10 Healthy Med Ways to Show Your Heart Some Love

10 Healthy Med Ways to Show Your Heart Some Love

Celebrate National Heart Month with Med Diet Tips & Recipes

Boston, MA (PRWEB) January 26, 2010

February is National Heart Month, and Oldways (http://www. oldwayspt. org) and the Mediterranean Foods Alliance (http://mediterraneanmark. org/) offer 10 ways to show your heart a little love by borrowing from the traditions of the Mediterranean region. Thousands of scientific studies (and the American Heart Association!) declare the Mediterranean Diet is one of the world's healthiest ways to eat and incorporating these foods into your everyday diet will do the heart some good.

"While it's the whole diet that makes the health difference, there are some foods, rich in healthy fats and antioxidants, that are extra beneficial for heart health," said Sara Baer-Sinnott, Executive Vice President, Oldways. "Found in the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid (http://www. oldwayspt. org/mediterranean-diet-pyramid), these foods can decrease your chance of developing heart disease, improve your overall health and, best of all, they taste great."

Here are 10 Healthy Med Foods plus a heart-healthy tip for each (well, 9 plus an important reminder to exercise!). Consumers can download a free copy (http://www. mediterraneanmark. org/documents/HeartHealthFINAL1WEB. pdf) which includes delicious and easy recipes.

1.) Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Rich in monounsaturated fats, olive oil lowers bad (LDL) cholesterol, reducing the risk of developing heart disease.

Tip: Use healthful olive oil instead of butter when sautéing or roasting vegetables.

2.) Fish: Salmon is super-rich in omega-3 fatty acids that reduce blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Nutrition scientists, the American Heart Association and Oldways suggest eating fish twice a week to benefit from its heart-healthy fats.

Tip: Grill or broil salmon and serve with a green vegetable and a squeeze of lemon juice for added flavor.

3.) Nuts: Nuts and peanuts are good sources of protein and fiber and are rich in heart-healthy omega-3s and omega-6s. They also have plenty of mono-and poly-unsaturated fats, good for reducing the risk of cardiovascular heart disease.

Tip: Sprinkle peanuts and nuts on salads, pastas, and cereals or add them to muffin batters for an extra crunch.

4.) More Herbs and Spices - Less Salt: Herbs and spices contain important phytonutrients that are essential to good health. They are a healthy substitute for salt, which can increase blood pressure.

Tip: Add an extra pinch of dried or fresh herbs or spices to soups, dressings and sauces to heighten flavor without adding salt.

5.) Whole Grains: Oatmeal is a fiber-rich super food that may help lower cholesterol and help keep arteries clear. It is also packed with omega-3 fatty acids, folate and potassium.

Tip: Start the day with a steaming bowl of healthy oatmeal, or reach for an oatmeal raisin cookie for a heart-healthy snack.

6.) Red Wine: Made from grapes containing resveratrol and other powerful, naturally-occurring plant compounds, red wine may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Moderate consumption is important - two glasses per day for men, one for women.

Tip: Enjoy a glass of red wine with your dinner tonight.

7.) Vegetables: Vegetables have essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that can help protect the body from chronic diseases. Spinach, with high levels of folate, potassium and B-complex vitamins, is a standout for heart health.

Tip: Use spinach instead of lettuce for a nutrient-packed salad or add it to sandwiches, wraps or omelets.

8.) Fruit: Fruit has important antioxidants that reduce the risk of heart disease. Blueberries are also a star fruit for heart health because they lower cholesterol and are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, folate and fiber.

Tip: Sprinkle fresh blueberries on cereal and salads or add frozen blueberries to a morning smoothie.

9.) Small Amounts of Meat: Meat can be high in cholesterol and saturated fat, and if eaten frequently, can cause fatty substances to build up inside artery walls.

Tip: At dinner, make meat a side feature and not the main event.

10.) Friends, Family and Exercise: For overall good health including heart health, make exercise a regular part of the day, just like brushing teeth or checking email.

Tip: Meet up with a friend or family member and try to walk for 30 minutes, three days a week.

Chemical Suicide: Why You Should Switch To Natural Cleaning Products Now

Chemical Suicide: Why You Should Switch To Natural Cleaning Products Now

Do you realise the negative effect some cleaning products can have on your health? The disturbing truth about the common household cleaners and what you can do to lead a healthier life.

(PRWEB) August 10, 2005

Did You Know?

• More than 7 million accidental poisonings occur each year, with more than 75% involving children under age 6! (Source: The Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons)

• The federal Environmental Protection Agency (E. P.A.) has found that airborne chemical levels in homes were as much as seventy (70) times higher inside than outside.

Scare-mongering this is not. When I first heard these facts I was simply appalled and bewildered that we allow ourselves to live like this. In an age where conditions such as asthma and cancer are so commonplace, how come we do not look straight towards the cause and eradicate it?

For a long time I was of the view that cleaning products have enriched our lives and bought a higher standard of living and a longer average lifespan; true to an extent.

Soap is one of the most significant inventions the human race has ever dreamed up. It has brought cleanliness into our lives and has helped to reduce the spread of common diseases across much of the world.

But we did not stop at soap. The US market for household cleaning products was worth US$14.3 billion in 2003. As this lucrative market becomes saturated, companies resort to new, more effective cleaners, containing an increasing number of toxic chemicals, to steal market share from rivals. But at what cost to us?

• Of the 17,000 chemicals that appear in common household products, only 30% have been adequately tested for the negative effects on our health. (Source: "Neighbourhood Network's" 2002 Environmental Resource Directory for Home and Business)

• According to a National Academy of Sciences workshop, approximately 15 percent of the American population suffer from chemical sensitivity. Researchers have traced this increased sensitivity to the proliferation of synthetic chemicals in consumer products and furnishings.

The more of these facts I came across, the more I started to look for an alternative, and so I stumbled across natural cleaning products that are both safe for you to use and environmentally friendly.

These products contain no dyes, artificial fragrances or pesticide residues. They use only citrus-based oils as well as ingredients from corn and other replenish able materials.

Q&A:

But do they clean as well as the chemical based products?

Well, you will be amazed at what Mother Nature has provided us with. These cleaners can compare to the leading brands when it comes to fighting grime and will leave you and your family feeling and looking a lot healthier. These products are now more widespread than ever in the workplace and it is about time that we started to use them in our own homes as this is where we spend the majority of our time.

But arenÂ’t these products more expensive?

The prices are not a great deal more than what you would pay for regular products and with competition in the sector increasing, it should not be long before we see prices dropping. But who can really put a price on good health?

They sound great but where can I get these products?

You can buy them right now from stores across the country, but why not get them delivered direct to your front door by visiting the website below where you can get great deals with maximum convenience to you.

Using these products will significantly reduce indoor air pollution and this will help you and your family lead healthier lives.

So letÂ’s raise a glass and make a toast to your health! Cheers!

Video production company in Denver -- Remember When(tm) -- was featured in the September 26, 2003, Rocky Mountain News Business Section

Matt King and Fern Bray, owners of Denver's Remember When(tm), were interviewed and pictured in the September 26, 2003, Rocky Mountain News article entitled "Remembrances: Using videos and DVDs, company creates a lasting memory and helps families work through their grief while preserving a piece of history." The article was written by Nora Caley, reporter, as a Special To The News.

(PRWEB) October 5, 2003 -

Fern Bray and Matt King of Remember When(tm) were highlighted for a second time in one of Denver's mass circulation daily newspapers for their unique, family-focused video production business - 09/26/03 Rocky Mountain News, business section, page 4B

The first time they were featured similarly was December 23, 2001, Sunday Denver Post, in an article entitled: "Summing up a life: Local companies record memories for posterity," written by William Porter, Denver Post staff writer.

For the past three years, Fern Bray and Matt King of Remember When(tm) have been skillfully documenting local lives from their production studio in suburban Denver. They provide film production focused on families.

"Matt and Fern do an absolutely wonderful job of helping their clients open up on tape, plus they are very sensitive and caring as they draw out special memories and discuss delicate feelings. And, therein is the art involved in this valuable process," explains Maggie Chamberlin Holben, a Denver native who has twice used Remember When(tm) for projects documenting her elderly parents' lives.

"In 2002, I turned to Fern and Matt to create photo montages for Mother's Day and Father's Day tributes for my parents, Elmer and Helen Roth who reside at the Lakewood Meridian. I recorded comments over video of several hundred photos I'd gathered and taken to Remember When(tm), telling Mom and Dad just how much I care about and love them. Just recently, Matt and Fern did videotaped interviews with both Mom and Dad, in Mom's apartment at the Meridian. There's even steady cam footage of me bringing Dad by wheelchair from the Health Center to the apartment, which is just priceless.

"My Dad is very ill right now and fortunately I had the motivation, I believe just in time, to preserve all his wonderful stories on video, plus his singing, which I enjoy so much. My Mom was fabulous and very articulate in sharing her memories as Fern questioned her in depth. Both Mom and Dad recorded special messages to me, which I will view often and treasure for many years to come," Holben says.

Subjects for Remember When(tm) productions tend to be in their 70s and 80s, an interview demographic familiar to anyone who has watched Tom Brokaw's coverage of the World War II generation. As in Holben's case, it dawns on children and grandchildren that their elders have interesting stories to tell, tales worth hearing and remembering fondly in the years ahead.

King brings extensive experience in the film production business to Remember When(tm). He has worked as a production technician for Disney and other Hollywood concerns, plus has been involved in numerous film and production projects in the Denver area during his filmmaking career. Bray, described by a local newspaper reporter as "a homegrown Barbara Walters," is the interviewer. She guides clients through a list of more than 150 questions designed to jog the memory and get across just who the person really is. Most often taping is done right in the client's home.

Both King and Bray had a personal calling to their unique and special video production business.

King was holding his own Dad's hand when he died of pneumonia a number of years back. Whereas King only had the sound of his Dad's voice left on an answering machine tape and the mere memory of his father's wonderful laugh, King is now making sure others have more and better options for preserving special family memories.

Bray's motivation came from her own daughter asking questions about Granddad. "My daughter said she didn't know anything about my father, and I told her it was time she learned," Bray explains.

"Good camera work is critical, but a production's ultimate success depends on the interviewer's ability to truly engage a subject. That's where Matt and Fern's unique combination of talents qualify them to help local families turn special life stories into personal videotaped treasures," Holben concludes.

According to the stated mission: "Remember When(tm) is dedicated to the telling and preservation of all peoples history for our loved ones, and future generations." Projects focus on video autobiographies and memoirs, special birthday and anniversary celebrations, family reunions and weddings, funeral services and family gatherings, memorial tributes, pet memories, photo montages and life tributes. DVD authoring and 8 mm transfer are also included in the services offered.

Remember When(tm) documentaries cost from $500 to $10,000, depending on the number of family interviews performed. Average cost is $3,500. Everyone's situation is different and complimentary consultations are offered for interested families who want to learn more about Remember When(tm) services.

"This is such a giving thing," King said in a newspaper interview two years ago. "Ultimately, we're just trying to help honor a human being's stay on the planet."

Alternative Fuel School Buses Give Florida School District a Real Return On Their Investment

Alternative Fuel School Buses Give Florida School District a Real Return On Their Investment

Indian River District Schools' purchase of Propane-Powered Blue Bird Vision school buses allows the Transportation Department to bring savings back to the district.

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) October 28, 2010

Indian River District Schools received a $30,000 check in conjunction with their pursuit of alternative fuel school buses at their October 26th School Board Meeting. In the summer of 2009, Indian River received Propane-Powered Vision school buses from Blue Bird and Florida Transportation Systems, Inc. These alternative fuel buses have been running routes for almost a year now and the district is seeing significant results to their commitment of going green.

The $30,000 check reflects a tax credit that was passed from the seller of the vehicles, Florida Transportation Systems, back to the end user. The Propane-Powered Vision school bus is recognized by the IRS as a qualified alternative motor vehicle and allows for a tax credit based on the conversion costs. These quiet operating buses have seen extensive use over the last year and have operated exceptionally in their duties. One of the concerns with making a switch from diesel to alternative fuel was the potential of additional maintenance concerns. So far, the Transportation Department has seen much greater "up time" with these buses versus the other diesel units in the fleet. From a cost per mile standpoint, these buses will continue to produce real savings throughout their service to the district.

The Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision utilizes a General Motors 8.1L gasoline engine that has been converted using CleanFUEL USA's Liquid Propane Injection System (LPI). These buses have seen outstanding success in several states including Texas, California and New York in addition to national contractors. The buses are helping reduce dependency on foreign produced petroleum and replacing it with a domestically produced fuel that is substantially cheaper at the pump. From an environmental standpoint, propane fueled vehicles produce significantly lower particulate, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, hydrocarbon and greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline or diesel engines - cutting some toxins and carcinogens up to 96% compared to gasoline.

Unlike "retrofit" systems of the past, this is a fully integrated and purpose-built Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) bus, engineered to the same exacting standards as other Blue Bird buses. Manufactured in Fort Valley, Georgia, the bus is delivered directly to the dealership with no additional aftermarket components needed. The Propane-Powered Vision meets Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification requirements for the 2010 production year. Designed and built for maximum quality and reliability, the unit meets all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Other Florida school districts also have an opportunity to jump on the alternative fuel bandwagon. Through their Department of Education's contract for school buses, the Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision is often less expensive than the other manufacturer's standard diesel offerings. The economic entry price, combined with the lower fuel costs and environmental advantages, positions more school districts in the state to take advantage of alternative fuel school buses.

By making the change to Propane-Powered school buses, Indian River District Schools has already seen a healthy return on their investment.

New Survey Findings Reveal Emotional and Physical Toll of Rheumatoid Arthritis and the Advancement of Treatment through "Generations"

New Survey Findings Reveal Emotional and Physical Toll of Rheumatoid Arthritis and the Advancement of Treatment through "Generations"

Survey Results Capture Perspectives of People Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Physicians Treating the Condition over a Span of 30 Years

Horsham, PA (Vocus) July 15, 2008

Emotional and physical limitations are significant challenges cited by people diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to the results released today from two new, groundbreaking parallel surveys. According to the GeneRAtions™ surveys - one of which includes feedback from more than 1,000 people living with RA and a second that polled more than 300 physicians specializing in the treatment of RA - people with RA felt sad or depressed because of their disease an average of 25 days in three months and had difficulty with normal daily activities for 31 days in the same time period.(1) The surveys form the basis of a new disease awareness initiative, GeneRAtions, which is focused on increasing understanding of RA through the perspectives of varying "RA generations" - people who have lived with or physicians who have treated RA for different lengths of time over a 30-year span.

"It's difficult to explain to people, even as a former Olympic athlete, why I sometimes struggle because of my RA. Many people don't understand how great the mental and physical challenges can be when living with this condition," said Joy Fawcett, Olympic gold medalist and retired member of the U. S. Women's Soccer Team, who has been living with RA for more than a decade, and is a spokesperson for the GeneRAtions program, developed by Centocor, Inc. "I'm fortunate that in the 10 years since my diagnosis, education and treatment for the disease have improved, but we need to continue this momentum."

The GeneRAtions surveys, conducted by Manhattan Research and supported by Centocor, Inc., are the first to provide new insights into the physical, emotional and social effects - including the impact of RA on relationships, work, and overall daily living - of a debilitating disease that affects 1.3 million Americans. The survey results also highlight changes in physicians' approaches to treating RA over the past 30 years, the progress that has been made in managing the disease, particularly because of important treatment advances in the past decade, as well as patient and physician perspectives about the future of treatment. Key findings revealed that:

More than 90 percent of people with RA surveyed reported that their disease interfered with their work in the last three months, illustrating how RA can impede many facets of people's lives. (2)  Physicians surveyed rated limitations on physical activities as the most restrictive consequence of RA for their patients. (3)  More than half of patients surveyed agreed that the public does not understand the difference between RA, a chronic autoimmune disorder, and osteoarthritis, which results from wear and tear on the joints. (4)  Two out of three of all patients surveyed believed that friends and family underestimate the impact of RA. More than half of all respondents felt that their doctors do not fully understand the impact of RA on their patients.(5, 6)   While nearly three out of five RA patients are satisfied with their physician's ability to effectively treat their RA with current therapies, more than 80 percent are looking forward to the future for new innovative options. (7, 8)

Comprehensive survey findings, as well as testimonials from people living with RA and physicians sharing their own personal experiences related to the disease, are available on the program website, www. RAGeneRAtions. com.

"The specialty of rheumatology has made tremendous strides over the last 30 years when my father, also a rheumatologist, was practicing and aspirin was the standard treatment.

Today the standard treatment for people living with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis includes disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologic therapies that inhibit specific proteins like tumor necrosis factor (TNF)," said Hayes Wilson, MD, Chief of

Rheumatology, Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia. "Initiatives like GeneRAtions will bring awareness to this serious illness which can affect entire families; and in turn, may give rheumatologists the opportunity to prevent the debilitating effects of RA."

"Findings from the GeneRAtions surveys provide interesting perspectives relative to both patient and physician insights," said Seth D. Ginsberg, Co-Founder and President, CreakyJoints, an arthritis advocacy group. "We are pleased to note the progress made so far in education and treatment and will continue our efforts to increase awareness of RA and improve patients' quality of life."

About the GeneRations Surveys

The GeneRAtions surveys, completed in the first half of 2008, were fielded via one-time online inquiries of 1,050 RA patients and 307 practicing rheumatologists and primary care physicians specializing in the care of patients with RA. The population was wholly examined and further sub-segmented by the length of time RA patients had been diagnosed or time that physicians had been practicing. Specific subsets consisted of individuals living with RA or a physician practicing for 10 years or less, 11-20 years, and 21 years or more. Each of the survey's generational breakouts revealed the differences or similarities in experiences that people living with RA can have depending on the amount of time living with the disease since diagnosis or the amount of time a physician has been practicing and caring for patients with RA.

About Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and debilitating disease that affects approximately 1.3 million people in the United States. Signs and symptoms of RA include pain, stiffness and motion restriction in multiple joints. Because RA is a progressive disease, it can cause permanent joint deformity and severe disability if not diagnosed early or if initial treatment is delayed. RA can occur at any age, but is most common in adults 30-50 years old and is two-to-three times more prevalent in women than in men. The cause of RA is unknown, although genetic factors may contribute to the disease.

Following Body Wisdom: a Natural Pathway on the Road to Health

Following Body Wisdom: a Natural Pathway on the Road to Health

Your body is wise. Your body knows when it is sick. It knows what it needs to heal itself. And it knows that modern drugs, modern surgery and modern technology are sometimes not enough.

(PRWEB) December 17, 2009

Welcome, then, to a newly released publication entitled Following Body Wisdom: How Energy Medicine Can Help Heal. It's written by Atherton Drenth, a long-established Canadian holistic energy therapist with a practice based in the heart of southern Ontario.

Drenth makes this very clear at the outset: She does not suggest that her healing service is a replacement for conventional medicine and traditional medical treatment; rather, she views it as a complementary, supplementary offering, a natural way to tap into the resources of the mind and body to create a positive energy and life-force that has the power to assist in the healing process as it guides people on their healing journey. The goal? A return to health, a return to a sense of physical, emotional and spiritual wellness and life-balance.

Over the course of its 184 pages, Body Wisdom takes readers on a journey of discovery, offering fresh insights into the process of healing while demonstrating how simple, natural sensitivity, plus a measure of introspection and self-exploration, can lead to heightened self-discovery. Particularly illuminating - and particularly heart-warming - are the chapters devoted to the stories of individuals who have been returned to health through the assistance of energy medicine.

Dr. Bruce Walton, a long-time friend and associate of the author, has this to say: "Following Body Wisdom is a very accessible book for anyone interested in taking control of their health. . . Atherton is a gifted healer and her efforts to bring her experiences to print will serve to enhance the lives of countless people."

The author Atherton Drenth offers this candid appraisal of the healing pathway of energy medicine: "As we undergo the journey, we begin to know ourselves, feel ourselves, and understand ourselves, fully and completely. . . (but) the journey of coming into your own power is not easy, nor is it comfortable. Energy medicine is not for the faint of heart. However, when we give ourselves permission to undertake this journey, we enter into a process of discovery and understanding. By doing so, we lovingly give ourselves permission to change."

That's what makes Following Body Wisdom such a valuable resource. It's challenging, insightful and provocative - a book that will be welcomed by readers in search of a new road on their personal journey back to health.

The Inland Empire Comes Together to Raise Funds for Providing Free Legal Assistance to the Low Income Population

The Inland Empire Comes Together to Raise Funds for Providing Free Legal Assistance to the Low Income Population

The 1st Annual Benefit Jam will feature performances by La Internacional Sonora Show and Tierra, as well as the comedy of Honest John, Greg Wilson, Willie Barcena and Eric Blake.

Riverside, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2006

The Riverside/San Bernardino Inland Counties Legal Services (ICLS) and the Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Association (IELLA) join forces with Pochteca Media to bring you the 1st Annual Benefit Jam on November 19, 2006. To be held at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium, the show will help raise funds for these non-profit organizations to continue providing free legal services to low income persons in the Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

The Benefit Jam will feature performances by well-known musicians, La Internacional Sonora Show and Tierra, as well as comedians Honest John, Greg Wilson, Willie Barcena and Eric Blake, who will also be the host of the night’s festivities.

According to the 2004 American Community Survey conducted by the U. S. Census Bureau, 14.2% of the population in Riverside County is below poverty level and in San Bernardino County the amount is 14.7% of the population. These organizations are in business to help those in this category make use of their rights to legal services.

The mission of ICLS states, “Pursuing justice and equality for low income people through advocacy and community education, treating all with dignity and respect.” The attorneys and volunteers believe this and take action to make it happen. They provide various services to these low income people across the Inland Empire focusing on these primary law practice areas: landlord/tenant, family law, public benefits, consumer, elder law, education, and health. Through their free legal aid clinics, held in both English and Spanish, senior outreach efforts, and court assistance actions, they make many people more comfortable with situations they would not have been able to resolve otherwise.

The Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Association does this as well via legal aid services. They help individuals with family law, housing, consumer issues, free consultations, and preparing documents. With the help of these non-profit organizations, low-income individuals of these counties can be assured that their rights will be met.

The Benefit Jam will begin at 7 p. m. at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium located at 3485 Mission Inn Avenue in Riverside, CA. Tickets are now on sale for $35 and can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www. ticketmaster. com, or by phone at (714) 740-2000 or (213) 480-3232. Free Ask a Doctor Online Services Can Save Lives with Both Expert and Novice Input

Free Ask a Doctor Online Services Can Save Lives with Both Expert and Novice Input

Consumers are not just looking to doctors for health information online. A new poll of over 4,800 health consumers from eHealthForum. com reveals that consumers value BOTH doctor and patient sources. In fact, website visitors prefer to rely on patient-only or patient-doctor opinion 63% of the time. Ask a Doctor programs must integrate both perspectives to gain critical audience trust in order to provide effective, timely and potentially life-saving services.

Coral Springs, FL (PRWEB) June 16, 2009

The latest poll results from eHealth Forum, a worldwide leader of Health 2.0 websites for medical questions (http://ehealthforum. com), shows that people are clearly taking a dual approach to dealing with their medical and health issues.

The poll revealed that, out of 4,889 respondents, more than half prefer to consult with both a doctor and other patients about health conditions. Although medical experts or specialists remain a trusted source of information (more than one third of respondents prefer doctor-only input), patients prefer not to rely on doctor-only opinions 63% of the time. In fact, consulting other patients experiencing similar health issues seems highly important for people learning about medical conditions.

58% would rather consult BOTH a medical expert and other patients  37% would rather consult ONLY a medical expert or specialist   5% would rather consult ONLY other patients experiencing similar issues

Collaborative health information can save a life

The internet is leading the patient-centered healthcare movement across the nation. Health 2.0 websites open two-way discussions about health conditions, and doctors can increasingly dialogue with this growing audience in new, meaningful ways.

Ask a Doctor services, like those at eHealth Forum, help bridge the information gap between doctors and patients while highlighting the importance of peer patient support.

"Online social health networks are increasingly informing patients on where, when and how to seek help when needed, a service that is made even more credible when backed by practicing physicians," said Lee Weber, community director at eHealth Forum. "In times of medical urgency, reliable and fast answers from peer groups can prevent further medical problems or even save a life."

Recent quote from eHealth Forum's Ask a Doctor forums

"This condition was killing me slowly...I now have a scope for this problem and more information for the best treatment. I couldn't have done it without the help and expertise of Dr. Nikola. He gave me the courage and knowledge to help me talk to my doctors and know what to ask for and help me understand if treatment might be necessary."

More case studies of real people using Ask a Doctor (http://ehealthforum. com/press/2009/06/15/case-studies-ask-a-doctor-services-can-save-lives/) and how it has saved lives

Featured experts in eHealth Forum's Ask a Doctor section include: Dr. Jeff Bailey, Dr. Leonard Grossman, Dr. Antonio Marotta D. C. and Dr. Robert Wascher

About the poll: The medical questions survey was implemented to identify who health consumers would rather consult for health information. The survey was conducted in the US, UK and Canada between April 3 - 21, 2009. 4889 respondents took part. Survey results are unbiased and collected anonymously from visitors to eHealthForum. com.

As The Yankees Prepare for Opening Day, Men's Vogue Reflects on How Alex Rodriguez Earned Back His Fans, Teammates and the Press

As The Yankees Prepare for Opening Day, Men's Vogue Reflects on How Alex Rodriguez Earned Back His Fans, Teammates and the Press

Men's Vogue writer, Seth Mnookin, corresponds with Alex Rodriguez for the April issue of Men's Vogue.

(PRWEB) March 28, 2008

After criticism from his fans (who have questioned his toughness and authenticity), the press (well-documented insecurities), and a lukewarm reception from his Yankees teammates (his strained relationship with former bosom buddy and captain Derek Jeter), Alex Rodriguez may finally be getting a break. The guy who prefers Art Basel, Frank Sinatra, and straitlaced heroes to the rowdy lifestyle of many famous athletes has seen arguably the best season of his career, come clean about the "change in relationship" with Jeter, and initiated a record $275-million deal on his own. Men's Vogue writer, Seth Mnookin, corresponds with the All-Star for the April issue of Men's Vogue (http://www. mensvogue. com/health/feature/articles/2008/04/arod):

On what happened that October night when it looked like he was leaving the Yankees for good:

"I was at home with my wife eating dinner and all of a sudden it came on television. When my wife talks about that day, she says I looked like a ghost...I'm glad that time is behind me."

After that World Series announcement, where A-Rod's agent fed the press without his knowledge, Rodriguez apparently put the brakes on his relationship with Scott Boras:

"I have the experience now to know what feels right and the conviction to raise my hand when something doesn't."

His role in making his $275 million-deal happen with the Yankees without Boras, instead of testing the waters of free agency, was seen by fans, his teammates and the press as emblematic of the fact that returning to the Yankees -- and winning the championship that has eluded him -- was now more

Important than getting top dollar. Now he will face the world as his own man:

"When you start out in sports, there are so many different mentors and different people pulling you in all directions. You finally get to a point where you say, 'Thank you, but I can make my own decisions.' My voice is finally being heard. And that is liberating."

The April issue of Men’s Vogue is available on newsstands now. For More on A-Rod, his daily off-season workout regimen (http://www. mensvogue. com/health/articles/2008/04/arodworkout) and expanded coverage of the issue, please visit www. mensvogue. com].

Launch of New Website Addressing Single Women’s Social, Finance, Health, Fitness, Fashion and Vacation Topics

Launch of New Website Addressing Single Women’s Social, Finance, Health, Fitness, Fashion and Vacation Topics

www. singlemindedwomen. com an online community for single women in the 25-54 demographic

Paradise Valley, AZ (PRWEB) February 20, 2008

Allison O’Connor and Christine Whelan, co-founders, today announced the launch of SingleMindedWomen. com, the premier online community for single women in the 25-54 year old demographic. Single women represent a growing and powerful market segment that is currently being underserved and overlooked by most media outlets. According to a May, 2006 press release from the US Census Bureau (http://www. census. gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/families_households/006840.html), 54% of all unmarried and single Americans are women.

Most media outlets (including magazines and websites) tend to “lump” single women into one demographic — yet their information needs are very different. Not surprisingly, the concept for SingleMindedWomen. com was borne of personal experience on the part of both O’Connor and Whelan who realized there was an immediate need for content specifically developed for this underserved market. The focus of SingleMindedWomen. com is to provide relevant articles, reviews, tutorials and Q&A’s that inform and encourage communication within this focused community. “Our mission is to provide a trusted community where single women can come together to share their views on the everyday challenges they face as they navigate the world solo,” says O’Connor.

Offering practical advice, SingleMindedWomen. com contains vital information every single woman can use to enhance her lifestyle. Whether single by choice or circumstance, women ranging in ages from 25-54; and from a variety of backgrounds will find inspirational ideas and how-to examples that enable them to improve their “single life”. Navigating the Challenges of Summer Pet Travel

Navigating the Challenges of Summer Pet Travel

PETCO Partners with Radio Personality, Tracie Hotchner, to Simplify Summer Pet Travel

San Diego (Vocus) May 28, 2010

Summer is just around the corner, school is almost out, the weather is heating up and bags are being packed. Many Americans will soon head out on vacation and bring along their four-legged friend. According to the Travel Industry Association of America, an estimated 29.1 million Americans have traveled with a pet in the past three years. However, few consider the many safety and regulation issues associated with pet travel until it’s too late. PETCO and pet expert Tracie Hotchner, host of NPR’s Gracie-Award® winning show “Dog Talk”® and “Cat Chat”® on the Martha Stewart channel of SiriusXM satellite radio, have teamed up to educate vacationers on the many challenges associated with pet travel and how to better prepare yourself and your furry friend.

CHALLENGE #1: Ensuring Your Establishment is Pet-Friendly

SOLUTION: You may be surprised to learn that finding a pet-friendly hotel is easier than ever if you know where to look. The Internet is a great place to start for the most up-to-date and timely information. There are also many websites that have comprehensive lists of pet-friendly hotels and campgrounds. Stop by an AAA office to pick up their localized pet guide. Extra tip: when staying in your home-away-from-home, feed pets on the tile bathroom floor to help with hotel cleanup and always tip the maid for a job well done.

CHALLENGE #2: Knowing What to Pack for Your Pet

SOLUTION: Packing for a pet is much like packing for a child -- you must prepare for every occasion. Make sure your dog has a collar listing your mobile number not your home number. Microchips are another surefire way to ensure a pet’s safe return if lost. Prepare your pets’ normal food in plastic bags, as switching their diet can result in stomach upset. For those packing lightly, freeze dried meals are available and easy to pack such as Grandma Lucy’s raw dehydrated premium foods sold in the natural section of PETCO. Always pack towels to cover the back seat of your car or rental car, as well as plastic bags to pick up after your pet regardless of local laws. Water is also critical, so bring portable water bowls and plenty of water. You can find PETCO brand foldable bowls at your nearest location. Simplify things by creating a pet travel kit with food, treats, favorite toys, any medicines and health documents.

CHALLENGE #3: Inconsistent & Confusing Pet Travel Airline Regulations

SOLUTION: There are so many things to consider when traveling by air and information is often confusing and ever-changing. Tracie says, “beginning your journey with a pre-approved pet carrier always helps to ensure your airline travel runs smooth.” PETCO and Sherpa have partnered with American Airlines to create the ''Guaranteed on Board'' program, which includes universally approved pet carriers that come with all the necessary information for airline pet travel. To avoid confusion at the airport, plan ahead by making a reservation for your pet. Most airlines only allow a small number of animals in the cargo area and an even smaller number of animals inside the cabin. If your pet is traveling in the cabin with you, they must fit comfortably under your seat in a pre-approved carrier and not be taken out for the duration of the flight. Additionally, make sure you have your pets’ health certificate, pet passport for international travel, and proof of age. Always check with your individual airline before taking off so you have the most up-to-date information.

CHALLENGE #4: Dealing with a Nervous Animal

SOLUTION: Just like humans, pets become anxious when put in new situations. “Before traveling, get your pet acquainted with their carrier or take them in the car to a place other than the vet,” Tracie suggests. The more familiar your animal is with their surroundings, the more at ease they will be. Most vets agree that you should not give your pet a tranquilizer before they fly. Your pet is more likely to deal better with their anxiety without tranquilizers. Additionally, less food in the animal’s system is less likely to upset his/her digestive track making the animal feel more at ease.

CHALLENGE #5: Ensuring Pet Safety

SOLUTION: A recent survey from petrelocation. com stated that 80 percent of those traveling with their pet say the safety of their pet is the most important thing when planning their travel arrangements. While driving in your car, Tracie suggests a dog seatbelt or a barrier. '''These products can be found in a major pet store like PETCO, and can help keep your animal contained and comfortable in the car.'' Try PETCO’s adjustable auto safety vest harness. Additionally, make sure not to leave your pet in the car for an extended time. Even leaving your pet in the car for a short amount of time on a hot day can be lethal. When traveling by air, Tracie suggests ''not letting your pet travel in the cargo area of a plane unless necessary.'' Although the cargo area is pressurized, its temperature often relates to the temperature outside the aircraft, which can be very hot or very cold.

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 6, 2006

Witness, a Manhattan-based emerging contemporary women’s wear line, is introducing their Organic Cotton Denim collection labeled White Buffalo for spring 2007. It is created out of a love for stylish luxury, environmentally-conscience people and the desire of all denim wearers to achieve the perfect fit.

One hundred percent pure organic cotton is used to make the denim. The result is a less damaging impact than conventional farming has on the planet. Organic agriculture protects the environment and health of people by reducing exposure to toxic chemicals that can end up in the ground, air, water, and food supply. Witness’ partners invest in renewable energy and carbon offsets using eco-friendly and sustainable materials while employing energy efficient and low-impact production methods; which maximizes recycling and waste reduction.

Witness first styles and designs the looks in New York. The Denim is then washed and finished in Italy incorporating the latest wash concepts from the best minds in denim.

For the client who wants only the best, the 950 style is outfitted with platinum rivets and shanks. As well as jeans, Witness is also producing organic denim jackets, dress’s and skirts.

Witness launched in September of 2005 and is located in the Fashion District of Midtown Manhattan. Marcus and Terry Mera are the dynamic duo that head up the design at Witness. It is a Women's Contemporary line with a focus on comfort and details. Using innovative fabrics and design techniques is paramount for Witness in making a complete collection from denim to sweaters. Look forward to the launch of Witness Menswear for Spring ’08.

LegalView Continues Monitoring of Developments Regarding Traumatic Brain Injury as Defense Department Distributes Funds to Combat More American Servicemen and Women Returning with Brain Injuries

LegalView Continues Monitoring of Developments Regarding Traumatic Brain Injury as Defense Department Distributes Funds to Combat More American Servicemen and Women Returning with Brain Injuries

With traumatic brain injuries (TBI) affecting more than 1 million civilians each year and as many as two-thirds of American service members returning from overseas, brain injuries are a vital contemporary public health issue. LegalView. com is proud to provide a free, comprehensive portal on TBIs to help victims and their families learn more about the medical and legal aspects of surviving a brain injury.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) August 21, 2007

With traumatic brain injury (TBI) remaining a serious and growing public health issue, LegalView. com is committed to maintaining one of the web's most comprehensive portals of information and news on TBIs. This is especially important as more and more U. S. servicemen and women return from combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan having suffered a debilitating traumatic brain injury. The effect has become so widespread that the U. S. Department of Defense recently dedicated approximate $450 million nation-wide to help veteran treatment centers better combat the challenge that treating TBIs can cause. This dispersion of funds includes subcontracting to innovative programs such as the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicines in Pomona, CA, which received a $17.3 million contract to develop new brain injury treatment strategies in late July.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1.4 million people in the United States sustain a brain injury each year, largely through falls, car accidents and sports. And unfortunately, that number doesn't take into account the TBIs suffered by returning veterans; TBIs have been called the signature injuries of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. With much of a generation at risk for the catastrophic disabilities that TBI can cause -- including physical, mental, emotional and behavioral problems -- LegalView invites readers who want to learn more to visit its complete TBI portal at http://brain-injury. legalview. com/ (http://brain-injury. legalview. com/).

Traumatic brain injury is a medical term for any blow to the head that disrupts normal brain function. Even a blow that doesn't cause unconsciousness can be a TBI. Stronger blows can cause serious physical disabilities, amnesia, learning problems, comas or even death. The CDC reports that TBIs are responsible for about 50,000 deaths each year and 235,000 hospitalizations. In addition, the United States Army's Walter Reed Medical Center reports that as many as two-thirds of the soldiers that come through its doors on their return from Iraq and Afghanistan have incurred a TBI. Those who survive a traumatic brain injury may lose part or all of certain brain functions permanently. The disabilities that result from a TBI can be permanent and may require years of physical and occupational therapy, long-term medication and ongoing oversight by medical specialists. In addition to being a catastrophic change in the lives of the victims and their loved ones, this can be extremely expensive.

Victims, their families and anyone else interested in learning more about traumatic brain injuries are invited to browse LegalView. com's comprehensive online collection of brain injury information (http://brain-injury. legalview. com), which is offered free to the public. The TBI portal site includes a collection of original articles, a brain injury blog tracking TBI news and research, collections of information on jury verdicts and settlements related to TBIs, a glossary of brain injury terms, and an attorney referral service to help families and victims get counsel from an experienced brain injury lawyer (http://brain-injury. legalview. com/).

LegalView's free offerings don't stop with the traumatic brain injury portal. Visitors can browse many other portals addressing issues that are important to contemporary America, including resources to help individuals get in contact with a mesothelioma lawyer (http://mesothelioma. legalview. com/), a construction accident attorney (http://construction. legalview. com/), or an auto accident lawyer (http://crash. legalview. com/). All of these portals, and LegalView's other resources, contain basic information, legal resources, guides to medical and industry jargon, links to useful books and web sites and more. And those who are interested in speaking to a lawyer can also take advantage of LegalView's free online attorney referral service, which matches potential clients with experienced attorneys in their areas.

LegalView. com is a free public service brought to you by Legal WebTV Network, LLC, a Limited Liability Corporation formed by the nation's most distinguished law firms: Anapol Schwartz; Brent Coon and Associates; Burg Simpson; Cohen, Placitella and Roth; James F. Humphreys and Associates; Lopez Hodes; and Thornton and Naumes. For more information on the accomplishments and track records of LegalView. com's well-regarded sponsoring law firms and to get in touch with LegalView attorneys, visit LegalView at http://www. legalview. com/ (http://www. legalview. com/).
