Dobbs Ferry, N. Y. (Vocus) November 8, 2010

Dr. Alfred S. Posamentier, dean of Mercy College’s School of Education, explores the history and importance of the Pythagorean Theorem in his recently released book “The Pythagorean Theorem: The Story of Its Power and Beauty.”

According to Dr. Posamentier, the book “presents this glorious, and perhaps most important, mathematical relationship and examines its history, some intuitive proofs, applications in geometry, and many of its surprising aspects.”

“It’s also an excellent illustration of how math can be fun,” said Dr. Posamentier, author and co-author of 53 mathematics books.

More than 300 pages, the book explores the theorem’s history, beginning with a brief look at Pythagoras and the early use of the Pythagorean Theorem by the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Indians and Chinese. It further examines the ingenious ways in which the theorem has been proved and demonstrates some of the curious applications it has been used for throughout the centuries. The book concludes with a look at the theorem from a non-mathematical point of view, exploring the many ways it manifests itself through nature and even in music.
