Since St. Brendan's May 16 Feast Day naturally inspires thoughts of heroic adventure, the Franciscan Sisters invite all graduates discerning their future path and vocation call to immerse themselves in this buoyant instrumental that evokes the Irish saint's heroic journeying. May all find Christ on their personal journey of self-discovery.
Alison was "…inspired to write "The Wonderful Sea Voyage" after watching a program on the Discovery Channel about the wanderings of the Christian monk Brendan the Navigator. According to legend, Brendan made a voyage from the west coast of Ireland to Newfoundland around 550 AD possibly becoming the first European to travel to the New World. Brendan and his company of 14 monks traveled for 7 years in a small leather curragh enduring many hardships but experiencing many fantastic adventures as well. I tried to capture the feel of the sea and some of the drama of Brendan's adventure in this tune."
The former investment banker (with a bachelor's degree in History and Literature from Harvard and an MBA from UCLA) toured with Alison Krauss and Union Station before forming The Alison Brown Quartet. Her critically-acclaimed albums include the Grammy winning Fair Weather (2000 Best Country Instrumental Performance). Alison has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered and in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. She is co-founder of Compass Records Group which oversees more than 600 releases, and which has been called by Billboard Magazine "one of the greatest independent labels of the last decade." Alison currently serves on the Board of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce.
As Franciscan Sisters' postulant, Marie Wilhelm observed, "'Voyage' … is a really wonderful song! … she really captures the ambiance of a voyage and this reminds me of what is going on in my life right now. I am in for an adventure going to Arizona and seeing what it is like to be on mission in the West. I can't wait. I will think of this song when I am on the airplane!"
Another of the Sisters' women in formation, Postulant Kara Martin, shared her enthusiasm. "Wow! This a beautiful song! It makes me think of the joyfulness and adventure that one finds in a journey with God. It's a song I could listen to again and again without getting tired of it. Amazing!"
"We want to present our life as a viable option. Personal invitation is always best; however, we became convinced that real conversations can begin by using the language of images and music," said Sr. Julie Ann Sheahan, OSF, Directress of Vocations for the Franciscan order.
Established in 1869, the Roman Catholic Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity serve in Catholic health care, education and parish ministries throughout the United States, and offer discernment retreats for Catholic Women.
