Singapore Raises the Bar with New Orthopedic Technique

Singapore Raises the Bar with New Orthopedic Technique

An innovative surgeon here has developed a simple yet effective technique to tackle the high failure rates associated with conventional methods of mending Acromioclavicular Joint (ACJ) dislocations.

Singapore (Vocus) May 5, 2010

Dr Lim Yeow Wai readily supports the adage that necessity is the mother of all inventions. He is, after all, a medical innovator in his own right.

A consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Raffles Hospital, Dr Lim pioneered his own method of treating shoulder dislocations after observing that conventional procedures do not offer lasting solutions.

"There have been numerous types of surgeries performed for shoulder dislocation but so far, outcomes from these various methods have not been good, especially when the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) is involved," he says.

The joint, which is located at the top of the shoulder, is made up of two bones – the clavicle and the acromion – and four ligaments which give it stability. Depending on the severity of a shoulder injury, a person may sprain or tear one or all of the ligaments.

According to Dr Lim, shoulder-related injuries are relatively common in today's athletic society. ACJ injuries are often sustained by cyclists, as well as those who engage in contact sports such as rugby, martial arts and American football. If not properly treated, it can lead to significant loss of strength in the affected limb.

"Presently, most of the treatment methods employ rigid forms of fixation using metal implants such as hook plates, pins and screws. This bolts the bones in place, but often leads to failure because the ACJ joint is not meant to be fixed in place. It is a flexible joint which can rise and rotate during movement. Also, screws and pins are often ineffective because they usually work themselves loose after some time, due to necessary movements in and around the shoulder area," explains Dr Lim.

His dissatisfaction led him to develop the Triple Endobutton technique – a non-rigid method that allows for normal movement of the joint. All that's needed is three tiny buttons and two strands of Fibrewire suture. The buttons are made of stainless steel and are only about 1cm across.

During the operation, the suture is looped through the button holes and over the shoulder bone, resulting in a 'snow shoe' hold that allows for fluid movements while stabilizing the joint. According to Dr Lim, this method gives even greater strength compared to the natural ligaments.

The procedure takes place under general anaesthesia with the patient in a beach chair position. So far, Dr Lim has performed 30 such operations with only one failure, giving this technique a failure rate of less than five percent. This is a far cry from the 20 percent failure rate associated with conventional treatment method.

One patient who has benefitted from Dr Lim's innovative treatment is Mr John Tuffin. The 62-year-old Australian is an avid sportsman who injured his shoulder following a horse riding accident in April last year (2009). To make matters worse, he tripped and fell several months later while boarding a ferry.

In terrible pain, Mr Tuffin sought help at Raffles Hospital and was referred to Dr Lim, who confirmed the diagnosis of chronic ACJ dislocation and explained the Triple Endobutton procedure to a much relieved Mr Tuffin.

"It made good sense to me. I said 'That's it! I'll get it done!' and didn't think twice." The surgery took one and a half hours and he was discharged the day after.

"Although I was in slight pain for the first few days, I saw the benefits immediately. My sleep is no longer disrupted and rolling over in bed does not hurt anymore," says a delighted Mr Tuffin.

All in praise of Dr Lim's efficiency, he says: "Dr Lim was very thorough and did the relevant checks to ensure that my body was fit for the operation to be carried out. He is a very good surgeon and I have much faith in his hands. The results more than speak for themselves."

"My stay at Raffles Hospital was excellent! All my expectations were met and I don't think the doctors and nurses could have done anything more. Excellent!"

Currently, the Triple Endobutton technique is only performed in Singapore. The cost of the surgery is S$10,000. This compares favourably to conventional shoulder surgeries in the US, which usually range between US$20,000 and US$25,000.

Management Support Can Make or Break Workplace Wellness Program

Management Support Can Make or Break Workplace Wellness Program

Latest Health Enhancement Systems white paper offers research summary plus 15 ways managers can promote a culture of health.

Midland, MI (Vocus) November 3, 2009

Though management support is a key to success in workplace wellness programs (http://www. hesonline. com/mwp), keeping managers on board can be a struggle.

Health Enhancement Systems defines the role of leadership in a newly released white paper, Management Support: Inspiring Wellness Leadership.

Numerous studies show the positive impact of management support on employee health, retention, wellness program participation, productivity — and ultimately on the bottom line.

Overall, managers wield a powerful influence on employee morale, workloads, team communication, and job satisfaction, according to the extensive research summarized in this 8-page white paper. Managers often decide the scope, budget, and time off for wellness program activities as well. They can champion the efforts or doom them to failure.

“Managers who make wellness program participation easy — along with being good examples — help create an atmosphere where employees can thrive,” notes Dean Witherspoon, Health Enhancement Systems President and Founder.

The white paper — available as a free download — offers ideas like these:

Involve managers at all levels in policy development and implementation to promote their buy-in. After all, they will be the ones approving flexible scheduling, reducing workplace stress (http://www. hesonline. com/mwp), encouraging stretch and walk breaks, and boosting overall participation among employees.  Ask executives, managers, and front-line supervisors to inspire employees by sharing success stories, informally or formally, and visibly participating in onsite wellness campaigns.

Health Enhancement Systems serves organizations in North America and throughout the world. In addition to numerous white papers, they’ve created more than 20 paper and online workplace wellness campaigns including NutriSum: Healthy Weight for Life, Get Fit on Route 66, Great American Fitness Adventure, Feel Like a Million, and 10K-A-Day, adopted in more than 1000 organizations serving employees and family members worldwide. Other products include lifestyle change brochures and the Health Promotion Practitioner newsletter.

The Players Club and Spa chooses MelanSol to Promote Healthy Skin Among Members

The Players Club and Spa chooses MelanSol to Promote Healthy Skin Among Members

Showing leadership in their industry, the Players Club and Spa, Naples, Florida, is first to provide Melansol 100 percent natural sunscreen to members and guests to promote healthy skin. MelanSol is a new generation of dual skin protection that combines super anti-oxidants with mineral pigments to provide premium skin protection and verified UVA and UVB protection.

Panama City Beach, FL (PRWEB) October 10, 2007

The Players Club and Spa (http://playersclubandspa. com) Naples, Florida is the first health and fitness club and spa in the nation to begin offering MelanSol (http://puresunscreen. com/Product. htm) 100 percent natural sunscreen to Members and guests to promote healthy skin.

"MelanSol was brought to my attention by one of our members who saw an article about it in our local paper," says George Hunt, the clubs General Manager. "He was so excited about us carrying MelanSol, that he came to me the next day with the contact phone number and told me to make the call because it would be so beneficial to everybody."

"People nowadays are so health conscious", Hunt went on to say, "I think that carrying an all natural product is the wave of the future. People are educating themselves about the harmful chemicals in products and we want to be ahead of the game by offering a healthy alternative for skin protection."

The Players Club and Spa caters to a diverse membership from all over the US, ranging from families with children to super seniors. They will be offering MelanSol through their Spa, where specialists can recommend the proper formula.

"Our average clients are Boomers who wants to lead a more active lifestyle, says Hunt. "They want to hike, bike, walk, swim, play golf and tennis, and go to the beach until they are 90. We are a health and fitness center, so a large part of our membership works out and is conscious of what they eat and what they do to their body. They also understand how damaging the sun is, yet don't want to give it up because they live in Southwest Florida because of the sun and are very active outside" said Hunt.

According to the FDA, 90 percent of all skin damage in your lifetime occurs through casual exposure to UV rays. Because of this, Hunt will also make MelanSol available to his employees. "The health, safety and wellbeing of our employees is also important to us, so we will make MelanSol available to them as well, with special emphasis towards those persons that work outside in the sun in our Tiki Bars, pools and landscape areas" said Hunt.

MelanSol 100 percent natural sunscreen is a system of dual skin protection that begins working the moment it is applied. The super anti-oxidant rich formula works with the body to provide skin with premium protection from free radical (http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Free_radical_theory) damage, while the zinc oxide provides reflective protection from UVA and UVB radiation across the full spectrum. MelanSol has already been tested according to new (FDA) (http://www. medicalnewstoday. com/articles/80554.php) rules for testing, formulating and labeling UVA protection. Its UVA/UVB protection is displayed on the label.

The super anti-oxidant of choice in the potent MelanSol formula is Bio-Melanin, an extract from the fruit of the date palm. Bio-Melanin is unique because it has a 1000 times greater capacity for capturing and terminating free radicals than vitamin E and green tea alone. The best way to illustrate this is if you think of Bio-Melanin as an airport and free radicals as thousands of planes that land and are prevented from leaving. "Our Esthetician was all for carrying MelanSol" said Hunt. "She understands the effect chemicals can have on the skin."

MelanSol is great for the environment and perfect for a community pool. Its 100 percent natural, biodegradable formula assures that there are no harmful chemicals to wash off into pools, lakes, streams and oceans.

MelanSol is distributed in the US by Oceana Naturals, LLC, and is currently available on the web at http://www. MelanSol. us (http://www. MelanSol. us) by calling 1-866-242-3776 and in stores near you.

FL AHCA Cover-Up Forces Schoch to Issue Public Writ of Mandamus

FL AHCA Cover-Up Forces Schoch to Issue Public Writ of Mandamus

A cover-up by the Florida AHCA (under Jeb Bush) in regards to the treatment and care of Theresa Schindler Schiavo, etc. forces Juan Schoch to issue a Public Writ of Mandamaus to various City, County, State and Federal officials.

Tallahassee, FL (PRWEB) September 2, 2004

The following public writ of mandamus was sent via Express Mail and certified letters to all parties in the letter on 8-28-04. It was also passed out to the media in Tallahassee the day before and on the day of the oral arguments before the Florida Supreme Court regarding the constitutionality of HB 35-E/S 12-E (Public Law 03-418). This is my Public Writ of Mandamus. Each letter came with a mini cd of the AHCA documentation and other information which proves there is a cover-up. (Note: If you would like to represent or know someone who would like to represent this case please call Juan Schoch at 407-925-4141):

August 28, 2004

James D. Boyd

Inspector General of AHCA

2727 Mahan Drive

Tallahassee, FL 32308-5403

Re: All information, CCR#s, and yet to be assigned CCR#s contained

And referred to in CIG#200406030002 and AHCA Tracking #05-003, etc.,

Other cases yet to be generated and your duties to set Theresa

Schindler Schiavo on the road to her recovery (much can be found in

The enclosed mini compact disc)

Dear Mr. Boyd:

Thank you for your letter of August 13, 2004 regarding my August 9,

2004 e-mail requesting public records and copies of various agency

Documents. In your response you write "Â…the issues raised in your

June 3 letter and July 20 e-mail did not show evidence of possible

Violations of statutes, policy or procedure that could constitute

Misconduct or wrongdoing on the part of agency staffÂ…" to which I

Make the following statement and request:

I demand as a United States citizen and a Florida resident

Sufficient corrective actions, remedies, redress, relief, etc. to

What I perceive and know to be illegal actions of AHCA, facilities,

Etc. I hereby request AHCA and any other government agency or

Entity, local, county, state or federal invested with investigative,

Enforcement and prosecutorial powers who may be reading this, or

Others of whom it is within their purview of being able to contact

Said powers, etc. to do their jobs of investigating, enforcing or

Assisting in getting the laws enforced in regards to valid

Allegations of acts of felony neglect and attempted murder, etc.

Perpetrated against the person of Theresa Schindler Schiavo.

While it is my duty (when it has come to my knowledge) as a resident

Of the State of Florida and a United States Citizen to report

Abuses, neglect or exploitations against vulnerable people who can't

Speak for themselves it is NOT my job to site book and page. One

Would think that the competency level of all persons in agencies

Serving the public who by statute are to receive, properly review

And survey complaints for violations of statutes, criminal

Violations, disregard for policies and procedures that are in fact

Evidence of misconduct or wrongdoing on the part of agency staff and

Facilities, persons, etc. would be much higher then heretofore

Displayed.

I have provided, while perhaps to some seemingly disconnected or

Incongruent, sufficient, overall and comprehensive evidence to

Illuminate within the average persons mind and their reasonable

Ability to piece together and comprehend pertinent data, more than

Enough evidences of illegal conduct, which point to statute

Violations on the part of agency staff and facilities, etc. and it

Has become painfully clear that people in your and other agencies

Are spending more time sending not just me, but most complainants,

Relating to the matters presented, far afield from the matter at

Hand, of which there is or are:

Non-delivery of all 15 retained rights of this incapacitated person pursuant to Florida Statute 744.3215(1)(a-o) both

Individually and collectively as a whole

State licensed facilities bowing to the abuse of power by the guardian, his attorneys, local law enforcement, the state attorneys

Office, and other public officials to facilitate and further the

Denial and withholding of this citizens statutory and constitutional

Retained rights

Illegal acts and or omissions by many supervisory level personnel in many agencies and facilities, in non-fulfillment of their duty by

Those personnel pursuant to Florida Statute 415.1034 mandatory

Reporting to invoke and call upon protections under the

Whistleblowers act when their employment is threatened. Such and

Other failures are enabling, promoting and facilitating what appears

To be an overall agenda of their various supervisors (and others)

Who indirectly and/or directly are working collectively (knowingly

Or unknowingly) pursuant to a directed agenda by the recently

Exposed many in positions of public trust

In light of the fact that AHCA Complaint Administration Unit intake

Operator Justina told me that they "didn't want to hear about what

Particular statute violations were occurring as it is the AHCA's job

To know these things," and as I have stated above it is not my job

To point out the specific violations of statutes, policy, or

Procedure that could constitute misconduct or wrongdoing on the part

Of agency staff, facilities, etc. (your words in bold), it should be

Obvious to you that while I am perfectly capable of seeing and

Reporting specific violations I was being told not to do this by the

Complaint Administration Unit intake personnel. Now I am being told

By you to the contrary that I must do your jobs. This in and of

Itself is evidence of an agency and a system that continues to

Notoriously exhibit incompetence in this matter, and only proves a

Limited ability to send the very people who you serve, on endless

Tail-chases and endless non-productive rabbit trails.

While all of this energy is expended, the primary matter at hand,

The FS825.102 and FS825.103 abuse, neglect and exploitation of

Theresa Marie Schiavo continues at the liable hands of all agencies,

Various personnel and public officials, etc. to the detriment of not

Only her but all vulnerable adults, elderly and disabled persons

Throughout the State of Florida by the acts and omissions of every

One of these negligent persons who are entrusted with the Public's

Trust.

BE IT KNOWN, that everyone is officially on notice, that to continue

To obey these illegal and subversive directives, of persons who wish

To continue to further the obvious and blatant efforts to

Intentionally cause the death of this very conscious, self-aware,

Cognitive, disabled and vulnerable adult (who has been actively

Prevented from getting better) as defined by Florida Statute 415,

744, 825, 400, 782, the ADA Act, and CFR42 rises to the level of

Felony crimes and is unlawful, collectively, pursuant to Florida

Statute 876.22 through FS876.31 known as the Subversive Activities

Act, in that the collective efforts, whether knowingly or

Unknowingly, of all the involved including medical professionals,

Public servants, facilities, guardians, caregivers, and others, is

Ultimately resulting in the destruction of all that we as free

Citizens enjoy as our constitutional protections, which are there to

Guarantee our inalienable right to life, liberty to that life, and

The pursuit of happiness through our FS744.3215 retained right to be

Restored to capacity at the earliest possible time, which has no

Time limit.

An Inalienable Right is particularly defined as: That which cannot

Be given or taken away. Thusly, a person cannot Give their Life away

Nor can it be Taken away. Both are crimes, and protections of life

Are networked rather thoroughly throughout our Laws and our

Constitution.

Consider this my public Writ of Mandamus to all (with various media

As my witness) who will be receiving this letter, to cease and

Desist your acts or omissions which are felony crime statute

Violations, which may lead ultimately to this woman's death by your

Incompetency, complacency, malfeasance, misfeasance, obedience to

Personal or collective agendas, disobedience of mandatory reporting

Of abuse, neglect and exploitations. This will require your

Proactive efforts in conjunction with other agencies and persons, to

Go against those who draw you in and only use you as pawns in a

Bigger agenda, by this case, to create a constitutional Right To

Make You Dead. Investigate and prosecute the guilty parties. It is

Your obligation to set Theresa on the road to her recovery.

Do your jobs or suffer the consequences in the long run for your

Participation in blatant, in your face, felony crimes.

Sincerely,

Juan Schoch / Lake Mary, FL

P. S. I was never issued new CCR#'s per my written complaints (June

3, 2004) and yet you have done nothing but obfuscate that fact. I

Find this more than just a little reprehensible and believe it shows

The complete and total incompetence, if not outright obstruction of

Justice, by you, your staff, the AHCA Complaint Administration Unit

And others in your agency. It would be smart to stop digging

Yourself a hole and get back on the right track.

Cookbooks Fuse Family Recipes with Family History

Cookbooks Fuse Family Recipes with Family History

For the first time, all three cookbooks in CapitalÂ’s New American Family Cookbook series are together in a set to provide meals with a twist.

Dulles, VA (PRWEB) September 22, 2004

AmericaÂ’s melting pot draws from the best in our own country and from countries around the world, bettering our literature, art, ideas, beliefs, culture, and cuisine. CapitalÂ’s New American Family Cookbook series, newly released as a set, celebrates the affect of the worldÂ’s cuisine on American food.

Capital’s New American Family Cookbook series focuses on treasured Old Country family recipes and how they are changed by new blended American families in our increasingly diverse culture. "When my mother, Nohemi, and her three best friends came to the United States to start families of their own, they left behind their native cultures and foods. As they discovered that American food and ingredients were different than those commonly used in their homelands, they began to adapt and change the foods they knew so well from their own countries," explains Noemi Taylor, author of "¡Sabroso!: The Spanish American Family Cookbook." All three cookbooks in the series – "¡Sabroso!," "Nosthimia!," and "Mangia Bene!" – take family recipes from other countries and adapt them for American families.

In "Nosthimia!" (Greek for “delicious”), Georgia Sarianides adapts healthy and delicious Old World Greek recipes to new American ingredients and lifestyles with her unique blend of zest and humor. As a mother of four and with a full time career, Georgia plans meals that are healthy and don’t require hours in the kitchen. A graduate of The Culinary School of Athens, Georgia has hosted a weekly cable television program, "Cooking with Georgia" for the past 5 years She is the author of "The Best of Greek Cuisine" (Hippocrene Books, 2001). She has been featured in The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, The Greek American News, and The New York Times. Georgia lives in Franklin, MA with her family. Try this appetizer recipe from "Nosthimia!":

GeorgiaÂ’s Special Spinach Triangles (Spanakopitakia)

“Spanakopitakia is one of the most popular meze from Greece. It can be served hot or cold.”

Ingredients:

2 to 2 ½ pounds fresh spinach

1 cup olive oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

½ cup chopped scallions

½ cup chopped fresh parsley

½ cup chopped fresh dill

2 large eggs

½ pound feta cheese, crumbled

½ cup grated kefalotyri or Parmesan cheese

1 pound fillo dough

Olive oil, for brushing the triangles

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Wash the spinach very well and drain it in a colander. When it has drained completely, chop the spinach very thin. In a large saucepan, heat ½ cup olive oil and sauté the onion, scallions, dill, and parsley for 5 minutes. Add the spinach and stir the mixture together. Lower the heat and let simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a colander to drain any liquid, then place spinach mixture into a large bowl and allow it to cool for 20 minutes. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs, stir in the feta cheese, sprinkle with the grated kefalotyri and a little salt and pepper, and mix the ingredients well. Unroll the fillo dough and keep it covered while working with 2 sheets at a time. Brush each one with oil, then stack one on top of the other. Cut the fillo into 5 long strips. Place 2 teaspoons of the spinach mixture in the middle bottom of each strip, then fold the right corner up and to the left, to form a right angle. Continue folding like a flag, making each into a triangle. Place the triangles 1 inch apart on a greased cookie sheet. Brush the tops with oil and sprinkle with a little water. Bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Yield 2 to 2 ½ dozen

Nearly twenty five years ago, four women from different parts of the world met in the unlikely locale of eastern Ohio. These women—who hailed from Spain, Peru, Colombia, and Argentina—have remained close through the years, celebrating milestones together, and sharing their lives, cultures, and most importantly, their recipes with each other. Noemi Taylor, the daughter of one of the women, has compiled 200 of these recipes into "¡Sabroso!: The Spanish American Family Cookbook.'" Noemi Taylor is the publications manager for the Council on Social Work Education. She is co-author of the book, "What Goes With What: Home Decorating Made Easy." A native of Madrid, Spain, Noemi grew up eating her mother’s Spanish recipes. She lives in the Washington, DC area with her husband and three dogs. For a hearty Fall dish, try this Colombian dish:

Baked Corn Pudding (Pure de Maiz)

Ingredients:

6 tablespoons butter

1 large onion, chopped

1 garlic clove, minced

½ of a green bell pepper, chopped

½ of a red bell pepper, chopped

½ of a jalapeno or another hot pepper, chopped

4 tablespoons flour

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cans of cream style corn

6 eggs, slightly beaten

2 cups milk

Directions:

Melt the butter in a skillet at medium heat. Add onions, garlic, and all 3 peppers. Cook, stirring until vegetables are tender. Stir in flour, salt, and pepper, until mixture is bubbly. Remove from heat. Add corn, eggs, and milk, stirring the entire time until the mixture is well blended. Pour the corn mixture into a shallow, buttered bowl or baking dish. Bake in oven at 350 for 55 minutes or until center is set.

Serving Size 4-6

Kate DeVivo, a Chicago-based editor, comes from an Italian American family with over 100 years of history in America—a family with more than a few recipes, traditions, stories, and characters. DeVivo has compiled over 200 of her family’s home-style Italian American recipes (plus a few not quite Italian) in "Mangia Bene!" Ranging from meaty to vegetarian, easy to difficult, complex to simple-and-fast, the recipes are ones your mother would make; the dishes you would expect to find on the table for Sunday dinner. For your next Sunday dinner, try:

Grandma DeMasiÂ’s Peppers and Tomatoes Al Gennaro

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 garlic cloves, chopped very fine

3 ½ cups fresh tomatoes, cored, blanched, peeled, and chopped coarse (or canned plum tomatoes)

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon chopped, fresh basil (or 1 teaspoon dried)

½ teaspoon sugar

1/3 cup olive oil

1 large Italian sausage (1/4 pound), cut on a slant into 1-inch slices

2 pounds green peppers, seeded and quartered

2 onions, sliced (about 1 cup)

Pepper, ground fresh, to taste

1/3 cup dry red wine or Madeira (optional)

Directions:

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet; add garlic and sauté until lightly browned. Add tomatoes, salt, basil, and sugar. Cook over medium heat for 30 minutes. While tomatoes are cooking, heat the remaining 1/3 cup olive oil in another skillet, and brown the sausage slices well on all sides. Transfer the slices with a slotted spoon to the tomato mixture in the other skillet.

Reserve the oil in which the sausage cooked in the skillet. Add peppers to same skillet and toss them well. Sauté for about 8 to 10 minutes, then add the onions, and cook for another 20 minutes, or until vegetables are softened and slightly charred. Add them to the tomato mixture, and cook together for an additional 5 to 10 minutes. Adjust seasonings to taste. Add wine or Madeira (if you wish) to the skillet after the peppers and onions have cooked. Deglaze the pan, and add the liquid to the tomato and pepper mixture before the last 5 or 10 minutes of cooking.

Venture Capital Investment Swings Back Up to $453 Million

Venture Capital Investment Swings Back Up to $453 Million

CapitalHunter. com was able to verify that $453 million of venture capital was invested in 40 U. S.-based companies during the past week.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) March 17, 2006

Weekly funding has oscillated around the $400 million mark the past couple of months, and this week was no exception. Venture capital investment rose once again this week, as over $453 million was placed into 40 companies, a week-over-week rise of 36% from last week’s $333 million. Unlike the past two weeks, where software and biotechnology investment dominated the headlines, this week’s funding represented a more egalitarian distribution between the sectors, as no industry received more than 18% and seven sectors received more than 5% of the $453 million pie.

Healthcare services investment was skewed, however, by the $77 million investment received by Take Care Health Systems, a provider of retail-based healthcare delivery systems based in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, which was the largest investment in a healthcare services company in over two years. The funding also accounted for the totality of healthcare services funding this week. Other notable investments for the week include ISE, a San Diego based provider of hybrid electric drive systems for trucks and busses which received a $25 million Series B investment from the trio of NGP Energy Technology Partners, Rockport Partners and Third Avenue Management, the Regency Beauty Institute, a Brooklyn Park, Minnesota based provider of cosmetic education which received a $20 million investment from LLR Partners and Prairie Capital, and Luxtera, a San Diego based company that provides IC technology to the optical communications industry which received a $22 million Series C investment from a consortium of investors, including Cal Tech, Sevin Rosen Funds, New Enterprise Associates and August Capital.

IPO Activity

IPO activity showed an uptick, as three companies listed this week, up from one last week. The three companies are as follows:

Alexza Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALXA) priced at $44 million and is a provider of therapeutics for the treatment of acute and intermittent conditions.

Eagle Test Systems (NASDAQ:EGLT) priced at $100.8 million and is a provider of high-performance automated test equipment for the semiconductor industry.

Tam SA (NYSE:TAM) priced at $463.8 million and is a Brazilian provider of air transportation services.

Top Venture Capital Investments

Take Care Health Systems, a provider of retail-based healthcare delivery systems, received $77 million in early stage funding from Beecken Petty O'Keefe and others.

Coremetrics, a provider of online marketing analytics services for the capture of clickstream activities, raised $31 million in Series D financing from Accel partners, FTVentures and Highland Capital Partners.

ISE raised $25 million in Series B funding from a consortium of private equity firms listed above.

Funding Breakdown

California was the largest recipient of venture capital funding this week. Fourteen California companies raised $186.8 million in new equity financing, which accounted for 41% of the total venture capital invested this reporting period. The largest private venture financing in California was placed into Coremetrics.

The healthcare services sector raised the most venture capital this reporting period, but the entirety of the funding was placed into Take Care Health Systems, mentioned in the introduction above. Software, the second most popular sector this week, had fourteen companies raise $72.9 million in venture financing, which accounted for only 16% of all investment this period. The largest private venture financing in the software sector this period was placed into BlueNote Networks. Bluenote Networks received $15 million in Series B funding and is a provider of IP telephony software and services.

Start-ups raising their Series A round of financing represented the largest share of the funding pie, as 34% of all money invested this period went into such companies. The largest such financing was placed into the aforementioned Take Care Health Systems.

Summary

A total of 98 equity financings of private and public companies occurred during this reporting period. Each of the 98 equity financings are profiled in a weekly (in this case biweekly) report which include venture financings, private placements, secondary offerings, PIPE’s, and IPO’s.

Mendota Heights, MN (PRWEB) July 16, 2006

Mr. James has accepted the appointment, and brings significant management and logistics experience to assist City Capital in its management of real estate developments.

Although his early training was in computer science (BS, 1984, DeVry Institute of Technology), Phillip James career path dramatically changed in 1998 when he received his Masters in Business Management (Webster). Mr. James had had great success and won numerous awards nationally and internationally in computer and IT management, but his heart had always been in missions and social programs.

In 1998, he began working first as Community Affairs Representative, later as Vice President Of Domestic Programs, for Heart-To-Heart International in Kansas City, MO. Here he actively identified, recruited and facilitated partnerships with community-minded organizations. He established budgets, identified prospective funding sources and raised financial support. Working with representatives of Tanzania, Africa (Arusha, Africa was Kansas City’s “Sister City”) and mainland China, he created systems to assess needs and procure products, establish logistics, monitor effectiveness and on-going need.

In 2000 he assumed management duties over U. S. Corporate Giving and Philanthropy for sanofi-aventis, Europe’s largest (and the world's third largest) pharmaceutical company. Among other duties he has redefined the company’s involvement in community initiatives. These include educational programs, United Way, Matching Gifts and Volunteer Programs as well as community health initiatives for the underserved and uninsured. Mr. St. James also manages the budget process and tracking of sanofi-aventis Foundation and departmental funds, while establishing a close relationship with accounts payable and finance. He brings an outstanding perception of the management and logistic requirements of complex operations in an international marketplace. Mr. St. James also brings a keen understanding of how to meet the needs of individuals and communities in a cost-effective way, with long-lasting results.

Tennis Channel to Offer U. S. Fans Exclusive Live Telecast of Historic Sampras-Federer Matches in Asia

Tennis Channel, the only 24-hour, television-based multimedia destination dedicated to both the professional sport and passionate lifestyle of tennis, has exclusive U. S. telecast rights to the highly anticipated exhibition series between all-time Grand Slam champion, Pete Sampras, and current threat to his crown, Roger Federer, during Thanksgiving week.

Los Angeles (PRWEB) November 22, 2007

Tennis Channel, the only 24-hour, television-based multimedia destination dedicated to both the professional sport and passionate lifestyle of tennis, has exclusive U. S. telecast rights to the highly anticipated exhibition series between all-time Grand Slam champion, Pete Sampras, and current threat to his crown, Roger Federer, during Thanksgiving week this month.

In the tradition of Ali vs. Frazier and Riggs vs. King, the 14-time Grand Slam-champion Sampras, 36, will take on the 12-time Grand Slam-champion Federer, 26, in a three-match exhibition tour in Asia from Nov. 20-24. All three competitions will air live or same-day delay on Tennis Channel followed by prime-time replays each evening at 8 p. m. ET.

Live and Same-Day Delay Schedule

Seoul, South Korea, Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, 7 a. m. ET (same-day delay)

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, 7 a. m. ET (live)

Macau, China, Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, 1 a. m. ET (live)

"Tennis Channel is proud to offer tennis fans the opportunity to see this monumental event in sports, both live as it happens on the other side of the world, and again in prime time," said Victoria Quoss, executive vice president of programming and network strategy, Tennis Channel. "It's rare in any sport for fans to actually find out what would happen if a legend from the past were to take on the greatest player in the game today. This will literally be history in the making right before our eyes."

In 2001 a young Federer won the only meeting between the two stars in the fourth round of Wimbledon, a fiercely contested battle that ended Sampras' 31-match tournament win streak, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5. It was the first time in Sampras' Wimbledon career that the seven-time champion lost a fifth set, and many left thinking either player could have emerged victorious.

The 2008 tennis season will be highlighted by Federer's chase of Sampras in the history books for his 14 Grand Sam championships. Sampras retired in 2001 after winning the US Open and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame this year.

Following the broadcast of this historic competition, Tennis Channel will make each match available via free broadband replay on its Web site, www. TennisChannel. com. The first match (Tuesday, Nov. 20) will appear online Wednesday, Dec. 5. The second (Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, Nov. 22) match will make its Web debut Thursday, Dec. 6, and the third match (Saturday, Nov. 24) will be on the site Friday, Dec. 7. This is in conjunction with Sampras and Federer highlight pages on the Web site now, as well as an online poll to determine who tennis fans feel is the greatest tennis player of all time.

Also available via broadband, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 4, will be an additional match on the star-studded Asian exhibition tour, between two of the sport's top 10 singles players: World No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 8 Richard Gasquet. The competition, which takes place next week during Sampras-Federer meetings, will not be carried on U. S. television, and will be exclusive www. TennisChannel. com where visitors can watch it for free.

Tennis Channel (www. tennischannel. com) is the only 24-hour, television-based multimedia destination dedicated to both the professional sport and passionate lifestyle of tennis. A hybrid of comprehensive sports, health, fitness, pop culture, entertainment, lifestyle and travel programming, the network is home to every aspect of the wide-ranging, worldwide tennis community. It also has the most concentrated single-sport coverage in television, with telecast rights to Wimbledon, Roland Garros (the French Open), the Australian Open, US Open Series, ATP Masters Series, top-tier Sony Ericsson WTA Tour championship competitions, Davis Cup and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, and Hyundai Hopman Cup. Tennis Channel is carried by eight of the top 10 MSOs and has a national footprint via DIRECTV and Echostar's DISH Network.

Trashy New Years Resolutions

Trashy New Years Resolutions

Authors of the book Trash Talk share ideas on how individuals can make small changes in thier lives while making large changes for the environment.

(PRWEB) January 5, 2005

This New Years, North Americans can pledge to make a dent in the mountains of waste right in their own communities.

How can we, as individuals, participate in waste management? Because some of us are so overwhelmed with Earth’s problems, we feel that our contributions have no real consequence in the end. For others, social barriers can be an issue. A lady we once knew confessed that she did not want to be seen buying used items or being concerned with power use. She was worried people would see her as cheap – a scrooge – when the family was so affluent. Yet, she was very careful to be seen with recycling bins out on the curb on pick-up day, because that was thought to be the thing to do socially.

Now is a good time to put an end to these negative thoughts and feelings of false pride. Waste reduction is not about ego - it is about the health of the planet and of our nation. Communities would be wise to look at Nova ScotiaÂ’s waste reduction success and try to emulate it in their area. With the highest waste reduction rates in Canada, Nova Scotia has reduced landfill contributions by 46% - saving about $31 million per year - simply by making the most of the organic and recyclable materials. Curbside recycling service (Blue Box) is available to 99% of its residents and 76% now enjoy curbside organic service (a. k.a. Green Box).

With better management of organic and recyclable waste, individuals do not have to put the trash out as often because the odors and volume are greatly decreased. This also means that we are consuming less plastic garbage bags. As an additional fiscal incentive, many garbage collection companies offer discounts to homes with reduced waste.

We can also help the waste management industry run more efficiently. For instance, when only full garbage bags and Blue or Green boxes are put out on the curb, the garbage truck does not have to stop as often and burn fossil fuels inefficiently while idling. (Incidentally, vehicle idling is responsible for 3% of the air pollution problem.) Similarly, by collapsing boxes before recycling we are ensuring that space is used more efficiently, thereby reducing the number of bins needed for transporting materials.

Recycling, alone, has a huge impact on the environment. A study of a 100-unit apartment building practicing maximum recycling found it would save 21.93 thirty-foot trees, 26.86 cubic yards of landfill space, 8,389 kilowatts of electricity, and 77.4 pounds of air pollution in just one year!

So you see, these seemingly small choices and efforts towards waste management really do make a difference.

-- Written by Dave and Lillian Brummet based on the concept of their new book Trash Talk. The book offers useful solutions for the individual to reduce waste and better manage resources. A guide for anyone concerned about his or her impact on the environment.

Jazz Flutist and Recording Artist Bradley Leighton Returns Home to Seattle for Concert at the Triple Door with Alive & Well to Benefit Providence Elderplace

Jazz Flutist and Recording Artist Bradley Leighton Returns Home to Seattle for Concert at the Triple Door with Alive & Well to Benefit Providence Elderplace

Jazz/pop flutist and recording artist Bradley Leighton will return to his roots in the Pacific Northwest for a benefit concert "An Evening of Smooth and Funky Grooves," Wednesday, July 20, at The Triple Door in Seattle.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) June 22, 2005

Jazz/pop flutist and recording artist Bradley Leighton will return to his roots in the Pacific Northwest for a benefit concert "An Evening of Smooth and Funky Grooves," Wednesday, July 20, at The Triple Door in Seattle. He will be joined by R&B/Funk Band Alive & Well for a special reunion performance including guest artist, jazz pianist, Deems Tsutakawa. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Providence ElderPlace. The show will begin at 7:30 pm and tickets are available at The Triple Door, 216 Union Street, 206-838-4333. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Leighton, a native of Tacoma, currently resides in San Diego and is touring this summer in support of his new CD, "Just Doin' Our Thang" (released nationally May 10, 2005, Pacific Coast Jazz), distributed exclusively by east coast firm, Big Daddy Music. The record has garnered glowing industry reviews and is getting airplay in markets around the country. Alive & Well, one of the Pacific Northwest's most popular R&B/Funk Bands for over two decades (1975-1997), will reunite for the event and will include Kurt Kolstad on drums, John Morton on guitar and Mike Jaap on keyboards.

"I used to go and listen to Alive & Well every week; much of my present style and feel was developed during that time," says Leighton. "I've been able to sit in with all these great players at one time or another. It will be good to get old friends together to make music for such a great cause." The concert also will feature an appearance by guest soloist and contemporary soul jazz pianist, Deems Tsutakawa, an old friend of Leighton's.

Later that week, Leighton, Deems and friends will play again for Providence ElderPlace – this time with golf clubs, not instruments. The "Third Annual Deems' Smooth and Fonky Golf Tournament," will be held Sunday, July 24, at Jefferson Park Golf Course, 4101 Beacon Ave. S. in Seattle. The event, which will also benefit Providence ElderPlace, is being presented by J-Town Records (Deems' record label) and sponsored by 98.9 Smooth Jazz KWJZ and Colors NW Magazine in Seattle. “We want everybody to dress fonky," says Deems, a Seattle native. "Prizes will be awarded for the fonkiest-dressed person and team!" Tickets are $90 per player and include the green fee and lunch. Advanced registration is required.

Providence ElderPlace is an innovative program that provides comprehensive services to frail, older adults, designed to support them in remaining healthy and independent in their communities as long as possible. The only program of its kind in the state of Washington, Providence ElderPlace offers a wide range of services including social work services, primary and specialized medical care, therapies, meals, housing, round trip transportation by wheel chair accessible vans, and more.

"Our goal is to keep people out of hospitals and nursing homes and integrated in their communities as long as possible," says Susan Hayashida, administrative services manager. "Over 95% of service recipients are low-income and might otherwise be living in a nursing home without our services. One of the best things about our program is our diversity. About 25 different languages are spoken between our service recipients and our staff." Hayashida thanked the musicians and sponsors who have chosen to benefit Providence ElderPlace. "A lot of generous people are donating their time to both of these wonderful events – we are very grateful," she says.

Health Advocate Ships Care Packages to Local National Guard Unit in Iraq

Health Advocate Ships Care Packages to Local National Guard Unit in Iraq

Employees collected, packed, and shipped books, magazines, snacks and other items.

Plymouth Meeting, PA (Vocus) August 25, 2009

Health Advocate, Inc., the nation’s leading independent healthcare advocacy and assistance company, has donated 26 boxes of items including shampoo, conditioner, snacks, gum, books and magazines to the 1st Battalion of the 111th Infantry of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

To commemorate the event, Sergeant Matt Cahill, of Swedesboro, N. J., and Specialist Michael King, of Philadelphia, visited Health Advocate’s Plymouth Meeting headquarters on August 4th to accept the gifts. The Plymouth Meeting-based unit, currently stationed in Iraq, received the boxes on August 10th.

“We wanted to honor the sacrifice and bravery of our armed forces, because they do so much to protect the values we enjoy everyday,” said Martin Rosen, Executive Vice President and cofounder of Health Advocate. “The fact that the unit is based just a couple of miles from our headquarters just made it a natural decision.”

The idea for the collection was spawned by Ed Hampson, a Senior Health Advocate with the company, whose son John is currently stationed in Iraq with the 1st Battalion of the 111th Infantry. The collection drive, which was planned and supervised by an activity team of Health Advocate employees (Sue Clark, Sarah Forsyth, Betty O’Reilly, Eva Zuckerkandel, and Shauna Duffin), began on July 2 and ran through July 15. Health Advocate employees were encouraged to donate supplies and money as part of a company-wide effort.

“The level of participation reflected the commitment of our employees to support our troops and the local men and women from our community who are serving our country, and that was quite wonderful,” Rosen said. “The troops deserve it.”

New Service From Philips Gives Seniors And Caregivers a Smarter Way To Reduce Medication Mistakes

New Service From Philips Gives Seniors And Caregivers a Smarter Way To Reduce Medication Mistakes

Philips introduces the Philips Medication Dispensing Service, a new family support system for the home healthcare community that helps seniors avoid medication errors caused by over-dosing or missed doses.

Framingham, MA (PRWEB) October 7, 2009

Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) today introduced the Philips Medication Dispensing Service, a new family support system for the home healthcare community that helps seniors avoid medication errors caused by over-dosing or missed doses.

Non-adherence to medication regimens has a huge impact not only on individuals but also on the healthcare industry. The National Pharmaceutical Council estimates that non-adherence to medication regimens costs more than $100 billion a year.1

Seniors, as well as other individuals with complicated drug regimens, rely on their medications to keep them healthy, but complex medication schedules can lead to forgetting doses, over - or under-dosing, as well as taking medications in dangerous combinations or at the wrong time of day. These errors can bring about unnecessary hospitalizations, progression of illness, loss of independence and even death.

The Philips Medication Dispensing Service (http://www. managemypills. com/content/) can help address the skyrocketing cost of medication non-adherence within the healthcare industry, as well as help people manage their complex medication regimens. The Medication Dispensing Service is one of the most flexible systems on the market and offers several unique features and benefits, including dispensing for 1-40 days of medication, on-demand (also called "PRN") dispensing, alerts to caregivers about missed doses, custom reports and specialized technical support through Philips Lifeline. The system simplifies daily medication management, and requires less-demanding routine involvement from caregivers.

Beverly Lawton, director, Loretto Health Support in Syracuse, N. Y., explains, "Non-adherence to a medication regimen is a perilous and pricey problem, both now and to the future of health care. The Philips Medication Dispensing Service has been great for my aging population. It is ideal for the independent senior with one or more chronic conditions who needs support with their medication schedule."

Ethel Mabe (http://www. managemypills. com/content/testimonials) in upstate New York shared their story, "My mom took four days worth of medicine in two days and wound up in the emergency room. After that, I was coming over three times a day to give her pills. With the Philips Medication Dispensing Service, I load it in no time; if she doesn't take her pill, I get a phone call and can easily ring mom with a gentle reminder. It's not only pressure off of me, but it has improved our relationship, as I'm not always harping on her about her meds. I get to be her daughter, she gets to be my mom and we all enjoy our independence."

Immunitor files application for Phase III clinical trial

Immunitor files application for Phase III clinical trial

Privately held Thai biotech company, Immunitor Corporation Co., Ltd, has submitted to the Thai FDA the application for Phase III clinical trial.

Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) February 10, 2004

Privately held Thai biotech company, Immunitor Corporation Co., Ltd, has submitted to the Thai FDA the application for Phase III clinical trial. The application is based on pending investigational R&D drug permit that was granted in 2000. The primary endpoint of the trial is aimed at confirming the beneficial property of V-1 Immunitor (V1) shown for AIDS-associated wasting. When approved, the study will be carried out by the clinical team of Dr. Orapun Metadilogkul, the President of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Association of Thailand at Rajavithi General Hospital in Bangkok – the largest public hospital of the Ministry of Public Health.

Recently published retrospective, large-scale study in 650 AIDS patients demonstrated that V1 was safe, effective, and highly promising as an inexpensive therapy for the management of opportunistic infections and AIDS-associated decline in body mass (http://www. nature. com/nature/view/040122.html#6 (http://www. nature. com/nature/view/040122.html#6)). The probability value obtained in this study (P=0.00000000000000065) indicates that obtained results were non-random and highly significant statistically. These findings support the results of open label phase I study published two years ago and of placebo-controlled phase II study completed last year.

V-1 Immunitor is an orally available therapeutic AIDS vaccine, which has been licensed in Thailand and certain countries in Africa as a dietary supplement. The vaccine elicits mucosal immune response in the gut, which appears to result in reversal of weight loss in 76% of AIDS patients. Several published clinical trials have shown that V1 is safer and cheaper than standard antiviral therapy.

The Phase III trial seeking licensure for AIDS-related wasting represents a "streamlining" of the Company's approval strategy. Obtaining drug label for such an indication is a stepping stone for Immunitor’s ongoing research program aimed at developing effective and safe vaccine for treatment and prevention of HIV."

Principal Investigator, Dr. Aldar S. Bourinbaiar, the Scientific Director of the Company, said, "Our results compare very favorably to any published results of treatment for this indication. The results we have seen are the best I've observed with this difficult-to-treat condition, which is associated with certain death. Currently available nutritional supplements or cocktail antiviral drugs known as HAART are inefficient for correction of wasting and V1 can be useful add-on option to HAART or as stand-alone therapy. Other treatment options like recombinant human growth hormone (HGH), produced by Swiss company Serono, are quite effective but they are too expensive for third world countries.”

Mr. Vichai Jirathitikal, the Chairman of the Immunitor, said, “We plan to initiate a similar Phase III multi-site trial program in four countries in Africa. Depending on ethics committees’ decision in respective countries the trials will start sometime before International AIDS Conference to be held in July of this year in Bangkok. We are especially proud that our charitable work which provided free treatment to more than 40,000 AIDS patients in Thailand and other developing countries led to the nomination of the Company for 2004 Bill Gates Award in Global Health.”

Alzheimer's Foundation of America Congratulates Senate on Passage of Healthcare Reform

Alzheimer's Foundation of America Congratulates Senate on Passage of Healthcare Reform

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) congratulates all members of the United States Senate who voted today to pass The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. AFA believes the historic act includes several provisions that will be particularly helpful to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and their family caregivers, including home-based coordinated care for high-cost Medicare beneficiaries with two or more chronic conditions, and inclusion of "detection of any cognitive impairment" in the new annual wellness exam for Medicare beneficiaries.

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 24, 2009

The following is a statement by Eric J. Hall, president and chief executive officer of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), in response to the United States Senate's passage today of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act:

"On behalf of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), and our more than 1,200 member organizations, we congratulate United States Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT), Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA) and all members of the United States Senate who voted to pass The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

"AFA believes The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act includes several provisions that will be particularly helpful to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and their family caregivers. We supported these provisions from the beginning of the Senate's effort and are grateful to see them included in the final bill:"

"Independence at Home Act demonstration provides home-based coordinated care for high-cost Medicare beneficiaries with two or more chronic conditions, which studies show can reduce healthcare expenditures, improve quality of care and enhance health outcomes.

"Inclusion of 'detection of any cognitive impairment' in the new annual wellness exam for Medicare beneficiaries is a new and much-needed benefit for early identification of memory problems or Alzheimer's disease and related dementias."

"Direct care training funding over three years will help to establish new training opportunities for direct care workers that provide long-term care services and supports."

"Geriatric workforce provisions authorize funding to geriatric education centers to support training in geriatrics, chronic care management and long-term care for faculty in health professions schools and family caregivers; develop curricula and best practices in geriatrics; expand the geriatric career awards to advanced practice nurses, clinical social workers, pharmacists and psychologists; and establish traineeships for individuals who are preparing for advanced education nursing degrees in geriatric nursing."

"The Nursing Home Transparency Act enhances American families' access to information about the quality of care in nearly 16,000 nursing homes that receive $75 billion a year in Medicare and Medicaid funds, and will improve the government's ability to ensure quality care and better-trained staff at those facilities."

"Background checks in long-term care facilities for employees with direct-patient access give families greater assurance that their loved ones are safe because it will require these employees to pass a background check for previous criminal activity and abuse."

"The Elder Justice Act strengthens the network of agencies that investigate abuse and neglect in facilities and in the community, including improving the training of long-term care ombudsmen and state health inspectors, requiring reporting of neglect and abuse, and ensuring that residents are protected when nursing homes close."

"The CLASS Act creates a disability insurance program financed through voluntary payroll deductions for adults who become unable to perform at least two activities of daily living, and provides a much-needed benefit to help obtain services and supports, while providing disabled individuals more choices and opportunities to live and participate in their communities."

"In addition, AFA was proud to support Senator Sherrod Brown's (D-OH) amendment that prohibits insurers from dropping coverage because an individual chooses to participate in a clinical trial and from denying coverage for routine care that they would otherwise provide just because an individual is enrolled in a clinical trial for the treatment of life-threatening diseases. AFA was one of 85 organizations and the only Alzheimer's disease-related group that supported this amendment."

"We congratulate the Senate for its historic vote, and we look forward to working with members of the Senate and House of Representatives as the process moves forward to final passage of health reform."

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) is a national nonprofit organization headquartered in New York and made up of more than 1,200 member organizations nationwide that provide hands-on programs to meet the educational, emotional, practical and social needs of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, and their families. AFA's services include a toll-free hot line, counseling, educational materials, a free caregiver magazine and professional training. New Era of Brain Surgery Underway at New Jersey Hospital

New Era of Brain Surgery Underway at New Jersey Hospital

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, is one of just a handful of hospitals in the nation to obtain the Polestar N-20 Intraoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (iMRI) system, the most advanced intraoperative MRI system currently available.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (PRWEB) August 5, 2004

Robert Wood Johnson University HospitalÂ’s advanced services in neurology and neurosurgery have expanded with the acquisition of breakthrough imaging technology for patients requiring brain surgery.

RWJUH is one of just a handful of hospitals in the nation to obtain the Polestar N-20 Intraoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (iMRI) system, the most advanced intraoperative MRI system currently available.

This technology sets a new standard of care for the treatment of brain tumors, pituitary lesions, congenital disorders and Epilepsy, promising better surgical outcomes and faster recoveries.

The uniqueness of the Polestar N-20 lies in its compactness, which enables neurosurgeons to bring it right into the operating room for real-time visualization of the brain during all stages of surgery.

In conventional brain surgery, neurosurgeons rely on MRI images taken before surgery. The limitation of this practice is that the brain’s anatomy – including the precise location of tumors – can shift during the progress of surgery, making images taken prior to the procedure out of date.

The iMRI technology solves that problem by providing surgeons with a constant stream of fresh images right in the operating room.

“This technology brings the MRI room into the operating room,” said Michael Nosko, MD, Ph. D., Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “By allowing surgeons to view images during the actual operation, this new MRI improves patient safety and surgical outcomes. It also shows the commitment of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to improving the lives of patients by giving them access to the latest technology.”

In addition to its compactness, the iMRI also provides exceptional image quality. This image quality lets clinicians plan the best approach for reaching tumors and lesions. It also enables surgeons to more clearly see tumors and lesions, as well as the margins between healthy and unhealthy tissue. With this clearer visualization, and real-time imaging, surgeons can confirm that a tumor has been removed, safely and entirely, while patients are still in the operating room, rather than subjecting patients to additional operation for residual tumors that are detected in a post-operative MRI.

“With the Polestar N20, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is setting a new standard of care in one of the most delicate areas of surgery,” said Dr. Nosko. “This is a powerful tool that enables neurosurgeons to be more accurate and more thorough. The end result is better outcomes for patients.”

Robert Wood Johnson University HospitalÂ’s highly regarded neurosurgery program provides comprehensive treatment for a full-range of neurological disorders in both adults and children.

The Clinical Neurosciences Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is a partnership of RWJUH and UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School dedicated to research, medical and surgical treatment of neurological disorders, and offering extensive clinical programs in neurology, neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology.
