Author Harry E. Gilleland, Jr. has used northern Louisiana as the setting for his new contemporary romance novel entitled White Lightning Road. The cities of Shreveport, Ruston, and Monroe are locations in the novel, as well as rural highway LA146. This highway has an interesting history.
Moonshiners ran hooch up and down the roads around Lincoln and Claiborne Parishes during the 1920’s when these counties were dry by law. The parishes’ authorities wanted to construct a road running from Vienna in Lincoln Parish to Homer in Claiborne Parish. So, all the men that were arrested for transporting moonshine were sentenced to hard labor building this road. These convicted bootleggers had to cut down by hand all the trees to clear a roadway through the woods, clear the tree stumps and undergrowth, level the ground, burn the debris, and make the road using only shovels and mule-drawn skids. They made it as a dirt road in the 1920’s. Locally, it was called "White Lightning Road." It was made into a gravel road sometime in the 50’s and was finally paved in the 60’s.
"White Lightning Road" is the story of two best friends, Jennifer James and Sally Jeffers. Each was an urban teenager whose family moved to White Lightning Road, where they became life-long friends. They hated life in rural Louisiana. Upon graduation from high school, each escaped back to the big-city life they love. Now a family tragedy has brought Jennifer back to White Lightning Road. Soon she is embroiled in a mystery involving her neighbor Michael Garrott, a man widely believed to be an unpunished murderer. Thus begin the romantic adventures of both Jenny and Sally. It is a tale of mystery and romance.
