Noise Induced Hearing Loss: Prevalent & Preventable

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) incurred through increased noise level in the workplace, recreationally, and at home, is a major health hazard of todayÂ’s lifestyle.

Cranbury, NJ (PRWEB) April 9, 2004

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 30 million Americans are exposed to hazardous noise at work. Of those, more than 10 million risk permanent hearing loss through continuous exposure. “Work-related hearing loss is one of the most common occupational diseases in the United States,” says Dr. Linda Rosenstock, director of NIOSH.

Recreational and household noises can also cause Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). When exposed to harmful sounds--sounds that are too loud or loud sounds over a long time-- the inner ear can be damaged, causing NIHL. Prolonged exposure to noise of just 90 decibels (similar to a motorcycle or lawn mower) can be enough to cause hearing loss.

Best prevention of NIHL: awareness of its causes, proactively using ear protection, recognizing the symptoms of hearing loss, and being receptive to seeking treatment if warranted.
