At the beginning of this month, California Rep. Henry Waxman (http://waxman. house. gov/) was released from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after treatment from fainting in his office. While on C-SPAN, Waxman was recorded saying that Restless Legs Syndrome is a disease created by pharmaceutical companies to make more money. In a video of this interview (http://www. youtube. com/watch? v=xrwV6viF0-A) that has circulated on YouTube and news sites throughout July, Waxman described his experience arriving at the hospital after fainting:



"Somebody asked me, 'Why is your knee jerking?' And I thought I was making a joke, and I said, 'Well I have Restless Leg Syndrome.' Now, I don't think there is such a thing as restless leg syndrome. I'll probably hear from all those people who have it. But I thought that Restless Leg Syndrome was a disease that was created by a drug company that wanted to sell a drug for the disease they had created. And I was making a joke. Well, when I got out of the hospital, I looked at my record, it said, 'He claims to have Restless Leg Syndrome.' Well, I don't know if there is such a thing or not. I don't have it. But a lot of people start thinking they have medical problems because they've seen too many of these commercials. I don't think that's doing the public a lot of good. It's certainly making the drug companies richer, but it's not doing a lot of good for the public."



Ironically, right after this statement, a caller from Virginia phoned in to deny Rep. Waxman's point. This caller, named Scott, said, "Rep. Waxman, as someone who does have Restless Leg Syndrome (http://www. atlantasleep. com/common-disorders. php) I can tell you that it does exist." After laughter from Waxman, the caller continued, "It's a terrible thing. I had achieved that (RLS) through a back injury."



For those who struggle daily with the disease, Rep. Waxman's statement is anything but humorous. Ms. Elaine Gayle, a woman from Atlanta diagnosed with RLS said, "Restless Leg Syndrome definitely does exist. My sister has it so bad that she sometimes has to stop her car just to walk around and move her legs. When you have RLS, you just can't keep your legs still. At night it's a problem as well. Someone like Rep. Waxman dismissing it is simply a shame."



Russell Rosenberg, Ph. This process results in a package that can be recycled in traditional paperboard recycling streams without the concerns of contamination due to a polyester layer and metal content.



Also a winner was Ball Horticultural Co.’s new SoilWrap® bio-based plantable, compostable plant container, said to completely eliminate 100% of the environmental impact of the package, while reducing related fuel emissions. The bottomless pot design depends upon the use of Mirel polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) sugar-based resins. Household Essentials LLC won an award for its Ironing Board Cover & Pad. The laundry and storage products company eliminated the polyvinyl chloride pouch package and designed a cover and pad with a sewn-in pouch that becomes the primary package when the product is folded up and tucked into it. A 100%-recycled paperboard bellyband around the cloth construction carries marketing information in nontoxic ink.



Bway Corp. won for its 100%-recyclable pail that provides an enhanced package footprint. The 5-gallon Eco-Pail™ affords a number of sustainability advantages over a traditional high-density polyethylene pail. And ultimately, it provides a cradle-to-cradle alternative to a package that typically is disposed of in a landfill. 74% Believe Recovery Will Take 18 Months or Longer.

PayCycle, Inc, America's #1 online payroll service, today released the results of a proprietary survey that found 58% of small business owners do not feel the government is addressing their needs. Sixty-nine percent (69%) say they are not directly impacted by the credit squeeze because they don't need more credit, but 91% are still worried about the economy.



When it comes to economic recovery, nearly 3 out of 4 (74%) of small business owners believe the recovery will take 18 months or longer; 19% per cent believe a recovery could happen within 12 months and only 8% believe a recovery is six months away.



Fourteen percent (14%) indicate they are postponing investment and 8 percent (8%) are postponing hiring plans because they can't get a loan. Nine percent (9%) indicated they may need to close their businesses due to lack of credit.



"It's not primarily the credit squeeze that is worrying small business; the clear majority of them don't need more credit. What they are most worried about is losing customers as consumer spending contracts," said Jim Heeger, president and CEO of PayCycle. "And, it's clear that small business owners are hunkering down for a slow recovery that they believe will last well into 2010."



Small Business Owners Share Survival Tactics



The survey found that small business owners are using a variety of tactics to survive the economic crisis. Some are laying off employees or turning to contract labor to save costs, some are offering new services or special discounts, many are delaying equipment purchases, and most are shaving costs from various operational line items and personal expenses.

"I have cut back on everything that is unnecessary. Drive less, buy less. Question myself on every item. Do I really need that? Change phone services, cut cable packages, cut back on contributions to SEP and IRA, cut back on overpaying mortgage, change health insurance options, change car insurance options, keep the house warmer, have kid's party at a park instead of a fancy facility," said Lee-Anne Steinhardt, owner of TransRX in Florida.



"I have moved to a less expensive location and my husband and I have had to come out of retirement and return to work. We also had to cut our payroll, including laying off my own daughter, a single mother. I am almost 60 and my husband is soon to be 65 and a heart attack survivor. You do what you have to do to get through these tough times", commented Kathy Braatz, co-owner of KC's Drivers School in Wisconsin.



"We are robbing Peter to pay Paul like everyone else. Pay advances are non-existent, benefits are gone and purchasing is limited to what's absolutely necessary. We're taking care of each other and hanging on to what we possess the best we can," said Lynn Vosburgh of Vivid Ink, in Michigan.



The survey, conducted between October 17 and October 21, 2008, compiled responses from 215 small businesses randomly selected from PayCycle's broad, national base of over 75,000 small business customers.

What makes 12-24 year olds happy? That was the question MTV hired the futurist consulting and research firm Social Technologies to answer earlier this year.

What makes 12-24 year olds happy? That was the question MTV hired the futurist consulting and research firm Social Technologies to answer earlier this year.



The important new study led to surprising findings about this group.

"Youth will continue to perplex adults in their pursuit of happiness," explains Andy Hines, Social Technologies' director of custom projects, who led the study. "They will exhibit a careful mixture of idealism and aspirations, tempered with a grasp of realities and practicalities."



Hines and his team found youths will pursue four pathways to happiness:



1. Transitional Tradition



BFF. Friends are and will continue to be the most important relationships contributing to youth happiness. 80% of the youth polled said that having lots of close friends is very or somewhat important; 23% said that when they go out with friends, they stop feeling unhappy.



Parents Needed. Despite minor annoyances, youth will continue to depend on their parents as a vital source of security and happiness. Nearly half of the respondents mentioned at least one of their parents as a hero.



Religion à la Carte. Youth will increasingly seek happiness via spirituality and faith. "I'm not religious, but having spiritual life is important," said Steven B., 21, of Atlanta. "There needs to be a purpose for life. If I didn't have it, I don't know where I'd be."



My Family Commitment. A resurgence of interest among youth in traditional family structures will gain momentum. 90% of respondents said they think it is likely they will be married to the same person their whole life.



2. All About Me



No Body's Perfect. Body image and traditional routes to good health will be important aspects of happiness for many youth. "At my school, skinny is what everyone's trying to be," said Vanessa A., 13, of Philadelphia. "People make fun of fat (but) also of the skin-and-bones look."



Money Matters. Money is increasingly seen by youth as a means rather than an end. Relative wealth and status are more important than absolute. 73% said the kind of stuff they have makes them happy. 69% said they want to be rich -- but 51% said it is not at all likely or not too likely that they will actually be rich.



Almost Famous. Youth, especially younger people, fantasize about fame, but are savvy enough to know it is unlikely, and most will settle for a good career. "I want to be famous or a skater or a basketball player, but I don't think it will happen," said Nik O., 12, of Phoenix. Zachary G., 13, of Philadelphia said: "In the future, I want more peace and just a better life… a good job, and to take care of the kids."



3. My Life, My Time, My Way



Take Control. Youth will take control of their own happiness. 91% said they have goals for the future (81% have career/work goals, 64% education, 62% family, 63% money, 48% travel, 17% sports, while 12% hope for fame).



No Challenge Too Extreme. Youth see few obstacles in their pursuit of happiness that they cannot overcome. Concern for the future causes stress for only 20% of the 13-17 year olds polled, but 40% of those 18-24 years old feel concern.



Unplugged Meltdown. Technology will stress youth… only when it's unavailable. "I'd be stressed if I didn't have a cell phone," said Cole M., 15, of Atlanta.



Uniquely Generic. Growing youth individuality and self-expression will be tempered by the need to fit in, rather than rebel. 83% said they'd rather be their own person than fit in with their peers. Two-thirds of those surveyed said they are happier in a group. We sensed a rebellious streak, but it was clearly not too far outside of peer group or family norms.



4. Virtual Community



Tech Me. Technology will be important for staying in touch as well as for the pleasure of the moment. 37% of the youths polled said they play videogames to stop unhappiness. 61% said technology helps them make new friends. In the 24 hours before the survey, half of the respondents said, they sent a text message; 71% said they received one.



Virtual & F2F. Youth will make little distinction between face-to-face and virtual friendships. They will have many friends they may never meet in person. 62% of youths polled have used social networking sites like MySpace and FaceBook; 53% have created their own profiles on such sites; 33% said they have friends online they've never met in person.



The bottom line: In the end, the research showed that it is a popular misconception that today's youths are self-absorbed or indifferent to social issues, explains Social Technologies' Traci Stafford Croft, who traveled to three cities (Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Atlanta) with MTV's staff to interview about five dozen 12-24 year olds. The Associated Press then surveyed another 1,280 youths to flesh out the initial findings.



"Any apparent indifference might reflect the fact that they have a good grasp on reality and are simply being practical about what they get upset about or involved in," Croft says.



Hines concludes: "This generation is not likely to march in DC to protest the war in Iraq. But they do care about the country, the environment, and the planet. They are just showing it in a way that is different from their parents and grandparents."
