The Camp Recovery Center to Host Educational Workshop Addressing the Neurobiology of Addiction

Many people believe that alcoholism and drug addiction are the result of a lack of willpower or some sort of moral failing. But the latest scientific research shows this is not the case.

Although the first use of a drug may be voluntary, studies show that addiction is a chronic medical disease, similar to heart disease or diabetes, which causes lasting damage to the cerebral cortex and limbic system in the brain. These neurobiological changes alter the functioning of the brain, making it extremely difficult for an addict to simply “choose” to stop using.

The Camp Recovery Center, a drug rehab center for adults and teens in Scotts Valley, Calif., approaches addiction as a chronic brain disease. Because substance abuse can result in both physical and psychological dependence, The Camp offers holistic addiction treatment that addresses each individual’s mind, body and spirit.

Using a combination of medication, individual, group and family counseling, art and recreational activities, 12-Step meetings and relapse prevention planning, patients at The Camp receive comprehensive care from a team of caring professionals who know that being addicted to drugs or alcohol isn’t a sign of a personal failing or character flaw.

The Camp is bringing attention to the root causes of addiction by exploring the latest research on neurobiology and brain function. On March 5, 2010 from 11:30 a. m. to 1:00 p. m., The Camp will host an educational workshop for clinical professionals and therapists titled “The Neurobiology of Addiction.” Leading the workshop is renowned addiction expert, Stephen Stein, MD, who has served as the medical director at The Camp Recovery Center for the past 15 years.

Attendees will learn about the ways alcohol and other drugs affect the brain and will have an opportunity to network with other addiction professionals on The Camp’s serene 25-acre campus in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

According to Dr. Stein, the more information addiction professionals have, the better equipped they will be to understand and effectively treat addiction.

“Understanding the structure and function of the brain and the basic neurochemistry behind addiction enhances the ability of therapists and other clinical professionals to recognize what’s happening with their clients and more effectively treat this disease,” said Dr. Stein.

Dr. Stein has worked in the field of addiction for more than 25 years, bringing his medical expertise to emergency rooms, private practice, county health clinics and addiction treatment centers all across Northern California. He has been certified by the American Board of Family Practice, the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and is a licensed office-based opiate treatment provider.

The Camp Recovery Center provides comprehensive detoxification, residential, outpatient and aftercare treatment programs for adults and adolescents struggling with drug or alcohol addiction. For more than 25 years, The Camp has been one of the premier substance abuse treatment programs in the country, providing a uniquely effective combination of therapy, medication management, 12-Step work, and recreational and experiential therapies to build a firm foundation in recovery.
