Parity Urges Women To Move Into IT

Parity Urges Women To Move Into IT

The industry is still failing to recruit and retain women says Parity.

(PRWEB) May 19, 2006

Parity’s recent research into ‘The Changing IT Worker Profile’ shows firms are less reliant on IT operational and programming staff with greater emphasis on obtaining and retaining project and programme management (http://www. parity/training/projectmanagement) and business analyst skills.

Parity (http://www. parity. net) believes that companies are missing a chromosome with the lack of women moving into IT. This is supported by the fact that some 84% of candidates working through Parity are male. David Plummer, Managing Director, Parity Resources says, “Companies need to do more to attract, recruit and retain staff, particularly women in IT. We have seen an increase in salaries for roles with business skills compared with those IT operations roles, due to demand.”

A survey published by IT suppliers’ body Intellect reveals that 49% of women feel they are unequal in the pay stakes. Parity believes that more needs to be done to attract and retain women into IT and is advising organisations on how they can recruit and retain top talent and motivate women to strive for higher status within IT by offering a structured Training Career and Work-Life Balance Programme.

“Creating a culture within an organisation that encourages flexible working is crucial to attracting and retaining talent in the industry,” continues Plummer. “With the continuous evolution of technologies, it is also crucial that companies offer a structured Training programme for staff, this is a key factor to retaining employees in IT.”

Claire O’Sullivan, who is currently on assignment through Parity comments, “I chose a career in IT after leaving school and have not looked back. IT contracting is the ideal choice for me. It is nice to have the flexibility that contracting offers in terms of choosing who I work for and where I am located. Contracting also gives me the experience to work on different technologies and I find that, compared to permanent roles, I am more in at the deep-end and I am given the opportunity to work on the latest technologies. I would advise women to seriously consider IT as a career.”

Denver, CO (PRWEB) May 16, 2007

KnowWare International Inc. announces the addition of a capability analyzer to the QI Macros SPC (statistical process control) software for Excel. Manufacturers seeking to measure the quality of their product can now analyze up to eight characteristics for a single part simultaneously. KnowWare has also created a standalone dashboard including control charts, histograms and a normal probability plot for each of the eight characteristics.

Cp is a measure between 0 and 2 that evaluates how well the manufactured parts will fit between the customer's specification limits. A Cp measure of 1.0 equates to 3 sigma; 1.33 equals 4 sigma; 1.66 equals 5-sigma; and 2.0 equals the infamous Six Sigma. Cpk measures how well the product is centered between the limits. The Cp and Cpk tool also measures Pp and Ppk which are measures of total process performance.

The QI Macros are an add-in for Microsoft Excel that automate all of the charts and diagrams required for statistical process control (SPC) and Lean Six Sigma. There are over 70,000 registered users. The QI Macros are used by over 2,700 hospitals and medical centers to hold down costs and increase health care quality. The QI Macros consist of three parts:

1. Macros that use existing Excel data to create 18 different charts: line, run, pareto, control charts, and histograms.

2. Fill-in-the-blank templates, over 40 in all, for flowcharts and fishbones, design of experiments (DOE), quality function deployment (QFD), and GageR&R studies.

3. Statistical analysis tools like ANOVA, f-test, regression, and a sample size calculator.

Unlike complex statistical tools, the QI Macros tools can be used by anyone from nurses to Six Sigma Black Belts. Users most often say that the QI Macros are:

·Easy to learn. The pull-down menu gives immediate access to all tools.

·Works directly on Excel data. Over 90% of the world's offices use Excel. With the QI

Macros, there is no need to transfer the data out of Excel. Just select and go.

·Automates the most commonly used Improvement tools.

Readers can also sign up for a free email course on Lean Six Sigma, read testimonials and download a 30-day evaluation copy of the QI Macros for Excel at www. qimacros. com.

Micro Grants From Psych Central Community Connection Provide Assistance to Those in Need

Micro Grants From Psych Central Community Connection Provide Assistance to Those in Need

Psych Central Community Connection is a new non-profit that enables members to receive up to $500 in micro grants to assist in overcoming temporary financial hardships. More information is available at http://www. PsychCentral. org.

Newburyport, MA (PRWEB) January 12, 2010

Today Dr. John Grohol, Psy. D., announced that Psych Central Community Connection, Inc. (http://www. PsychCentral. org (http://www. PsychCentral. org)) has been officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the Internal Revenue Service. Psych Central Community Connection provides assistance for members in need with unexpected emergencies in life and is the first of its kind to be established by a mental health site. To qualify, individuals submit grant applications to explain the emergency need. A review committee then reviews the applications and disbursements are made of up to $500 each once the basic guidelines are met.

“This can mean the difference between warmth in the winter or whether or not there’s food on the table,” said Dr. John Grohol, Psy. D., founder and CEO of Psych Central, and President of the new nonprofit. “We are not only here to help people out financially, but also emotionally, to help them make it through the tough times."

Psych Central’s Community Connection grew out of the Psych Central online community’s successful efforts with past member-based fund drives. To date, more than $7,000 has already been distributed to individual members in need. Those funds have helped cover heating and electricity bills, food assistance and other critical items by which members have been confronted.

“My husband lost his job in July this year. We had no savings to fall back on,” said Psych Central member ‘bebop.’ “I finally decided I had to swallow my pride and gain my courage to ask [Psych Central Community Connection] for help. It got me though two months with food and other things I had to get that my disability would not afford me. I am eternally grateful and very humbled by the outpouring of love,” she said.

"These micro grants are meant as lifelines to individuals in our community," noted Dr. Grohol. "I was surprised to learn how difficult it can be to obtain local assistance for an immediate need. While other mental health nonprofits are focused on the big picture, we're focused on the local picture – people who can be helped by a micro grant."

Psych Central Community Connection, Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) public charity setup for the benefit of members of the Psych Central community. It relies on the generosity of donations from fellow members as well as from others who want to help make a difference for individuals who have mental health concerns.

People are encouraged to join the Psych Central community at http://forums. psychcentral. com (http://forums. psychcentral. com) and donate to the program (information is available at http://www. psychcentral. org (http://www. psychcentral. org)). Psych Central typically matches funds contributed by others on a 1:1 basis in order to encourage development of the assistance program.

Psych Central is the leading destination for online mental health and psychology information, community, and support. Founded in 1995, Psych Central was selected by TIME Magazine as one of the 50 Best Web sites with its original articles, news content, community, research briefs, ratings and reviews of medications and treatments, and Dr. John Grohol’s popular “World of Psychology” blog. Today, the site is visited by more than 1 million people worldwide monthly.

Skincare Shopping on a Budget: Understanding Smart & Fair Trade Skin Care

Skincare Shopping on a Budget: Understanding Smart & Fair Trade Skin Care

Fair Trade skincare has many benefits. They go beyond younger-looking skin, and can impact everything from the quality of the products we buy to the quality of life in developing countries.

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) April 17, 2009

It's hard to believe that the simple act of purchasing skincare could help end global poverty. But the fact is that it can -- when people buy products made with fairly-traded ingredients. Skincare-News. com's latest article, "The Benefits of Fair Trade Skincare," discusses what everybody should know about the advantages of Fair Trade.

Http://skincare-news. com/a-2363-The_Benefits_of_Buying_Fair_Trade_Skincare. aspx (http://skincare-news. com/a-2363-The_Benefits_of_Buying_Fair_Trade_Skincare. aspx)

Changing the face of skincare

It wasn't long ago that the term "Fair Trade" seemed exclusive to coffee imports. Today, however, Fair Trade Certified ™ labels are popping up on everything from shampoos to moisturizers to body butters.

Driving the trend is consumer demand. According to Organic Monitor, a research and consulting company that specializes in the international organic industry, Fair Trade "is catching on as it enables cosmetic products to be marketed on ethical values, attracting consumers concerned about social inequality and sustainability."

The sales figures agree. In 2007 alone, global sales of Fair Trade cosmetics increased by a staggering 47 percent, according to Organic Monitor. And with the benefits it holds for farm workers, the environment and the consumer, we can expect more growth to come.

Empowering developing communities

If there's one word that sums up the concept of Fair Trade, it's "empowerment." By ensuring that farmers receive a fair wage for their goods, Fair Trade prevents worker exploitation and helps disadvantaged communities pull themselves out of poverty. Paul Rice, President and CEO of TransFair USA, a third party certifier of Fair Trade products, tells ABC News that Fair Trade can bring farmers two to three times the earnings they'd receive in local markets.

But price is only part of it. When people purchase fairly-traded skincare, they're also supporting vital principles like:

Humane working conditions, including laws to prohibit child labor. Direct trade, so that farmers can cut out the middleman and develop direct relationships with purchasers. Community development, where farmers invest back in their communities to improve the level of healthcare, nutrition, education and training available to their people. Protecting precious resources

As much as Fair Trade is about protecting workers, it's also about protecting the environment. To earn certification on their products, farmers need to adhere to strict environmental standards.

According to TransFair USA, harmful chemicals are prohibited "in favor of environmentally sustainable farming methods that protect famers' health and preserve valuable ecosystems for future generations."

And farmers have every reason to take sustainability seriously. On top of fair prices, they also receive financial incentives for soil and water conservation efforts and for promoting environmental education within their communities.

Bringing quality to the consumer

Many believe that buying fair trade skincare means safer, better products. Because ingredients are grown to meet eco-friendly criteria, and producers are paid enough to forego cost-cutting measures, consumers are assured a top-quality product.

In addition, many Fair Trade products are also certified organic. Because organic skincare excludes synthetic materials, pesticides and other harsh materials, it's believed that the body metabolizes these ingredients more effectively than conventional products.

Importantly, however, keep in mind that organic ingredients can still irritate the skin and many conventional skincare ingredients, like retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids have years of research to substantiate their safety and efficacy.

When selecting Fair Trade skincare, the best bet is to read the label----on both organic and non-organic products----in order to know precisely the ingredients the product contains.

Paving the way for a larger selection

While cosmetic companies are responding to consumer demand, retailer shelves aren't exactly overflowing with Fair Trade options. Part of the problem is that there are only so many certified Fair Trade ingredients available----and only a few of them are appropriate for use in skincare. Vanilla, shea butter, honey and cocoa are a few.

But there are more options on the horizon. According to FLO International, a standards and certification organization, "new product development is a very important issue for the future of Fair Trade."

New Federal Training Grant to Teach Doctors/Scientists Immunology

New Federal Training Grant to Teach Doctors/Scientists Immunology

The Schneider Children's Hospital (SCH) campus of The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research has been awarded a prestigious $795,000 federal grant to hire and train the next generation of immunologists who will investigate diseases of the immune system to provide cutting-edge care to patients.

Manhasset, NY (Vocus) August 21, 2009

The Schneider Children's Hospital (SCH) campus of The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research has been awarded a prestigious $795,000 federal grant to hire and train the next generation of immunologists who will investigate diseases of the immune system to provide cutting-edge care to patients.

The new federal "T32" training grant, to be funded over the next five years by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, will allow Vincent Bonagura, MD, chief of pediatric immunology at SCH and a researcher at the Feinstein Institute, to train physicians to understand the basic immunobiology of the immune system and how it is involved in causing or preventing a myriad of diseases.

"This T32 grant, the first ever received by the North Shore-LIJ Health System, is significant because it's a national recognition of the major clinical and research expertise that Schneider Children's Hospital and the Feinstein Institute have in the area of immunology," said Arthur Klein, MD, senior vice president of children's services for the North Shore-LIJ Health System, and the executive director and chief of staff at SCH.

Physician/scientists selected for the new program will be able to spend time in any of the Feinstein Institute's various immunology labs. "They will have access to pediatric and adult patients who receive care for immunology-related diseases at Schneider Children's Hospital, North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center, along with patients cared for in other subspecialties that are related by the common language of immunology," said Dr. Bonagura. He added that there are an increasing number of immune-related disciplines -- including allergy, rheumatology, infectious diseases, cancers and autoimmune diseases -- that are in need of physicians and scientists trained in basic-science immunology who can expand our knowledge of the immune pathogenesis of these diseases, and provide novel and more effective therapies to treat patients.

"We need to train true academic doctors who will be able to advance the field," said Dr. Bonagura. The physician/scientist can also extend their training by applying for a fourth year within the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine (http://www. elmezzigraduateschool. org). The graduate school, part of the Feinstein Institute and the North Shore-LIJ Health System, trains physicians interested in becoming scientists as well. At the end of three years of training in the immunology physician/scientist program, students can earn a PhD degree in molecular medicine by completing a fourth year in the program.

Candidates for the immunology physician scientist training program will be drawn from a yearly complement of more than 110 pediatricians and internists applying for fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology Residency Training Program at Schneider Children's Hospital and LIJ Medical Center.

In addition to being chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Schneider Children's Hospital, Dr. Bonagura is associate chair of pediatrics at SCH, and is currently a director of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and Member of the American Board of Pediatrics. Betty Diamond, MD, director of the Feinstein's Center for Autoimmune and Musculoskeletal Diseases will be the co-director of the T32 Immunology Physician Scientist program. Dr. Diamond is an expert on rheumatic diseases, and focuses her attention on the brain problems associated with lupus.

The federal training grant fits with the mission of the Feinstein to discover and understand the causes and underlying mechanisms of human diseases, and to rapidly translate this information into diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for patients. Dr. Bonagura's lab focuses on human host defense mechanisms made against human papillomaviruses.

Concert to Benefit Disease Prevention in Hawaii

Concert to Benefit Disease Prevention in Hawaii

A concert by Rosalina Vega, new to the gospel scene, will be held in Honolulu to promote her new album, He is Here, to help raise funds to reverse the trend of chronic disease in Hawaii. Featuring Bob Silverman, former pianist for the Heritage Singers, the promoters boast that this will be a music event of unparalleled proportions.

Honolulu, HI (PRWEB) February 19, 2009

A concert to benefit health education and disease prevention in Hawaii will be held at 6 PM on Saturday, February 28 at the Honolulu Central Seventh-day Adventist church by Rosalina Vega, a gospel artist that promoters are calling the "New Sound in Christian Music." The concert comes as part of Vega's Hawaiian tour to promote her new album, "He is Here" which, according to Arnie Suntag, the album's executive producer, is being used to help raise funds to educate the public about chronic disease and to further the gospel message.

"Chronic disease is rampant in Hawaii," says Suntag. "Many are dying needlessly from diseases such as diabetes, and this can be prevented or overcome by diet and lifestyle changes. We will only win the battle against chronic disease by educating the public about the link between diet and disease and by helping them to make informed choices about the foods they eat."

The concert, sponsored by Walk of Faith, a health and lifestyle education program and community outreach in Kohala on the Big Island, is the last in a series of concerts performed by Vega on her Hawaiian tour. Suntag, who is also the program director for Walk of Faith, calls the concert a "major event in Christian music." He says that many will be pleasantly surprised by Vega's style and message. "This is not run-of-the-mill Christian music by any means," says Suntag. "The songs to be performed by Rosalina, a few of which are from the new album, are truly powerful and unique and will leave many with tears of joy in their eyes." The concert will be taped by Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) for later broadcast.

The concert will also feature Bob Silverman, former pianist and arranger for the Heritage Singers. Silverman has performed throughout the world. He has appeared on TBN, 3ABN, and other major television networks.

Vega expressed enthusiasm about her new album and the upcoming concert, stating that she has dedicated her life to helping others find a real faith in God. "We are going through very difficult times right now where we all need to take a closer look at ourselves and how we are living our lives," says Vega. "It is my earnest hope that, through the music, many will open up their hearts to God's presence and make changes that will help them to find peace, hope, and ultimately salvation."

The songs from Vega's album feature the piano and arranging of Michael Andrews, pianist and arranger for the television series "It is Written," with Shawn Boonstra. "The album was a joint effort by the entire team to produce something of real value that would make a difference in the lives of others," says Suntag. "It is our hope that proceeds from CD sales and concerts will help us reach many more throughout Hawaii and reverse the trend of disease that is devastating our loved ones."

He is Here is available on many of the Internet's major retailers and at select stores. For more information on the album and the upcoming concert, visit www. rosalinavega. com or call 888-468-6921.

Madison County Mississippi Gymnast Defends State Championship Title with Help from Baptist Physical Therapy & Sportscare

Madison County Mississippi Gymnast Defends State Championship Title with Help from Baptist Physical Therapy & Sportscare

Kaity Messer battles back from torn rotator cuff injury and defends state championship

(PRWEB) September 1, 2004

Kaity Messer's introduction to gymnastics started before she could walk. As she watched her sister Emily practice gymnastics at home, Kaity would twist and turn, too. At age three, Kaity began formal training.

By the time she was a teenager, this Madison, Miss. resident had won the Level 9 State Championship twice, and in 2003, she was the defending Level 10 State Champion. But an unfortunate shoulder injury on April 10, 2003 made it questionable if she would ever be able to compete again, let alone successfully defend her title.

While practicing a new gymnastic skill, Kaity suffered a 90 percent tear of her rotator cuff, causing a multi-directional instability. But this type of injury didn't stop Kaity from focusing on her love for competitive gymnastics. She's had 2 leg fractures and numerous sprains, and she has always battled back.

"Kaitlyn is extremely focused and strong willed and has learned that hard work has its reward," said her father Jim Messer, who is a perfusionist in Cardiac Surgery at Baptist. "This was not going to get her down."

On April 30, 2003, Dr. Felix Savoie with Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Clinic performed surgery. Kaity had rotator cuff repair to correct the multi-directional instability. Previously, she couldn't move her shoulder/arm at all without pain and/or dislocation. By June 2003, she started physical therapy at Baptist.

Robbin Lee, a Baptist physical therapist, and the entire staff at the Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic worked with Kaity to tailor the rehab process that would optimize her functional outcome.

"This was done by stabilization exercises progressing toward motion oriented stabilization as well as exercises designed to allow impact on the shoulder itself. Kaity would also complete stretching exercises independently, maintaining and promoting flexibility of the joint and musculature itself. She was motivated to progress, but she didn't throw caution to the wind like a lot of people," Lee said. "She was careful not to go too fast. She was just a model patient."

She finished physical therapy in August 2003 and resumed limited gymnastic workouts in October. By January 2004, Kaity began some competitions again. In March 2004, she defended her State Champion title of 1st Place All Around Level 10 (15 y/o and older division).

"The therapists at Baptist developed a regimen specifically tailored to Kaity's needs. Their encouragement and genuine concern has allowed Kaity to return to competitive gymnastics," Jim Messer added.

Nowadays, you can find this 17-year-old right where you'd expect--the gym, where she practices approximately 20 hours per week. She will begin her senior year at Madison Central this fall.

Kentucky Proposed Smoking Ban Bill Going Nowhere

Kentucky Proposed Smoking Ban Bill Going Nowhere

When lawmakers don’t want to deal with tough issues like jobs creation and balanced budgets, they turn to proposing things like smoking bans and, in the process, continue to proliferate false information and misunderstandings regarding the economic and health-related impacts of such legislation, according to the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association. A bill has been introduced in the Kentucky state legislature seeking to impose a no-exception smoking ban in all indoor workplaces and public places, including bars and restaurants.

Frankfort, Kentucky (Vocus/PRWEB) January 12, 2011

When lawmakers don’t want to deal with tough issues like jobs creation and balanced budgets, they turn to proposing things like smoking bans and, in the process, continue to proliferate false information and misunderstandings regarding the economic and health-related impacts of such legislation, according to the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association.

A bill has been introduced in the Kentucky state legislature by Rep. Susan Westrom of Lexington seeking to impose a no-exception smoking ban in all indoor workplaces and public places, including bars and restaurants. Westrom admits the bill will go nowhere in this year’s legislature but has proposed it, nonetheless. Currently, in Kentucky, state laws prohibit smoking in government offices, universities, and the state capitol, except in designated smoking areas.

“Kentucky unemployment is nearly 11 percent, yet some legislators seem to be more interested in creating job-killing bills like smoking bans which take away property owners’ constitutional rights to determine for themselves if smoking should be allowed in their places of business,” said Chris McCalla, legislative director of the IPCPR, an association of some 2,000 neighborhood mom-and-pop premium cigar retailers, manufacturers and distributors.

Some $300,000 of federal stimulus money has been used to finance anti-smoking efforts in Kentucky instead of job creation, according to Jim Waters, vice president of policy and communications for the Bluegrass Institute, an independent free-market think tank.

Waters also has reported that “the ‘science’ behind the economic effect of a smoking ban is questionable at best and dishonest at worst,” according to Ken Moellman, a spokesman for Northern Kentucky Choice.

“The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis has shown that government-imposed smoking bans exact a negative economic impact on businesses frequented by smokers,” wrote Waters in a July post. (http://www. bipps. org/article. php/2378)

Regarding the health implications related to secondhand smoke, McCalla cited a post by Dr. Michael Siegel, an anti-smoking advocate and professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at Boston University’s School of Public Health. Despite his stance against smoking, generally, Dr. Siegel has been highly critical of many claims about secondhand smoke, including those made by the Kentucky Center for Smoke-Free Policy at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing.

According to Dr. Siegel, the statements he called “outright lies” include the following: “Even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can trigger a heart attack … (and) after two hours of secondhand smoke exposure, the heart rate speeds up and leads to abnormal heart rhythms (which can lead to death).”

Dr. Siegel also wrote that no evidence exists to support claims by the current Surgeon General that even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can cause (a) heart attack and that inhaling even the smallest amount of tobacco smoke can … lead to cancer. National Public Health Leader Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith to Speak About Youth Violence at the 2006 Givens NOMMO Forum

National Public Health Leader Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith to Speak About Youth Violence at the 2006 Givens NOMMO Forum

The Givens Foundation for African American Literature presents the 2006 Givens NOMMO Forum featuring Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith to speak about youth violence and ways to arm and educate communities on its prevention from a public health stand point. The lecture and book signing will take place on January 25, 2006 at the University of Minnesota Humphrey Institute for Public Health at 7:00 P. M.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) December 29, 2005

The Givens Foundation for African American Literature Presents: The Givens NOMMO Forum Series featuring nationally recognized public health leader, Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith on Wednesday, January 25 at the University of Minnesota - Humphrey Institute for Public Affairs.

According to the 2004 Populations of Color in Minnesota Health Status Report, the leading cause of African American male deaths between the ages of 15 and 24 was homicide, which was also the second leading cause of death in females of the same age group. Prothrow-Stith's efforts to have youth violence defined as a public health problem forces society to take a harder look at the causes of violence and its prevention. The lecture and book signing entitled "Deadly Consequences: Community Strategies for Decreasing Youth Violence" will not only speak to this issue, but will explore approaches that will solve problems and lead to successful outcomes in education.

Dr. Prothrow-Stith began her career as a physician in inner-city Boston. In 1987 she was appointed as the first woman Commissioner of Public Health for Massachusetts under Governor Dukakis. There she established the first Office of Violence Prevention in a state department of public health. In 1995 President Bill Clinton appointed her to the National Commission on Crime Control and Prevention. Currently Dr. Prothrow-Stith serves as Associate Dean for Faculty Development as well as Director and Professor of the Division of Public Health Practice at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her books, "Murder is No Accident: Understanding and Preventing Youth Violence in America" (Jossey-Bass, 2004) and "Sugar and Spice and No Longer Nice: How We Can Stop Girls Violence" (Jossey-Bass, 2005) have provided communities nationwide with valuable resources on how to combat youth violence.

"The Givens Foundation is excited to have Dr. Prothrow-Stith as our first speaker for this year's NOMMO series. Her expertise and viewpoint of youth violence are truly an avant-garde way of looking at such a wide-spread problem not only in the African American community, but in all of our communities nation wide," says President Archie Givens Jr.

Sponsored in part by the University of Minnesota and General Mills Foundation, the Givens NOMMO Forum is a public series designed to explore divergent perspectives on issues relevant to the African American community through the experience of "nommo," a Swahili translation meaning the magic power of the word. The 2006 Forum is entitled "Shaping Our Destiny: From Words to Action" and will focus on educating and parenting our children.

About the Givens Foundation

The mission of the Givens Foundation is to enrich and celebrate African American literature and writers. The Givens Foundation for African American Literature was established in 1972 as the Archie & Phebe Mae Givens Foundation. Its original purpose was to provide scholarships to African American students. The Foundation's focus shifted in 1985 when the Givens family worked with the Twin Cities African American community to purchase a 3,000 piece collection of African American literature-one of the most important collections of its kind in the nation. Since then, the Archie Givens Sr. Collection of African American Literature housed at the University of Minnesota Library has inspired and supported the Foundation's efforts. Today the Givens Foundation produces a range of events, publications, and programs such as the NOMMO Forum, Givens Classics Book Series, Children's Literature Symposiums, and a K-12 residency program entitled "Spirited Minds and Strong Souls Singing" which places literary artists into Twin Cities Metro Area classrooms engaging students in arts-based writing and reading. Motion Media Solutions Wins Prestigious Award for DVD on Homeless Services

Motion Media Solutions Wins Prestigious Award for DVD on Homeless Services

The 2005 Communicator Award of Distinction has gone to "Stewpot", a DVD produced by Motion Media Solutions for a church ministry in Dallas supporting the homeless.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 26, 2006

Motion Media Solutions has won the 2005 Communicator Award of Distinction in the External Communications/Non-Profit category for "Stewpot", a DVD it produced for a ministry of First Presbyterian Church in Dallas. The award recognizes "Stewpot" as a project exceeding industry standards in production and communication skills.

"The staff and board are so grateful for Motion Media Solutions' work," said Rev. Dr. Bruce Buchanan, Director of the Stewpot. "We anticipated a difficult fundraising year, but with this DVD, we were able to raise public awareness to a new level. This was especially significant in a year where we saw such a huge increase in homelessness and poverty due to Katrina and Rita."

"It was a privilege working with one of the most respected non-profit institutions in Dallas as it celebrated its 30-year anniversary of serving the homeless," said Ross Mason, CEO of Motion Media Solutions. "Our DVD communicated that the Stewpot is much more than just a soup kitchen."

First Presbyterian Church began this ministry (Stewpot. org) in 1975, and "Stewpot" was released in October at the anniversary dinner attended by over 450, raising over $130,000. The DVD has been used at other recognition events, which helped to meet annual budget needs of $1.3 million, a 6% increase over 2004! The Stewpot will continue to use the DVD as an effective communication tool. It features many of the services provided, including FREE voicemail and postal services, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health, medical and dental services, identification and employment services. It also illustrates the many programs available for children.

Motion Media Solutions worked closely with the Stewpot staff on a creative strategy and script, capturing many hours of video over several weeks, and designing graphics to complement how the organization is portrayed.

"We were honored to receive the award", said Mr. Mason. "It demonstrates that great video can be created for organizations like Stewpot, helping them communicate their story cost-effectively...increasing funding and local participation."

Motion Media Solutions produces educational, inspiring and motivating programs for churches, non-profit organizations and foundations.

New Report Focuses On Economic Toll Of Child Hunger

New Report Focuses On Economic Toll Of Child Hunger

Findings highlight long term physical and cognitive consequences.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 1, 2009

The direct and indirect effect of child hunger in the U. S. is a contributing factor to the nation's economic woes and puts America at a competitive disadvantage, according to a new report issued today by Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization.

Child Food Insecurity: The Economic Impact On Our Nation, a report on research on the impact of food insecurity and hunger on child health, growth and development, details the economic effect of child hunger in the United States. It articulates the lifelong consequences child food insecurity has on individuals and families. (Food insecurity is defined as the lack of access at times to enough food for an active, healthy life; or limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods.)

The report states that the U. S. economy is losing its competitive edge to countries doing a better job of addressing nutrition and food insecurity in preparing children to learn and achieve their full potential. The report was funded with a grant from the ConAgra Foods Foundation.

"Child hunger is robbing us of the best of America's imagination and ingenuity," said the report's author, John Cook, Ph. D., of the Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine, a nationally-recognized expert on child hunger. "Sustainable economic recovery depends on freeing children of the burden of hunger and malnutrition and supporting their optimal growth and development."

"The impact of child hunger is more far reaching than one might anticipate. Child food insecurity creates billions of dollars in costs to our society. Child hunger affects a child's health, education and job readiness," said Cook. "Our best universities are graduating more students from other countries and fewer from the U. S. because we are failing to prepare our children to learn and develop their best skills, creativity and abilities."

According to the USDA, 12.4 million American children -- one in six--are food insecure. One in five children under the age of five live at risk of hunger in 13 states.

"This is the first report to show the direct, tax-payer burden inflicted by child hunger - along with a clear link to long-term impacts, such as life-time earnings and the ripple effects through our economy," said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America. "It calls into question whether ongoing economic recovery can be sustained if child hunger is not eliminated; we can only achieve a prosperous future for all Americans if we ensure, right now, that all children have access to enough nutritious food for active, healthy lives."

"It is also important to note in this context, however, that the Federal Government plays a very significant role in providing food to children at risk of hunger. The recent stimulus bills and increases in funding for USDA nutrition programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program), and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) have made great strides in ensuring that more low-income children and their families have increased access to food. The Federal Government is the largest provider of food to at-risk children," Escarra said.

Child Food Insecurity: The Economic Impact On Our Nation explains how a hungry child becomes a diminished adult, and a burden to society. Some of the report's summary findings include:

Child hunger first causes health problems: Hungry children are sick more often, more likely to be hospitalized, and to suffer physical, emotional and developmental impairment.

Child hunger then creates educational problems: Under-nutrition before the age of three fundamentally changes the neurological architecture of the brain and central nervous system, harming a child's ability to learn. Hungry children have lower academic achievement.

Child hunger leads to workforce and job readiness problems: Adults who experienced hunger as children are not well prepared mentally, emotionally, physically or socially to perform in contemporary work environments. Child hunger leads to greater absenteeism and turnover in the work place.

"The report's sobering statistics serve as a wake-up call to the price we pay when even one child goes hungry in the United States," said Chris Kircher, president, ConAgra Foods Foundation. "Through our partnership with Feeding America on this research, we're building on ConAgra's long-standing commitment to raise awareness of the issue of child hunger and keep it at the forefront of the national agenda to inspire action."

The ConAgra Foods Foundation also partnered with Feeding America to recently publish the first-ever, state-by-state analysis of child food insecurity and hunger. ConAgra Foods' 15-year partnership with Feeding America is the largest corporate initiative solely dedicated to fighting child hunger. The company has donated more than $27 million and more than 200 million pounds of food to Feeding America since 1993.

"Knowledge is as powerful as food in the fight against child hunger," added Escarra. "The ConAgra Foods Foundation deserves credit for understanding this. Their leadership in this area is an example of how the private sector can mobilize resources to heighten public awareness and perception of the interrelated issues, root causes and effects of child hunger. Their efforts make us all stronger advocates, and are critical to helping us all find sustainable solutions to this problem."

Dr. Cook concludes, "There has not been adequate attention paid to the role child food insecurity plays in impeding economic growth. This report clearly makes the case that children are a fundamental engine of growth in the economy, and all children in the U. S. must be adequately nourished. If we fail, not only does the child suffer, but our society does as well."

InfraWare Unveils First Draft Dictation Recognition 2011, Advanced Automated Speech Recognition

InfraWare Unveils First Draft Dictation Recognition 2011, Advanced Automated Speech Recognition

New Release of First Draft Delivers the Accuracy, Flexibility, and Features to Make Medical Dictation and Editing Easier than Ever

Terre Haute, IN (PRWEB) December 6, 2010

InfraWare, Inc., a leading provider of medical transcription software solutions, today unveiled First Draft 2011, a new release of its innovative back-end speech recognition software that fundamentally improves the way healthcare professionals and transcription editors interact with protected health information (PHI). From automatic author evaluation and enrollment, to a phased implementation approach that accelerates utilization, First Draft 2011 has been enhanced to speed successful implementation and let transcriptionists transition smoothly to editing.

First Draft 2011 is the most Advanced Automated Speech Recognition system:

Advanced Technology – It’s been nearly 7 years since First Draft first debuted, and years of research and some of the best brains in speech science have made First Draft 2011 the advanced automated speech recognition service that it is today. Despite the sophisticated nature of speech recognition, First Draft 2011 “brain” works behind the scenes to convert audio input into a first draft document that speeds up editing – as much as two times faster than conventional typing.  Automatic Evaluation & Enrollment – First Draft 2011 automatically evaluates each dictating author and then enrolls each author into a recommended implementation slot. This automated process creates an optimized implementation sequence that accelerates First Draft 2011 utilization. This means First Draft 2011 reduces the risk often associated with traditional ASR implementations.  New User Interface – The latest release of First Draft makes it easier than ever to tune the system to the unique requirements of various authors. An advanced administrative console provides a set of custom dials that allow the administrator to tune and optimize First Draft’s speech recognition engine.  Extensive Reporting – First Draft 2011 offers a comprehensive suite of reports that include production, quality and business performance data. These reports enable management to evaluate author and editor performance, pinpoint areas needing improvement and the business impact of First Draft 2011. “Since First Draft debuted nearly 7 years ago, it has truly transformed from a concept to an integral component in meeting the demands of today’s healthcare documentation market,” said Nick Mahurin, CEO, InfraWare, Inc. “Our goal with First Draft 2011 was to make the software fast to implement while facilitating the transition from transcription to editing. By meeting these goals, First Draft 2011 enables our customers and their clients to realize the promise of ASR.”

First Draft Background

InfraWare first introduced back-end speech recognition for the healthcare community in 2004. Back-end recognition describes technology that allows physicians to dictate without changing their behavior (without interacting with recognition software) and performs ASR in the datacenter sometime after dictation and prior to transcription for the purpose of accelerating the transcription process. Over the years, the company has improved the performance of the First Draft service through three prior generations.

About InfraWare, Inc.

InfraWare is one of the medical transcription industry's fastest-growing ASP software companies serving Medical Transcription Service Organizations (MTSOs). InfraWare is not owned by-nor does it compete with MTSOs. The fast, powerful, easy-to-use InfraWare 360 ASP platform was developed with input from hundreds of MTSO customers, enabling them to quickly and accurately produce more lines of transcription with each MT and better serve the needs of their physician and hospital clients. MedSurge Advances Announces MesoMassage(TM), a New Technology for Reducing Stubborn Fat Deposits: New Method of Mesotherapy Enables Painless Delivery of Fat-Burning Ingredients to Larger Treatment Areas, Such as the Thighs, Abdomen and Buttocks

MedSurge Advances, the nation's largest independent provider of aesthetic medicine products and services to physicians, today announced the introduction of MesoMassage(TM), a new method of delivering the benefits of mesotherapy through a combination of electrotherapy and ultrasound technologies.

DALLAS (PRWEB) August 7, 2007

"Mesotherapy is effective in delivering naturally produced fat-burning ingredients to specific areas of the body," said Pascal Servell, clinical director of MedSurge Advances. "However, it traditionally has been injected through hypodermic needles, and can require many injections to have a noticeable impact on appearance.

"Now, with MesoMassage, we can deliver these ingredients painlessly, opening pathways through the skin without needles to burn fat in larger areas where cellulite, stubborn fat deposits and unsightly bulges reside."

Mesotherapy utilizes a cocktail of fat-burning ingredients such as phosphatydilcholine and deoxycholate to act as "fat detergents," targeting adipose fat cells by inducing rupture and cell death among adipocytes. Mesotherapy is an effective treatment for cellulite reduction, liposculpting and body contouring practiced by about 18,000 physicians worldwide.

Until now, the primary limitation of mesotherapy has been that it requires multiple injections to be effective. Each injection delivers the active ingredients to an area about the size of a quarter. As a result of the pain, swelling and other disadvantages associated with hypodermic needles, patients often tolerate treatment to only small areas of the body.

Because MesoMassage eliminates the need for multiple hypodermic injections, it is more practical to apply to large areas of the body than traditional mesotherapy. MesoMassage combines electric and ultrasonic waveforms to open pathways through the skin, enabling the painless delivery of mesotherapy ingredients to problem areas such as the thighs, abdomen and buttocks.

Sydney, NSW (PRWEB) October 13, 2008

ByTheDozen. com. au (http://www. bythedozen. com. au/site/bythedozen-aboutus. asp) is a brand new website offering unrivalled flexibility when buying wine online. It caters for wine lovers at all levels -- from avid consumers to absolute connoisseurs. It's arguably the most practical, user friendly online wine shop in the country -- it's simple, easy to navigate and uncluttered. By The Dozen have designed 3 easy steps to buying boutique wine online (http://www. bythedozen. com. au/site/bythedozen. com. au) Whether you know what you are looking for or you'd like personalised advice from the team of aficionados, By The Dozen can help.

This neat business idea was dreamed up by Veronica and David Webster, a husband and wife team whose self confessed "healthy wine addiction" was borne out of an obsession for brilliant boutique wine. They have spent much time exploring wine regions, hunting for gems produced by boutique wineries in both Australia and abroad. Their novel wine service caters for every palate, covering everything from a big Barossa Shiraz to a citrus Hunter Semillon or a dry Cotes de Provence French Rose.

From sharing their knowledge and passion for brilliant wine with friends, they were inspired to share their enthusiasm and experience with a wider audience: "We have been recommending wine to friends and family for many years so it was upon public demand that we decided to channel our passion into a business," says David Webster.

By The Dozen has grown entirely by word of mouth, it's had an underground effect. Those in the know have been enjoying their fne wine selections and spreading the word amongst their friends and colleagues. Customers trust their recommendation and appreciate their personal touch and all round commitment to quality service.

As a truly independent wine retailer, each wine in their unique range has been personally selected by David and Veronica to earn the 'brilliant' title. By The Dozen only stocks what they consider to be the best quality representations of each grape varietal across different price points and wine regions of note. This guarantees the perfect wine to suit every palate and budget.

By The Dozen have designed 3 easy steps to customise and buy wine online:

1) Simply select by colour -- white wine, red wine or mixed.

2) Select your favourite variety(ies), and finally

3) Confirm your average bottle price.

Or even simpler, trust the judgement of this dynamic duo and select one of By The Dozen's monthly boutique mixed dozens (http://www. bythedozen. com. au/site/bythedozen-specials. asp) featuring exciting new wines in a great mix of styles. Either way, you're guaranteed excellent quality wine and great value.

New Plan Offers Seniors, Disabled Low Cost or Free Drugs

New Plan Offers Seniors, Disabled Low Cost or Free Drugs

A New FEDERAL Medicare Program offering Free and Discounted drugs begins June 1 with much confusion and political infighting. A new book cuts through the political rhetoric and red tape.

KERNVILLE, CA (PRWEB) May 28, 2004

Senior Citizens and disabled persons on Medicare will now have the opportunity to get most of their prescription medications at a special discount beginning June 1. The program, referred to, as “Medicare-Approved Drug Discount Cards” is the first step in the Federal Medicare program to insure prescriptions for people on Medicare beginning 2006.

The program is a political football. Both sides of the political aisle are calling fouls in an attempt to either take credit or discredit the opposite party in this election year.

The program is a major new benefit for seniors, and seniors will do well to take advantage of the savings it provides. However, strong political and commercial interests are pressuring seniors to choose between dozens of choices available and this has had the effect of scaring many seniors away from considering these valuable discount cards.

Cutting through the red tape and political rhetoric is a new book “Understanding the New Medicare Prescription Discount Card” now available from Benefits Publications. This book joins other publications designed to assist consumers in saving money on pharmacy. Authored by Harry P. Thal, a Certified Senior Advisor and health insurance specialist, the reader is guided through the process of selecting the best card to suit his or her needs. The author provides a free certificate with each book. The reader is asked to complete a few basic questions on the certificate, and the publisher then sends by return mail recommendations as to the best discount card program for that particular person. This service is free for the first three medications, and a nominal charge ($1) for additional drugs.

“Understanding the New Medicare Prescription Discount Card” can be ordered from Benefits Publications, Post Office Box 2137, Kernville, CA 93238-2137; Credit Card orders call 800-649-2122 or fax toll free 866-409-1161. The price is $12.00. Add $2.50 shipping/handling. California residents add.87 sales tax.
