The Best Practices Xchange ("BPX") (www. BestPracticesXchange. com) met on Friday, February 22, 2008 for a one day summit which was attended by a "Who's Who" of top Strategic Sourcing, Procurement, and Supply Chain Executives. This session focused on "Sourcing Professional Services", where BPX members explored how they effectively source professional services within today's volatile sourcing and supply-chain environment.

Healthy Living for Moms is showing their support for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month by providing ways to know more about the "Silent Killer". Early detection increases the survival rate of ovarian cancer and knowing the signs and symptoms can help women seek treatment in time.

Healthy Living for Moms, a website devoted to helping mothers live a healthier life through nutrition and fitness today announced their support of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month with a special focus in September to educate women about early detection of ovarian cancer. Knowing the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer could help more women seek treatment in time to survive this deadly cancer.

Our family received her diagnosis in an emergency room after she had been admitted for pain in her abdomen. We had no idea she had this horrible cancer. A week later, she died. Known as “the Silent Killer”, ovarian cancer disguises itself as other health problems and as a result many women go undiagnosed until it’s too late for treatment. When treated early, most women enjoy a 90% survival rate. Increased awareness could result in more women becoming a survivor.

The 5-year survival rate is higher than 90 percent for ovarian cancer patients whose disease is caught during the first stage of development. Most ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, however, because no reliable screening test exists for the disease. Because the early signs of ovarian cancer are easy to miss and often resemble the signs of other conditions, it is important for women to talk with their doctors about detection and be aware of the risk factors and symptoms of this cancer.

World renowned epidemiologist Prof. Dr. Aurangzeb Hafi has voluntarily conducted an extensive research in Tsunami Affected coastal areas and has given alarming details.

The survey, known as the Tsunami ‘Child Retardation Risk Assessment’ [CRRA] was primarily devised to detect, examine and gauge the risk of child retardation in the children below 5 years as well as in the unborn babies, in the post disaster situation. It also covered the essential analysis of drinking water and its contaminations, after the crucially poisonous water being absorbed by the soil.[2]



All of the research work during CRRA & CRRM, which, actually requires a number of institutional superfluity, has been executed almost single-handedly by the splendid researcher of Pakistan.



Pof. Dr. Aurangzeb Hafi is the first South Asian, whose name has been inscribed in the Roll of Honor in The Sovereign Royal Order of The Knights of Peace and Justice, and has been honored and knighted in the category of 'de jure'.[3] He was also one of the six researchers short-listed out of 1376 scientists belonging to 900 universities of 60 countries, and was declared as Man of the Year in Interdisciplinary Sciences.[4]



On completion of the first epidemiological survey, Dr. Hafi has given an alert alarm for a vulnerable risk increase of child retardation in newly-born and unborn babies. He has emphasized upon the need of immediate action to be taken by the World Health Organization and UNICEF for this specific issue.[5]



To bring the situation under control, some special immune enhancing and nutritional supplements should be developed and should be exclusively formulated, by focusing upon, and according to the specified needs of the post disaster situation, he mentioned.



The findings of [CRRA] survey along with the elucidated suggestions made by the researcher, have been made available to conscientious international agencies for further actions to be taken upon. The TsunamiÂ’s CRRA Survey has provided a core nucleus, on which response coordination can be built. It has provided important and major issues to be raised up and dealt with.[6]



On humanitarian basis, he is willing to extend his services voluntarily, and ready to cooperate with governmental and non governmental organizations to help the victims of Tsunami, he added.[7]



Dr Hafi told that the extensive research project was a joint venture of two non governmental platforms namely MAVSO Intl. and English Biscuit Manufacturers ( Pvt ) Limited of Pakistan as a contribution from Pakistanis, for the Tsunami victims. EBM is bearing all of his expenses of lodging-boarding and air-traveling, while MAVSO Intl. is responsible for the instrumentations and equipmentations regarding the project, he told. 



To a question, he said that he is rendering his research services merely on humanitarian basis and not paid by any local or international agency.



The officials of CSGU have reportedly confirmed that he has also voluntarily declined the remunerations for his services, offered by Sri Lanka, saying that the money of his wages should be spent upon poor retardad children of the Tsunami camps.



“All services rendered by me should be considered as a sympathetic and humanitarian ‘token’ from my country…Pakistan, and not only from my own individual self “, stated the task executer researcher Prof. Aurangzeb Hafi.



Prof. Hafi has designed a well-practicable program to address the impeded setback of the specific matter.



Now a days he is on board to embark upon tracking the next phase of his project, i. e. Tsunami ‘Child Retardation Risk Management’ [CRRM]. In this phase of the project, he has also planned to provide the maximum possible quantity of the recommended nutritional supplements in Aceh, Sumatra, and Sri Lanka in an earliest possible timeframe and seeks for philanthropic help by local, regional and international institutions, donors and organizational platforms.[7]

World Vision India, a child focused Christian relief and development organization working in partnership with the poor in India has successfully completed the Phase I of their relief operations. Phase I comprised of providing the victims of the Tsunami with cooked food in camps and relief sites where they were located. World Vision is all set to help out the victims of Tsunami with the second phase of their operations by providing a ‘7-day relief packs’ to the victims affected.



“The 7-day pack’ contains 10 kgs Rice, 2 kg Lentils (dhal), 1 Ltr of Oil, Cooking Utensils, Clothes for Adults and Children and Medicines and will be distributed to over 40,000 families in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamilnadu” says Franklin Joseph, Director – Relief for World Vision India.



With the second phase in progress in more than ten locations in three states, World Vision is already looking at the long-term rehabilitation that is much needed in these affected areas. As a result of thorough assessments as well as interaction with the local governments, the affected people and other agencies in the affected locations, these five areas mentioned below are emerging as World Vision IndiaÂ’s focus for the long term;



1. Well-being of children, especially access to education



2. Livelihood security – providing fishing nets and boats for fishermen with a possibility of integrating Micro Enterprise Development into this area



3. Infrastructure - housing (temporary or permanent) and community cyclone shelters that can serve as an income generating community asset.



4. Health and sanitation



5. Psycho social care which includes counseling for the victims



World Vision India is also distributing blankets (a part of the package) to over 1000 families in the village of Talangudda, a village by the seaside in the district of Cuddalore that faced the brunt of the rising seas. In Chennai, close to 1000 families in the Gandhi Nagar slum, which was affected by water backing up into a sewage canal due to the tsunami, received the ‘7-day pack’ from World Vision India on 29th of December.



Apart from Tamil Nadu, World Vision was invited by the Government of Kerala to be the lead agency in responding to the disaster in Kollam district on the west coast of India where the Tsunami had wreaked havoc. The Pathanamthitta ADP (Area Development Program), The Sahyan Valley ADP and Allepey-Kottayam ADP were the involved in relief operations.



“We have committed 5% of our ADP budget to add to the funds that will be provided by the government to provide clean drinking water and sanitation facilities”, says Jomon Baby, Programme Manager, Pathanamthitta ADP.



World Vision has also submitted a proposal for US$ 2 million to carry out this massive aid effort seeking funds from World Vision offices around the world as well as ECHO, Japanese government, Hong Kong government and CIDA. In India, World Vision is appealing to Indians around the country through it National Resources Development team to help fund this proposal.

SpaFinder's State of Spa Travel Survey: Economy Impacting Spa Travel in '09, But Travel Agents Optimistic for Strengthening Over Rest of Year



2009: the year of the spa travel deal -- travelers overwhelmingly seek both 'pampering' and wellness

According to SpaFinder's (http://www. spafinder. com) third-annual State of Spa Travel survey released today, travel agents experienced a strong year for spa travel in a tough 2008, but report the industry was measurably impacted in the first half of 2009 as the economy's downward spiral quickened. However, agents also indicated that they see light at the end of the tunnel, and forecast strengthening for the sector across the remainder of the year.



Highlights from SpaFinder's survey on emerging spa travel trends include: 2009 is shaping up to be an unprecedented year for spa travel deals; wellness and traditional 'pampering' are not opposing categories, as both are of paramount importance to spa travelers today; and the late-2008 AIG scandal had a relatively modest, but lingering, impact on business spa travel.



"While it's hardly surprising that the 2009 economy has impacted spa travel, compared with other travel sectors it continues to show resilience," said Susie Ellis, president of SpaFinder. "After all, spa industry research concurs that the number one reason people go to spas is to de-stress, and today people are more stressed than ever. With consumers increasingly perceiving their health and wellness as a 'need' rather than a mere 'want' - combined with this historic year for spa deals - you have a recipe for relative industry strength."



SpaFinder's State of Spa Travel survey was conducted with travel professionals in June and July of 2009, and is designed to illuminate unfolding developments in spa travel, including pricing, consumer adoption, demographics, and popular locations and amenities.



KEY FINDINGS:



Economic Impact: Strong 2008, Challenging First-Half 2009, Optimism for Strengthening by Year-End



In 2008, a significant majority of agents (69%) reported no declines in spa travel bookings, with (35%) reporting spa travel held steady with 2007's numbers, while 34% reported a year-over-year increase. First-half 2009 tells a different story: 58% reported declines year-over-year through June, but only one in five agents reported that spa travel declined 'significantly.' And travel agents are optimistic about a second-half strengthening: 66% predict no overall declines for full-year 2009 - and while 34% do expect declines, only 7% report they will be 'significant.'



The Year of the Deal



In 2008, 70% of agents reported that spa resorts were lowering rates and rolling out more special deals than in years past - but this year that number jumped to 90%. And 57% report that spas are offering 'historically' or 'significantly' more aggressive deals than ever before. This industry strategy precisely matches what travelers are actively seeking: agents report that the number one change in spa traveler's behavior in 2009 has been 'seeking significant deals,' followed by 'opting for shorter vacations,' and 'traveling closer to home.'



Price-Per-Night Trending Down



Wallet-consciousness (http://www. spafinder. com/spaguide/readerschoice/categorydetail. jsp? award=Affordability&year=2008) is also reflected in the most frequently booked per-night price: 74% of spa travel booked in '09 falls under $299 a night, and price ranges over $300 all experienced declines from 2008. Last year, 60% of spa travel fell in the $250-$399 range, while this year 60% falls in the lower $200 to $299 range.*



Wellness or 'Benefit' Travel Continues to Spike



Health and wellness spa offerings continue to rank as a critical factor for travelers, with 83% of agents reporting it's either 'very' or 'somewhat' important to their clients. But spa travelers demand both wellness and 'pampering' elements. 96% of agents report 'traditional pampering' elements also rank as important. Spirituality offerings (http://www. spafinder. com/spaguide/readerschoice/categorydetail. jsp? award=MindBodySpirit&year=2008) (yoga, meditation, etc.) are also gaining in importance. And with consumers sensitive about the economy and justifying their spending, 52% of agents report that travelers are notably more interested in 'benefit' vacations (hitting a spa for tangible benefits like weight loss (http://www. spafinder. com/spaguide/readerschoice/categorydetail. jsp? award=WeightLoss&year=2008), fitness, etc.) in 2009.



The 'AIG Effect'



With well-publicized criticism of AIG's spa resort 'spree' in late '08, agents were queried on its impact on their group business/corporate spa travel. While 55% report the AIG story had some impact on their clients' travel decisions, 45% reported it had no effect. However, this relatively modest 'AIG Effect" has exhibited staying power: 76% report it's either remained an issue or escalated for their clients since.



Emerging Trends



Agents reports that 'social spa-ing' (groups/friends traveling to the spa together), an increase in travelers seeking health/wellness elements, and people choosing spas as destinations for special occasions like honeymoons, weddings, etc. rank as the top three emerging 2009 trends.



Spa Access Still #1 Consideration for Travelers

He has been a systems admin with consumer goods giant Unilever, as well as a consultant for the State of CT's Dept. of Corrections, Dept. of Mental Health, and Dept. of Education. In his spare time, Joseph is an avid reader of theology, general science, history, and technology books, and enjoys nothing so much as sailing on Long Island Sound with his family.
