Leading manufacturer of feed and timing screws (http://www. morrison-chs. com/beta/timingscrews/index. html) as well as change parts (http://www. morrison-chs. com/beta/changeparts/index. html), Morrison Container Handling Solutions, President Nick Wilson spoke at the Mexican Chamber of Processed Food (CANAINCA) convention last month in Cancun, Mexico. The presentation for CANAINCA (May 27–30, 2010) was the first of two international addresses Wilson presented over the past month in his role as Vice Chairman of PMMI. The second talk was during PACKOLOGY, sponsored by the Italian Packaging Association (UCIMA) in Rimini, Italy, in early June.
Morrison has been a member of PMMI since 1995. Due to this, Wilson was able to draw on PMMI research to address three vital trends among consumer packaged goods companies (CPGs) in the United States. Wilson told the Mexican food processors in attendance about trends in CPG concerns, including food safety, health and wellness and sustainable packaging.
Wilson stated, "These are some of the top priorities of CPG firms at the corporate level, and I’m pretty sure that many of them are familiar to you and your business as well.”
He continued, "These issues truly reflect the global nature of the supply chain we all belong to."
Wilson also noted that PMMI's data on CPG trends comes from PMMI's Vision 2015 focus groups, the annual Top to Top meeting, the Packaging Management Council, and the Grocery Manufacturers Association.
“As an association serving this industry, one of PMMI’s objectives is to connect users and suppliers of technology, and help them in optimizing their operations and product development,” he added.
Wilson also spoke to American students and Italian journalists the PACKOLOGY trade show in Rimini, Italy (June 8–11, 2010) about training and education and the central role played in the packing and processing industries for the future.
Here, he noted, “To keep this industry strong, we need to invest in developing the skills of our workforce, but equally important is striking a balance between nurturing the next generation of employees while developing the skills of those who are currently working in the sector.”
He continued, stating the range of educational opportunities PMMI provides, from financial assistance — e. g., scholarships and grants for students, bringing packaging students to the PACK EXPO shows, and tuition reimbursement for members’ employees — to online education and hands-on workshops.
“Not all learning occurs in a formal classroom setting,” Wilson explained. “PMMI is committed to providing high quality, easily accessible education opportunities for the packaging and processing industries. We strongly believe that innovation is driven through the success of our people — and so we work hard to provide programs and services.”
