Line System™ since no one can have too many safety devices that help avert tragic yet avoidable medical tragedies.

The Safety Line System™ reduces hospital's risk and liability exposure to tragic, yet avoidable medical mistakes. Statistics show that over 770,000 patients are injured every year because of medication errors. Over 50% of medication errors are made via the intravenous route. Utilizing our patented color tinted IV lines will make it easier for the nursing team to safely identify and administer multiple medications, reducing costly medical errors.

With the hospitalized patient being sicker than ever before, and the wide variety and large number of medications being used, the likelihood of a medication error is increasing. Currently all IV lines are clear, whether it contains a potent and potentially lethal medication or simply normal saline; the number of IV lines can and do become confusing, tangled, and indistinguishable."

By adding color tinted IV lines for the second, third or more IV lines, the task of distinguishing lines becomes simple, and expedites the procedure. The health care professional can easily trace the line from the patient to the IV bag with the use of a color tinted IV line. The Safety Line System™ standardizes the process of administering IV medications. By using the Safety Line System™, the potential for injecting medication into the wrong line, or hanging a bag onto the wrong line, is eliminated.

IV errors can be fatal because, there are numerous IV drugs that are very high risk drugs with deadly side effects if given inappropriately or in incorrect dosage. In addition speed is an issue, the medication goes directly into the bloodstream and is thus available for rapid effect on the body. This means there is a little margin for a mistake before a tragic adverse drug event occurs to the patient,"

Intravenous (i. v.) medication errors are much more likely to injure patients as medications delivered by other routes of administration (pills or liquids). Many errors can occur in the I. V. medication-use process and effects can be immediate and deadly. Healthcare leaders and experts continue to focus attention on the issue of i. v. safety.

The Hospitals who continue to develop best practices to ensure safe i. v. medication use will be switching to The Safety Line System.

HOMEOWNERS CAN GAMBLE OR ACT NOW

Although Interest Rates Remain Steady

Consumers Should Review Financial Situations

Parsippany, NJ, (August 28, 2000) - With the recent FED announcement that interest rates are holding steady, maintaining the current 6.5 percentage, consumers may not be worried about paying high interest rates any longer. But according to Don Mather, senior vice president at Champion Mortgage, homeowners are in excellent position to capitalize on the steady interest rates before potential increases occur in the future.

According to financial analysts, interest rates will most likely remain steady through the presidential election on November 7, but could then be on the rise again before the year closes.

"Many people are unaware of just how much interest they are paying and how the rate increases have affected their debt scenario over the past year," said Mather. "But at the same time, homeowners could be missing out on the benefits of using their own home equity to help relieve the situation. Home equity loans can lower monthly payments through debt consolidation, lower interest rates significantly, provide for tax-deductions, while helping to get financial situations in order."

Mather explains that home equity loans can benefit those in these common financial areas:

· Debt Consolidation - According to the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, Americans have too much debt if they are spending more than 15 percent of their net income to repay unsecured credit (credit cards, students loans, etc.).

· Home Improvement - Using home equity can help cover the cost of new roofing or siding, heating or cooling system upgrades or a remodeling job.

· Higher Education - Home equity can help cover the costs of an education, particularly if the homeowner is ineligible for financial aid.

· Medical Costs - Instead of draining savings accounts to pay high deductible costs or for procedures not covered by health insurance, use the home to receive the appropriate treatment and to cover any extra costs.

But although a home equity loan can benefit most homeowners, Mather warns that they should not be used as a quick fix, but as a way to regain financial footing.

"Slowing spending is the first step to putting the financial house in order," said Mather. "Home equity loans can help people begin to repay debt on credit cards or other personal loans, but financial responsibility is the ultimate key when recovering from debt."

Mather concludes, "With the average interest rate on a standard credit card reaching more than 17 percent, homeowners are in position to explore the opportunities of home equity loans to help relieve debt, consolidate bills, lower interest rates and provide for tax deductions. Now is the time to act by putting your financial house in responsible order."

Media Advisory: Boston Consulting Group Experts Available to Discuss Landmark 'People' Study

Recruiting, Retaining and Developing Talent is Biggest 'People' Challenge Facing Companies in U. S. and Worldwide--and It's the One They Are Least Prepared to Handle, Says New Global Study Talent Management Is a More Urgent Priority Than Performance Management, Restructuring, Globalization, Diversity, Social Responsibility and Other Issues Typically Involving Human Resources Other Top People Challenges in U. S. Relate to the Talent Problem: Leadership Development, Dealing With Changing Work-Force Demographics and Managing Cultural Change Study Is Based on Survey of Nearly 5,000 Executives in 83 Countries and Markets--Largest and Most In-Depth of Its Kind

BOSTON (PRWEB) April 16, 2008

Recruiting, retaining and developing talent is the biggest "people" challenge facing companies in the United States and worldwide, and it's the one they are least ready to handle, according to a major new survey of nearly 5,000 executives in 83 countries and markets.

Talent management emerged as the most urgent priority not only among companies in the United States, but also among companies in every region of the world and in every industry. Other people challenges requiring urgent action, both in the United States and globally, are improving leadership development, managing demographics, and managing change and cultural transformation--issues closely linked to talent management.

Among U. S. executives and many others worldwide, these four challenges rank far above the more traditional imperatives of modern people management, such as measuring HR and employee performance, managing work-life balance, managing globalization, managing diversity and managing corporate social responsibility.

Managing demographics--i. e., adapting to an aging workforce and the shifting needs of incoming "Gen Y" employees--was rated the challenge whose importance will grow the most between now and 2015.

These are among the key findings and insights of "Creating People Advantage: How to Address HR Challenges Worldwide Through 2015," a report based on a global study conducted by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the World Federation of Personnel Management Associations (WFPMA) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The study, which included over 200 in-depth interviews with senior executives worldwide, is the most comprehensive review of global HR practices ever conducted.

"The corporate world is fundamentally shifting, and companies around the globe are ill-prepared to meet the challenges of an increasingly globalized marketplace," warned Anna Minto, a BCG partner and leader of the firm's People Advantage Initiative in the Americas. "While most CEOs and their executive teams are focused on quarterly results and managing the financial side of the business, they are at risk of neglecting the people side. The anticipated gap between the talent-related capabilities companies have now and what they expect to need by 2015 is significant across a number of dimensions. CEOs and other leaders need to ask themselves whether they're doing enough today, and putting the right resources in place, to prepare for the people challenges they'll face in just a few years."

Added Chuck Scullion, a BCG partner and leader of the firm's Organization practice in the Americas, "Human resources should be at the center of most companies' strategies--not an afterthought once the strategy is set. How can an organization manage a far-flung multicultural work force and find the talent needed in rapidly developing economies? How can it develop globally-minded leaders, and replace the knowledge and skills of retiring employees? These are difficult questions, and they require boardroom attention now to avoid a boardroom crisis later."

As examples of talent shortfalls, Scullion pointed to U. S. hospitals having a perennial shortage of nurses and other health care professionals; India not being able to meet its demand for IT experts; China lacking a sufficient number of experienced managers; and Germany having too few engineers.

"In the near future, finding and keeping talent may become harder than raising money in an IPO," Scullion said.

Ms. Minto and Mr. Scullion are available to speak about and elaborate on the findings. During a conversation, they can discuss, among other issues...

-- The talent management and retention initiatives that U. S. executives say they will need to step up between now and 2015.

-- What companies believe they'll do to manage the capacity loss that is resulting from the aging workforce.

-- Other steps that HR will take to help companies managing an aging workforce.

-- How companies and the HR function expect to spring into action to prepare leaders.

To arrange a conversation with BCG experts Anna Minto or Chuck Scullion, and/or to receive a copy of the report and supporting materials, please contact Alexandra Corriveau at Sommerfield Communications, Inc., at 212-255-8386 or alexandra@sommerfield. com.

IPCPR to York County Council: Businesses Should Decide Smoking or Not

IPCPR to York County Council: Businesses Should Decide Smoking or Not

Owners of businesses in York County, South Caroline should be allowed to continue to decide whether or not to permit smoking on their premises suggested the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association. The County Council anticipates a December 15 vote on a proposed countywide ban on smoking in public places.

Rock Hill, South Carolina (PRWEB) December 1, 2008

Owners of businesses in York County should be allowed to continue to decide whether or not to permit smoking on their premises suggested the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association.

The York County Council anticipates a December 15 vote on a proposed countywide ban on smoking in public places.

"Business owners have been making those decisions on their own since our country was founded and their right to do so was assured by the United States Constitution," says Chris McCalla, legislative director of the IPCPR. "If owners of businesses want to ban smoking from their premises, that's their constitutional right. It's also their employees' and customers' rights to stay or go somewhere else. The marketplace will determine if their decisions were right or wrong," McCalla said.

According to McCalla, smoking bans are usually based on a misplaced fear of secondhand smoke promoted by anti-tobacco forces.

"People blame secondhand smoke for many ailments. However, a recent study of 360,000 Europeans enrolled in one of the largest, longest health studies in the world shows that belly fat has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes while doubling one's risk of death. With all due respect, who's to say many of the ailments blamed on secondhand smoke weren't caused instead by waist sizes more than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women? Does that mean Twinkies and Big Macs should be banned next?" he asked.

"The 2006 Surgeon General's Report clearly concluded that secondhand smoke should not be considered a legitimate health or environmental hazard. Anti-tobacco groups contradict the actual findings of the Report which stress the insufficient evidence to support such claims," said McCalla.

"And if the Surgeon General's report actually said secondhand smoke is environmentally unsafe, wouldn't you think the Occupational Safety and Health Administration would be all over it? Instead, OSHA isn't anywhere near citing secondhand smoke as problematic in the workplace or elsewhere," McCalla pointed out. "OSHA set standards for secondhand smoke in the workplace that are substantially above that which might be found in a restaurant or bar, according to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory."

McCalla recommended that, based on reason and individual rights, the Council should vote down any measure to legislatively ban smoking in York County.

Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia: A Good Daughter, Inc. Looks at Eldercare

Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia: A Good Daughter, Inc. Looks at Eldercare

The Golden Girls looked at Eldercare, now A Good Daughter, Inc. takes another look at Eldercare

MARGATE, Fla. (PRWEB) July 20, 2005

ItÂ’s been twenty years since The Golden Girls was first broadcast. In the two decades that have passed, a trend that was first exposed on that show continues to grow ever stronger.

Women on the average live seven years longer than men and many women expect to be widows. Planning ahead for companionship is great, however according to Olga Brunner, founder of A Good Daughter (www. agooddaughter. com) there are health related benefits to this type of cohabitation.

“Many women simply do not have the local family support and their caregivers become the women they live with for companionship, cost savings, and compassion.” Brunner concedes this living arrangement is not a panacea and has developed a strong elder care program to provide a wide variety of solutions.

A Good Daughter based in Margate, Florida, recently reported that seventeen percent (17%) of caregivers quit their jobs to provide care for aging family members, and another 15% reduce their work hours to assist their loved ones.

Brunner recognized that this living arrangement does not work for everyone and noted that, “Our Professional Care Managers plan and organize care and services for the Broward and Palm Beach elderly population, affording families a peace of mind that their loved ones will find and secure services such as ongoing supervision of certified home care assistants, home maintenance and care, medication supervision, coordination of medical appointments and representation at these appointments, legal counsel, specialized air travel escorts, and many other services.”

Olga Brunner originally moved from California to Florida to care for her aging mother with Alzheimer's Disease. Having been affected by the daunting task of being a caregiver while employed, she became determined to start a business which would help other caregivers navigate the troubled waters of elder care. By founding A Good Daughter, Inc., she became a care manager who brings a personal awareness of the needs of close or long distance caregivers and their loved ones. Blanche, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia made great entertainment. Unfortunately most seniors lack that support system.

Announcing XCell-Imaging, the World’s First High-Definition MRI and CT Imaging Center for Specialized Stem Cell Applications and Diagnostics

The XCell-Center GmbH has teamed up with GE healthcare technology to bring its patients the latest in GE imaging technology: the newly introduced Signa Series 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance scanner (MRI) and the new Discovery HD CT 750 scanner (CT) for applied diagnostics.

Dusseldorf, Germany (PRWEB) June 19, 2010

The XCell-Center GmbH has teamed up with GE healthcare technology to bring its patients the latest in GE imaging technology: the newly introduced Signa Series 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance scanner (MRI) and the new Discovery HD CT 750 scanner (CT) for applied diagnostics.

With the opening of Xcell-Imaging, its flagship high-definition imaging center in Dusseldorf, Germany, the XCell-Center has raised the bar for autologous stem cell therapy and research.

The GE Signa 3.0 Tesla high-resolution magnetic resonance scanner allows an unparalleled level of detail which facilitates characterization of brain, heart, and other tissue, making it ideal for the Xcell-Center’s work in applied stem cell therapy. High definition MRI plays a critical role in the characterization of cell markers which are used to assess treatment efficacy for applied stem cell therapy, as well as cell distribution throughout the organs and tissues. It also plays a key role in the planning and follow-up of stereotactic and endoscopic stem cell implantation into the brain.

The new Discovery HD CT750 CT scanner is a High-Definition & Ultra-Low-Dose CT. It allows unprecedented image detail while delivering extremely low radiation doses. For example, the CT750 is used to administer stem cells into joints with high precision, or to visualize stenosis and calcification of arteries throughout the body with unmatched precision, allowing differentiation of `soft` and `hard` plaques.

“We are very proud to offer our patients these exciting new imaging technologies. It is extremely important to investigate the effects of the stem cells and their distribution in such detail: The closer you look, the more you see,” stated XCell-Center CEO, Dr. Cornelis Kleinbloesem.

Ayrshire Couple Offer Support for Tony Blair’s Respect Agenda

Ayrshire Couple Offer Support for Tony Blair’s Respect Agenda

A married couple from Ayrshire, Scotland have written to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair welcoming his statement in a recent interview that the Government is planning state intervention in order to prevent potentially problem babies becoming problem teenagers of the future.

(PRWEB) September 13, 2006

A married couple from Ayrshire, Scotland have written to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair welcoming his statement in a recent interview that the Government is planning state intervention in order to prevent potentially problem babies becoming problem teenagers of the future.

In his statement Tony Blair said: “If we are not prepared to predict and intervene far more early, then there are children that are going to grow up in families that we know perfectly well are completely dysfunctional, and the kids a few years down the line are going to be a menace to society and actually a threat to themselves.”

In their letter to the Prime Minister, Murdoch and Lilian MacDonald write: “One of the reasons we particularly welcome your statement is because we deduce from it that, like us, you believe dysfunctional behaviour stems from early childhood, and that preventing it at this stage is more sensible and effective than trying to rectify it later.

“The particular dysfunctional behaviour that we are interested in, and have personal experience of, is alcoholism.

“We are two former alcoholics who by confronting and addressing our problems from childhood have successfully overcome our so-called “addiction”, to the extent that we are now able to drink sociably and responsibly again, thus disproving the conventional wisdom that alcoholism is an incurable disease from which only remission is possible by embracing life-long sobriety.

“We have told our story in a book called “Phoenix in a Bottle”, published last year.

“We believe that society is now ready to outgrow the myths and dogma about alcoholism so long promulgated and perpetuated by the pseudo-religious cult Alcoholics Anonymous, and accept the fact that alcoholism, like other “addictions” is not an illness, but a behaviour problem rooted in childhood that can be prevented.

“Although we oppose the teachings of Alcoholics Anonymous, we are even more appalled by the way in which private clinics have piggy-backed AA, hijacked their 12-Step programme, and are selling it to an unsuspecting public for quite astronomic amounts of money. At least in AA it is free of charge.

“But what is worse now is that the National Health Service sends many alcoholic patients to these clinics, and picks up the tab for their stay and their “treatment”, thus wasting funds from the public purse that could otherwise have gone towards preventing alcoholism in the first place.

“Our attempts to ascertain how much public money is squandered in this way have been to no avail. Perhaps if you were to initiate an enquiry, an exact figure may be divulged.”

In conclusion, Murdoch and Lilian MacDonald tell Prime Minister Tony Blair: “If our personal experiences of family dysfunctionality and its consequences can help to promote and enlighten your Respect agenda, we would be happy to meet with you to discuss our ideas.”

ABOUT LILIAN AND MURDOCH

Lilian and Murdoch’s lives were devastated by alcoholism, but they have now recovered so completely that they now not only lead normal lives again, but are also able to drink in a perfectly sociable manner once more.

That goes against the teaching of Alcoholics Anonymous, and of many alcoholism treatment centres throughout the world.

But Lilian (62) and Murdoch (60) believe that lifelong sobriety is not the solution to alcoholism, as this only treats the symptoms and not the causes of the problem, and is merely a damage limitation exercise.

The couple argue that alcoholism, in common with other self-harming disorders like bulimia, anorexia and self-mutilation, often stems from problems experienced in childhood.

And if these problems can be identified and properly addressed, then the problem behaviour can be cured.

Twelve years ago the couple had hit rock bottom, sleeping rough for two weeks on the streets of Cambridge, where a quarter of a century previously as an undergraduate Murdoch had received an honours degree in English Literature at Magdalene College. They had moved to Cambridge from Ayr with the idea of Murdoch doing research for a doctorate, but had reverted to their old habits, started binge drinking, and been thrown out of their lodgings.

After a fortnight, and when they were just about at the end of their tether, two nurses on their way home after a Saturday night out took pity on Lilian and Murdoch, bought them a cup of tea and found them a place in a homeless hostel.

They spent the next twelve months there getting to the roots of their alcoholism. They tried AA one last time, before concluding that it was a quasi-religious cult whose ideas on alcoholism were inadequate and outdated.

Instead, by reading psychology, they decided that the causes of their alcoholic behaviour lay in problems experienced during childhood. And that once these problems were realised and addressed, there was no longer any need for escape through alcoholism, and they could even drink normally like other people again.

Ten years after selling newspapers from a stand in Market Square, Cambridge, so that he and Lilian could get back on their feet financially, Murdoch is now a freelance business and financial journalist, and also runs his own public relations consultancy.

And in order to pass on the benefits of their experience to others who still have problems with alcohol, the couple have written their book “Phoenix in a Bottle”.

Reviewing the book, American addiction expert Dr Stanton Peele PhD commented:

“Phoenix in a Bottle is a modern version of The Days of Wine and Roses, and tells the true story of how two people who entered a period of desperate drinking stayed with one another in a close loving relationship, and emerged from their alcoholism able to drink responsibly again.

“Both a wonderful love story and a challenge to conventional wisdom about how people can recover from drinking problems, Phoenix in a Bottle gives people hope, and helps them to confront their own demons - alcohol or otherwise.”

Personal Trainer in St John's Wood Offers Free Valentine Workout for Couples

Personal Trainer in St John's Wood Offers Free Valentine Workout for Couples

Imran Ilahi, wants the local romantics to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2010 with his unique partner training program.

London (PRWeb UK) February 10, 2010

Fat loss expert and owner of Energie Personal Fitness, Imran Ilahi, wants the local romantics to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2010 with his unique partner training program.

For most people Valentine’s Day is about indulging their partners in wine, chocolate and flowers but this St John’s Wood personal trainer shows you how to keep the love for each other with his specially adapted partner training session workout for couples.

Personal training with your partner brings a different level of motivation, a fun element of competitiveness and provides extra support for each other during the workout programme. The Valentine’s workout will definitely get you both pumped up for the rest of the day!

As shown by our clients the results achieved by doing the partner training can change lives:

“I joined Energie in St John's Wood when I moved back to London after spending three years in New York. The New York lifestyle had taken its toll on my body and I wanted to lose some weight and tone up before my wedding in August. In just 2 months of training with my fiancé, Imran and the rest of the team, I shed over 16 pounds. Through a combination of intense cardio training and strength exercises, I was able to reach my weight goals without having to diet, while maintaining muscle mass and generally feeling healthier and having more energy. The team keep the work-outs interesting and challenging, which helps keep me motivated to achieve my goals. I think personal fitness is hugely important to leading a healthy, fulfilling life and if you can enjoy yourself while keeping fit, well that's even better.” Chris

“Deciding to join Energie was probably the best thing my husband and I could have done for ourselves. It was a slow start in the beginning given I had a no prior personal training experience (rather no training experience at all!) however the team adapted the training schedules as per my fitness levels. Since joining Energie, I have not only toned up physically, losing 14 cm of my waist in the first 6 months) but in general feel a lot better about myself. I have really enjoyed being able to train in the gym with my husband as well and get extra motivation from having him there! The team at Energie have been absolutely brilliant in motivating and challenging me without excessive restrictions on regular habits.”

Priyanka

The workouts will be challenging but effective - exercises such as the plank challenge, shadow boxing and kangaroo jumps will be performed at high intensity! So be prepared to work and sweat hard!
