NLN and Laerdal Announce Patient Cases for SimMan 3G: Auto Mode Programming Ideal for Nursing Community

SimMan 3G's Auto Mode programming, physiological models, and patient cases that automatically control simulations are ideal for use in the nursing community. These cases are easier to use and deliver a high degree of clinical accuracy allowing individuals with varying degrees of technical knowledge to run simulations and decreasing set-up time.

Laerdal and the National League for Nursing have announced the availability of nursing cases for SimMan 3G that features Auto Mode programming and utilizes physiological models and patient cases to automatically control simulations.

These cases are ideal for use in the nursing community -- they are easier to use and they deliver a high degree of clinical accuracy. Because Nursing Patient Cases allow people with varying degrees of technical knowledge to run simulations, their time to get up and running is decreased.

"The NLN is delighted to have teamed up once again with Laerdal to bring another technological advance to the pedagogy of nursing education," said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. "This will undoubtedly raise still higher the standard of excellence in nursing education that is the mission of the NLN."

Other features of SimMan 3G is the new graphical user interface (GUI), which has an intuitive design that makes it easy for educators to operate. Educators can easily change the level of complexity of a case while it is in progress by using sliders to make the case easier or more difficult for learners. This is particularly valuable when running simulations with learners at varying levels of competency.

Julie Settles MSN, ACNP, BC, CEN, assistant clinical professor and program coordinator of the Acute Care nursing program at Indiana University, finds great value in the Auto Mode programming for her students. Said Ms. Settles, "Having the new Auto Mode programming for 3G has really decreased my anxiety about the programming side of conducting simulations." She added that the unique nature of the programming offers ease of use and boosts her confidence to run simulations. "I know that I can instantly change the vitals signs and other parameters by using the slider rather than worrying about correct programming. It is also nice that I can easily adjust the scenario based on how the student is performing. I can slow down physiological changes or speed them up as needed."

The Nursing Patient Cases contain 20 existing cases developed for use on SimMan and are mapped to the 2007 National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) test categories promoting Safe and effective care environment, Health promotion and maintenance, Psychosocial integrity, and Physiological integrity.

The National League of Nursing is dedicated to excellence in nursing, the National League for Nursing is the premier organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education offering faculty development, networking opportunities, testing services, nursing research grants, and public policy initiatives to its 30,000 individual and 1,200 institutional members.
