The Review:

This combined book and CD training tool details Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations aimed at halting the spread of disease from bloodborne pathogens. Bloodborne means "carried by the blood," and a pathogen is defined here as an organism that causes disease.

Though this work is introductory in nature, that by no means limits its scope. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Manual and CD addresses everything managers and employees in a healthcare environment need to know to establish and maintain a worker safety program that fulfills OSHA requirements and improves patient and employee safety. Other industries in which managers or directors must address infectious disease, such as schools, summer camps, athletic facilities, etc., could also benefit from studying portions of the information and procedures herein.

The most common bloodborne pathogens are the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV). Other viruses such as Hepatitis A and Hepatitis C are also, to various degrees, transmitted through body fluids, mainly blood, from someone who has the pathogen to a healthy person. The various pathogens are clearly identified and distinguished from each other and much attention is paid to exactly how healthy individuals are infected. This helps with strategizing the best and most effective ways of prevention, including mandatory protective strategies and lists of specific equipment used to shield medical personnel as they perform invasive procedures. The glossary is basic but helpful and explains the terminology used in the CD as well as specific OSHA statutes attached at end of the book.

While the information, methods, and facts provided here are of the most serious nature, the tone of the writing is less technical and more conversational, making the work quite accessible. A question and answer format included works well, enabling even the new hire or medical student to understand the basic concepts behind the OSHA requirements. This accessibility is reinforced by the CD, which includes bright graphics and video that will be especially appreciated by visual learners.
