2) Define your goals and interview several trainers who specialize in working with people just like you. If you want general fitness conditioning you are not going to hire a trainer who specializes in training power lifters.



3) Try several trainers before you make your final choice. Most trainers will offer a trial period to see if personalities are compatible.



4) Take the time to check references and learn about the trainer’s background. A good trainer will provide a potential client with references of a few past and current clients as well as the sources of their certifications or degrees.

The holidays are just around the corner, and that means holiday parties. Clothes shopping for those special events should be a pleasant experience, right? Not for some women - especially those of us with not so perfect bodies. Too many women with otherwise healthy self esteem can experience the dressing room blues; feelings of anxiety, dread or downright depression in the dressing room.



A recent Fitness Magazine survey of 1,000 women clothes shoppers found that 10% of female respondents have cried in a dressing room. Another 15% have ripped or been stuck in an article of clothing and 39% have purchased clothes too small in hopes it would later fit. Other women admitted to being afraid to reveal their dress size to sales staff and nearly two-thirds of adult women say clothes shopping adversely affect their self confidence, which is particularly true among women wanting to lose more than 30 pounds.



New York City fashion designer debra deRoo offers these tips to help real sized women shop confidently for fashionable holiday clothes.



1. Start Early and Wear the Right Clothes for Shopping

DeRoo suggests giving yourself at least two weeks lead time to find the right outfit for that special occasion. Try to wear or bring undergarments such as pantyhose, a strapless bra or cami that will pair well with various styles. Wear easy on/off clothes. And, pre-styled hair and makeup can make that dressing room mirror easier to face.



2. Find Boutiques that Cater to You

Finding the right store is essential to clothes shopping success. Stores with a mature, friendly, and fashion conscious staff will know the cuts and styles that best compliment your body type. They will assist you with appropriate selections, and will help you feel comfortable and less self conscious. And, consider the shopping environment. Are you best in a calm and quiet environment, or somewhere that's hip and vibrant?



3. Choose Styles that Flatter

Research designers who make clothes that minimize figure flaws and play up attributes. Do you have great legs? Play them up with a shorter style dress that draws attention there. A thick middle? Consider an empire a-line dress that creates a faux waistline. deRoo also suggests pants paired with a stylish cropped jacket that does not constrict your middle.



4. Dressing Rooms & Lighting

The ideal dressing room is ample sized with lots of hooks and at least one full length mirror. Avoid shops with overhead fluorescent lights as they show every lump, bump and bulge. Instead, look for dressing rooms with not too bright, warm hued lights that flatter your skin tone.



5. Take Your Time Shopping

Shop when you have time, aren't rushed, and preferably not after a meal. Try to schedule one or two hours for shopping and you're much less likely to make a fashion faux pas.

NEWPORT, Ore — Once you see this creature, you clearly understand why they are called sea dragons. Related to the seahorse, the newest arrivals at the Oregon Coast Aquarium sport the sleek appearance of their cousins, with the addition of leaflike appendages on their head and body. There are two types of sea dragons—leafy and weedy—making their home around rocky reefs and inshore seagrass only along the temperate southern coast of Australia. Both species will be part of the new Enchanted Seas exhibit opening Memorial Day weekend.



Sea dragons are fish that look like a piece of floating seaweed—that is, until you notice their independent-moving eyes scoping you out (just like a chameleon) or until they swim after a meal of tiny shimplike creatures, using powerful suction action to capture their prey. The male sea dragon handles baby-rearing duties by carrying the female’s 100-250 fertile eggs all the way through their hatching.



Not swift swimmers, sea dragons usually stay very still among the seagrass or kelp, waiting for mysid shrimp or sea lice to go by and slurping their prey up through long, tubelike mouths the same way we use a straw. Sea dragons have an armored body much like the seahorses’, covered with yellow, green and tan skin that spreads out to make the “leafy” or “weedy” camouflage appendages. They grow up to 18 inches in length and live for up to two years.



While sea dragons are eaten by other fishes or their babies may be consumed by anemones, they face bigger dangers from trawl fishing, from illegal capture for home aquariums, and Asian trade for medical powders and potions. Their populations are also threatened by decreasing marine habitat as well as increasing nearshore water pollution. The leafy and weedy sea dragons will be part of the new Enchanted Seas exhibit opening Memorial Day weekend and featuring the mystical world of seahorses, cuttlefish, tropical reef fishes, alligators and other magical sea creatures worth protecting.

Connecting for Kids: Campaign 2008 is a portal for people whose children or loved ones are living with a life-threatening disease or traumatic injury and see stem cell research as a direct lead to the possibility of cures/recovery. It is also a place for the politically active, progressive community that wishes to advance the cause of stem cell research and its potential for medical breakthroughs.



Connecting for Kids: Campaign 2008 will inspire dialogue about the importance of stem cell research worldwide and it will encourage those who want to see these potential medical breakthroughs advanced, to lend their support to our campaign.



Currently stem cell research is heavily restricted in the United States. The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) Research Institute (http://www. sickkids. ca/research) in Toronto is in a unique position within the global stem cell community. The Canadian Assisted Human Reproduction Act (http://www. hc-sc. gc. ca/hl-vs/reprod/index-eng. php), passed in 2004, allows research on spare in vitro fertilized embryos as long as it promises a clear benefit for human health. Because of Canada's position on stem cell research and an unrivaled concentration of excellent stem cell researchers at SickKids and in Toronto, the Research Institute is poised to make stem cell breakthroughs that will have a long-standing impact on the future of health care.



Researchers believe that stem cell-based therapeutics may be used for diseases like cancer, Type-1 diabetes, joint diseases or conditions like heart damage, spinal cord injury, baldness and even missing teeth. Stem cells are also particularly exciting in the area of regenerative medicine and transplantation where adult stem cells could mitigate rejection issues.

A fifth person died in Egypt a few days ago, and the world barely paid attention while waiting to watch the made for TV movie on bird flu.

A 27 year old woman from Minufiya in northern Egypt died May 5. She apparently caught the virus from her personal flock of chickens.

At its weekly Friday Forum luncheon on Sept. 23, City Club of Portland presents “Methademic: A Reasoned Look at Public Crisis,” with guest speakers Mark McDonnell, Senior Deputy District Attorney for Multnomah County; Rita Sullivan, Ph. D., Executive Director of OnTrack, Inc., a rehabilitation center in Medford; and Steve Suo, a journalist for The Oregonian who has covered the meth beat extensively.



City ClubÂ’s Friday Forum, which is open to the public, will be held in the Governor Hotel (614 S. W. 11th Ave.). Doors open at 11:30 a. m. Program begins at 12:15 p. m. and concludes at 1:15 p. m. Use of methamphetamines — an addictive drug that’s cheap, easy to make and particularly widespread in the Northwest — has far-reaching effects on communities. Obvious consequences for users and manufacturers include illness, injury and death. From 2001 to 2004, meth ranked as the state’s second-deadliest illicit drug, with the number of meth-related deaths increasing from 50 to 78 in that period.



Property owners, too, face financial loss due to damage from fires, explosions, decontamination costs and loss of rent. Police estimate that 85 percent of property crimes and crimes involving identity theft are directly tied to meth use. There are also increased costs to the public for medical services and emergency room use for meth users and producers.



Governments must spend tax dollars on additional law enforcement, prosecution and social services. In fact, one local economic consulting firm pegged Multnomah County’s “meth tax” — the costs of property crimes, fires, incremental foster care, meth lab cleanups of housing and certain health care costs borne by the community at large through direct economic losses, higher insurance premiums and other means — at $363 per household, more than the average 2004 Multnomah County income tax.



Meth use also contributes to domestic violence, child abuse, motor vehicle accidents and the spread of infectious diseases through shared needles and high-risk sexual behavior. And its manufacture degrades environmental quality when hazardous components and byproducts find their way into soil, water and air.



Oregon Partnership’s 2005 Portland Profile reports that meth lab seizures more than doubled in the tri-county area between 2000 and 2004, attributed largely to budget constraints. Statewide, however, the the number of seized meth labs dropped about 50 percent in the five months following the Oregon Board of Pharmacy’s October 2004 adoption of a temporary rule to control consumer access to cold pills that contain ephedrine or pseudoephed-rine — key ingredients in meth production.



The new state law requiring a doctor’s prescription for such medications is one step in a comprehensive community response to a communitywide problem. But what more can be done? Join us to hear first-hand from those working in the field about what this “methademic” means for our community.

Steve Suo, 37, is a crime reporter with The Oregonian. His five-part series on meth, published last October under the title "Unnecessary Epidemic," showed how the federal government long ago could have contained the spread of the country's methamphetamine epidemic. The series revealed how simple but compelling solutions were delayed, scantly funded, or abandoned time and again, allowing the drug's abuse to spread inexorably from West Coast to East. The series was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in National Reporting and Harvard University's Goldsmith Award for Investigative Reporting. Slate magazine's media critic, Jack Shafer, last month posted a column urging journalists who write about meth: "Don't, don't, don't write a column inch on the subject before you read The Oregonian's comprehensive methamphetamine package from head to toe."



Suo has worked at The Oregonian since 1994, starting out on the politics beat later moving to the paper's crime team. He specializes in projects that combine statistical analysis with traditional investigative techniques. Some of his major stories have included: a reconstruction of what went wrong in the New Carissa shipwreck response; an early analysis of the costs and benefits of gentrification in Portland; and an in-depth profile of Mark Hemstreet, hotel tychoon and GOP campaign financier. Steve holds a master's degree from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and a bachelor's degree in government from Oberlin College.

Facial Procedures Top for Men Seeking Cosmetic Enhancement



According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, facial cosmetic surgery and nonsurgical facial procedures are the most popular treatments for men. Denver facial plastic surgeons Dr. Andrew Wolfe and Dr. Steven Vath discuss why.

"With increased information, we've seen attitudes about cosmetic procedures relax – particularly among men," states Dr. Vath. Celebrities, pro athletes, and other high profile males are more open about enhancing their facial appearance, which may have helped to de-stigmatize facial procedures for men.
