Skin can be classified into seven general types - combination/normal, dry, sensitive, oily, mature, couperose and acneic. A simple test at home can be used to determine skin type. Dry: Dry skin is characterized by fine wrinkles, flakiness, red patches, dullness and a papery texture. To quench the skin's thirst, its important to use creamy cleansers and thick moisturizers to boost moisture content. Cleanse the face with alcohol-free cleansers, toners or milks, which will remove makeup and impurities while infusing moisture into dry skin. Because dry skin is easily irritated, reduce time in the shower, and don't rub the face while drying. Instead, pat gently with a towel to avoid chafing.

Sensitive: People with skin that is prone to irritation and broken capillaries, itching, flakiness and blemishes require particular care. Those with sensitive skin are unable to use certain cosmetics and shouldn't apply chemical-based products. Instead, go for hypoallergenic skincare lines free of alcohol, emulsifiers and fragrances. As with all skin types, cleansing is an important part of your routine, but finding a suitable, gentle product can be difficult, so read the labels carefully and watch for reactions that could occur within the first few days of using a new product.

Oily: Signs of oily skin include enlarged pores, blackheads and blemishes, an oily T-zone, makeup that wears off within a few hours. While it may be tempting to over-wash the face, dermatologists say that's a big mistake. As with any skin type, over-washing can strip the skin of its natural oils, so wash no more than twice a day with a cleanser designed to eliminate excess oils and lipids that block pores and create aggravating blemishes. Another mistake many make is thinking a moisturizer will only add to their oily skin worries. Its important to use a light, oil-free moisturizer to leave skin feeling hydrated without greasy residue.

Mature: With age, skin loses elasticity and firmness, appears looser and thinner and acquires a dry, wrinkled texture. But it's never too early to begin an anti-aging skincare routine with a refreshing cleanser, night reform treatment and perfecting night cream to cleanse, moisturize, repair and hydrate mature skin. Take special care of the delicate eye area with a cream that reduces the appearance of dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles.

Couperose: Couperose skin is distinguished by chronic redness and caused by weak, dilated capillary vessels. Spicy foods, alcohol, cigarettes, sunlight and anything that causes blood to rush to the face are all factors that contribute to couperose skin. People with this type of skin should avoid washing the face with extreme hot or cold water and choose products designed to strengthen capillary walls. Shun harsh exfoliants, products with hydroquinone and topical acne treatments with benzyl peroxide. Instead, use soothing creams to diffuse blotchiness and calm redness.

Acneic: Perhaps the most frustrating of all skin types, acenic skin (or acne-prone skin) suffers from an oily surface, obstructed pores, blackheads and unsightly pimples that can later result in scars. People with acne often mistakenly use harsh chemical cleansers, which result in dehydration and even more acne. The secrets to clear skin include normalizing or balancing products. Acne sufferers should use a topical exfoliant with benzoyl peroxide after cleansing, and then apply a mild toner to purify pores.

Diabetes is getting to be a worldwide concern that early detection is now being proposed by many health practitioners and researchers. Experts believe that earlier diagnosis and treatment can prevent or delay the costly complications of diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. This means that the body is having a hard time converting sugar, starch and other food taken into energy that is needed by our body. Currently, an estimated 100 million people are affected worldwide, and about 5% of the population in the United States has diabetes.

Among those who have diabetes, the most prevalent are those with Type 2 condition. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes, and is sometimes called "adult-onset" diabetes. It is usually detected on individuals age 45 and above.

In Type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin takes the sugar from the cells. When the sugar remains in the blood, it can cause high blood glucose levels that will later affect your eyesight, kidneys, nerves or heart.

However, the increase in the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is becoming a health concern for many health practitioners. In fact, Type 2 diabetes is now being identified in young adults. Studies have shown that there is a dramatic increase over the past decades due to many factors, which include more sedentary lifestyles and increasing obesity. And some predict that this numbers will double within the next 20 years.

According to a study conducted by researchers from the US government, screening for Type 2 diabetes should begin at age 25 to slow the development of complications. The complications include blindness, kidney disease, and amputations.

As opposed to the current routine of screening for diabetes at the age of 45 among the general population, the study by the US Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta found that early screening reduced both lifetime healthcare costs and death caused by diseases associated with diabetes. They further showed that when detected at an early age, early treatment can greatly increase the postponement of complications, as well as improve the quality of life of the diabetics.

The study indicated that there is a decrease in lifetime costs of at least $1275 per patient when the patients are screened between the ages of 25 and 34. This was a result from the process made by the researchers comparing the growth of costs from screening among people aged 25 years or older with the savings made as a result of early detection and intervention.

Similarly, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDKK) also recommend that people under age 45 should already be tested especially if they are at high risk. These high risk factors include:

•Being more than 20% above the ideal body weight or having a body mass index of greater than or equal to 27;

•Having a mother, father, brother, or sister with diabetes;

•Being African, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic American, or Pacific Islander American;

•Giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds or having diabetes during pregnancy;

•Having blood pressure at or above 140/90 millimeters of mercury (mmHg); and

•Having abnormal glucose tolerance when previously tested for diabetes.

Diabetes happens when there is poor management by the body of the insulin. Symptoms include excessive thirst and urination, blurred vision, tingling in the fingers and toes, unusual fatigue and dizziness. When symptoms occur, it's time for you to get your sugar levels screened by your doctor. Early prevention is the key to a healthier life.

Achieve Your Goals: Those who kept gratitude lists were closer to attaining their personal goals after a two-month period than those who did not. Stress Relief: Being grateful is also an effective way to release stress, according to Emmons. "Gratitude research is beginning to suggest that feelings of thankfulness have tremendous positive value in helping people cope with daily problems, especially stress," he said in a WebMD article. Greater Sense of Wellbeing and Positive Emotions: People who are grateful report higher levels of positive emotions, vitality and life satisfaction, and lower levels of depression and stress. Helps You Cope With Illness: Among people with a neuromuscular disease, Emmons found that a "21-day gratitude intervention" produced more "high-energy positive moods, a greater sense of feeling connected to others, more optimistic ratings of one's life, and better sleep duration and sleep quality, relative to a control group."

BellBrook Labs announced the publication of studies on an enabling new approach for studying tumor cell invasion entitled “An Automated High-Content Assay for Tumor Cell Migration through 3-Dimensional Matrices,” in the October volume of Journal of Biomolecular Screening (JBS). In the paper, Dr. Steven Hayes, Victoria Echeverria and their colleagues at BellBrook describe how the company’s iuvo™ Microconduit Array platform was used to overcome the limitations of current methods to enable development of an information-rich, 3D tumor cell invasion assay using automated high content analysis.

Metastasis is the predominant cause of death from cancer, and tumor cell migration is a key element in the metastatic process. Understanding how tumor cells invade other tissues and developing new drugs that block the process are fundamental challenges in cancer research. However, modeling tumor cell invasion the way it occurs in the body – three dimensional movement of cells through ECM (Extracellular Matrix) - has proven difficult, especially in an automated, high throughput format, largely because culturing and imaging cells in ECM in traditional mulitwell plates is problematic. As described in the JBS paper, the BellBrook team was able to circumvent these difficulties by performing invasion assays in submicroliter channels in their recently developed iuvo Microchannel 5250 plates. Metastatic prostate cells were added to the liquid media compartment and allowed to migrate into the collagen-filled microchannels and automated microscopy was used to image the ultrathin assay compartments, generating quantitative data on the number of cells invading the matrix and distance traveled as well as effects on cell proliferation. The study showed that that cell movement through ECM in the microchannels was truly 3-dimensional, and therefore, representative of the in vivo invasion process. In addition, quantitative potency measurements were obtained for known inhibitors of cell migration, as well as information on the effect of the inhibitors on cell health, demonstrating the utility of the assay for anti-cancer drug discovery. By using this newly-developed assay in their 3D ECM Invasion Assay Service, BellBrook can provide researchers with valuable information on how effectively and specifically their potential drug molecules target the invasion process.

"We have tried to remain on the leading edge of our industry,” Deb Sullivan continues, “And aPaws will help guarantee we do”. “Most dog owners usually don’t even think about the impact dog waste can have on them in regards to health issues,” adds Deb Sullivan. “Dog waste can host deadly parasites and viruses, some of which can infect humans, especially children.

Roughly 10,000 people are infected with Toxocariasis each year in the United States. This disease can cause blindness as well as affect the bodyÂ’s organs and central nervous system. To help prevent human infection, the U. S. Center for Disease Control recommends clean up of pet waste at least once a week.

Kendall Ciesemier Goes to Africa in June to See the Benefits of Her Organization and Movement, Kids Caring 4 Kids.

Kendall Ciesemier has been waiting for this day for over five years. When she founded Kids Caring 4 Kids (KC4K, http://www. KidsCaring4Kids. org (http://www. kidscaring4kids. org)) in 2004, she had no idea the impact it would have on kids worlds apart. Despite personal struggles of her own, she has remained focused on the greater challenges of children around the world, many who have lost their parents to AIDS and are orphans. For the first time this June the 17-year old will see firsthand the benefits of her dedication and commitment, and those she’s inspired, to African children who need it the most.

Over five years ago, 11-year old Kendall Ciesemier was stunned by an “Oprah Christmas Special” where she saw young girls her own age caring for their younger siblings following the deaths of their parents to AIDS. She was so deeply moved by their plight that she took $360 of her own money to sponsor one child for a year through World Vision. Knowing that other kids would be equally shocked and moved, Ciesemier created Kids Caring 4 Kids, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging America’s young people to make a difference to help AIDS orphans.

Ciesemier, herself, knows what it’s like to face challenging circumstances. Born with a rare liver disease, she has undergone two liver transplants, and still, even now, most days are not easy for her. It's really her devotion to the children of Africa that helps her keep perspective during many, regular hospital visits.

“Watching Oprah, I saw children my age doing laundry, walking miles to go to school and get fresh water, cooking and caring for their young siblings. I have loving parents to care for me, but these kids in Africa who lost their parents have no one,” said Ciesemier, Founder of Kids Caring 4 Kids. “Kids are pretty powerful in numbers. Now I get to see for myself how KC4K, and the kids in America, are making a real difference.”

This June Ciesemier finally heads to Zambia and South Africa to see how her organization is benefiting AIDS orphans, and others, in Africa. While there she will visit the Kerus Orphan Care Center, which KC4K helped to build; a bicycle distribution location with partner World Bicycle Relief; a clean water project KC4K helped fund with World Vision; Lifesong for Orphans, a residential school, and, of course, a safari.

"The chance to go to Africa is really a dream come true for me. I didn't realize that my path with KC4K would lead me to this amazing opportunity, but I'm grateful that I've been given the opportunity to help others who really need it." Ciesemier adds that she's most excited to see how the lives of children and individuals in Africa are changed through KC4K's efforts.

With the help of an appearance on The Oprah Show along with President Clinton and many others spreading the word, KC4K is nearing its $1 Million fundraising goal. So far, KC4K funds have been used to:

 donate specially built bicycles to students in Zambia so they can attend school  provide weekly nutritional meals to over 600 orphans, widows and AIDS patients in Zambia  provide funds to help build and outfit Kerus Orphan Care Center in South Africa  supply food, shelter and education to child slaves rescued in Ghana  construct a dorm in Kenya to house 30 orphan girls  drill clean water wells in Zambia  build and help operate a Kenyan community center caring for 120 orphans daily  provide healthcare and hygiene to 175 children in a Zambian orphanage  provide uniforms and school fees for Ethiopian children

This is all pretty impressive for a teenager with her own personal daily trials. Her message to kids her age around the world is "Join a cause that is bigger than yourself. It doesn’t take a lot to make a difference in the world.”

In 2009, the organization launched its new "i care 2" kit to encourage American youth to create their own fundraisers for KC4K. The kit provides everything an individual or group needs to create and successfully implement a project to raise funds to help AIDS orphans. Each kit is sent out by request through http://www. The Story of Kids Caring 4 Kids

Founded in 2004 by then 11-year-old Kendall Ciesemier, Kids Caring 4 Kids is a registered 501(c)3 organization. The organization caught the attention of national media and landed Ciesemier on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2007, accompanied by President Bill Clinton.
