K-9 Club, Kansas CityÂ’s only off-leash play club for dogs, is panting but still raring to go after an exciting year of playing hard at Penn Valley Dog Park. Unique to Kansas City, K-9 Club offers three-hour dog park play groups that provide more exercise and socialization than ordinary dog walkers, and more convenience and personal attention than traditional doggie daycare.

Owner Amy Bentz matches canine clients by size, age, energy level, and temperament into compatible, consistent dog play groups. K-9 Club then provides free door-to-door transportation to and from Penn Valley Dog Park in a safety-customized van. Once at the park, the club members enjoy guided play, socialization, and reward-based reinforcement of basic commands like sit, stay, and come. K-9 Club provides plenty of toys, healthy treats, and fresh water, plus lots and lots of praise and affection. For the entire duration of the park visit, Bentz runs and plays alongside the dogs to ensure they get the most fun and exercise possible. The dogs are then cleaned up and returned home, happy and tired after their adventure.

Since last summer, the service has grown from one play group a week to fifteen, with more than twenty dogs participating up to five times a week each, and clients couldn’t be happier. “I really don't think we would have made it through puppyhood without Amy. Captain Applejack just adores her; he sits at the door waiting for her van to pull up and he gets so excited when she finally arrives that he can barely sit still long enough for me to get his leash on him. He comes home tired and happy, and all the household rejoices; as a 60 pound dog on the tail-end of puppydom, he is what you call ‘a handful,’” client Kelly Sue DeConnick said. “Possibly more important than all of that, though, is the fact that we trust Amy; we know she cares about Applejack and he is safe in her charge. That makes all the rest possible."

BentzÂ’s dedication and K-9 ClubÂ’s success have not gone unnoticed. K-9 Club officially adopted Penn Valley Dog Park in March through the Adopt-a-Park program at the request of Kansas City Parks and Recreation. Parks and Recreation officials from Independence and Roeland Park have asked Bentz to consult on plans for off-leash parks in those cities, and she is also leading Penn Valley Dog Park users in an effort to build more parking. K-9 ClubÂ’s twice-monthly volunteer park cleanups have been covered by Fox 4 News, 96.5 The Buzz, Paw Prints, and The Pitch. Additionally, K-9 Club has been profiled on Doggienews. com and in the Examiner, which ran a front page story on Bentz and the business in June. K-9 Club was featured as Kansas CityÂ’s premier pet care service provider by Dog Fancy in January 2005.

K-9 Club is licensed, bonded, and insured. Owner Amy Bentz is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR by the American Red Cross. K-9 Club is a member of Pet Sitters International and No More Homeless Pets Kansas City.
