Armed with a failure prediction, the user or system manager can back up key data, replace a suspect device prior to data loss, or avoid undesired downtime.

M.A. R.T. monitors the disks performance, bad sectors, calibration, CRC errors, disk spin up time, distance between the head and the disk, temperature, features of medium, heads, motor or servo-mechanism. In all, over 35 attributes are covered by S. M.A. R.T. The errors that the system can detect can be predicted by a number of methods. Currently the SMART system can detect around 70% of all hard drive errors.

In response to overwhelming interest in online, non-credit, career training courses, Lamar University has expanded their course offerings to accommodate what are considered ‘hot trend’ areas.

Both programs give prospective employees the skills necessary to seek jobs various expanding occupations. What about now? Are baby boomers still a force to be reckoned with?

We are prominent in the work force, are politically motivated, surf and shop the internet, read, listen to CDs, play video games (no kidding), take vacations, frequent restaurants, travel, buy luxury items (more than any other demographic) such as plasma TVs, new cars, boats and houses. We help provide for our children, spoil our grandchildren, and today more than ever, take care of our aging parents.



And in case you havenÂ’t realized it, YAPS are a demographic.



The YAPS demographic is growing faster than you can shake a stick.



When you consider that every 7 seconds someone turns 50, that means the “YAPPIE” population increases every 7 seconds. The mind boggles at our numbers and the power we can (still) yield.



Sadly, we are a virtually untapped market. So marketers, wake up and start tapping. We are tired of being ignored. YAPS will spend upward of three trillion dollars in 2005 on anything and everything that prolongs our (forgive me) yappiness.



We do NOT roll over and play dead once we turn 50. We are still that “narcissistic, self indulgent group” we were when we were baby boomers, and we still believe the world owes us a living. We are alive and kicking, so you better not ignore us.



We are now demanding pop-culture status



We believe the time is right for we “former boomers” to be recognized, appreciated and have our very own pop designation.



There were hippies, yippies, and yuppies. Now, make way for us. 2005 is definitely the year of the YAPS!

The experiment, called "Dynamic Solar", is being conducted at the American Clay facility in Albuquerque, NM, starting this month. It is expected to run for at least a year. They have built five identical test structures, 7'h x 8'w x5'd, of frame construction with R13 fiber-glass bat insulation, and one door each. They break down in this way:

 One has cement stucco exterior with interior paint.  One has vinyl siding exterior and interior paint.  One has cement stucco exterior with American Clay interior plaster.  One has vinyl siding exterior with American Clay interior plaster.  One has American Clay's soon-to-launch lime stucco on exterior with American Clay interior plaster.



All the units have on the inside an identical data logger, called Spectrum 2000, with an additional one on the outside monitoring exterior atmosphere conditions around the units. The Spectrum 2000 measures the relative humidity and temperature in a space. By comparing these, one can determine how much energy will be needed to keep a building comfortable. Once they get a baseline data for each unit, they can then start shifting conditions to determine how to maximize energy savings.



"Over time we have received information about energy savings from customers," says Croft Elsaesser, American Clay co-Founder and CEO. "At first we discounted their claims. But as more information came in, we began to look at whether there was validity to what they were saying, including one Pennsylvania graduate student who called us about energy variations in a house he was monitoring with half clay, half paint. This experiment is a real world approach to get a direct correlation to the different materials, and their impact on our energy usage. I think when the results come in, we will have the data to quantify what the energy savings could be if our plaster is used on a project. It will change the way people think about the interior materials that they use, and the value of clay for the interior walls."



The internationally-recognized Greenbuild Expo presents the perfect opportunity to announce how a company already recognized for its thoroughly sustainable product contribution to building and design is constantly checking itself to innovate behind the scenes.



One client who claims energy savings and inspired the experiment is an architecture firm that remodeled a 1950s building. The exterior walls, roofing, insulation and substrate materials are the same throughout, but a closed-off hallway separates two sides of the building - one side is covered inside with high-quality zero-VOC paint, and the other side with American Clay plaster. They have shown a great difference in energy use between the two separately-metered areas, with significant savings on the American Clay side.

Entries may be made by individual or groups of children (for example, 4H groups, classrooms, etc.). The basic message to the entry needs to address why a particular Golden Retriever is a Hero Dog or Canine With A Cause. That is, just what sets him or her apart with respect to "unique skills, special talents, and superior work ethic." The Golden Retriever must be one that is personally known. For example, it could be a family member, a Golden that belongs to close friends or someone known to the family, a Golden that the youngster personally works with in a facility, etc.



If the entry is being submitted in written form, it should have a title and be written in clear sentences that displays good grammar and correct capitalization and punctuation. It can be sent with or without photographs, but photos will certainly provide 'extra credit' and give the entry an edge over photo-less entries. The name of the photographer, responsible for taking each photo, will need to be provided, so that he/she can be given credit for their contribution. And, a brief description of the pictured Golden in each photo should be noted (such as formal and/or call name, sex, age in photo). Also, if any persons appear in these photos, a statement must be enclosed verifying that they are 'okay' with their images appearing here at the site.
