City Club of Portland Gives Journalists Forum to 'Rant' June 10
At its weekly Friday Forum luncheon on June 10, City Club of Portland presents a program titled "Rant 2: What Will We Hear This Time?" a second installment of the popular forum in which three local journalists have an open microphone and free reign to speak their minds about a variety of topics, from local culture to national politics. Then the tables are turned when City Club members in the audience choose discussion topics.

At its weekly Friday Forum luncheon on June 10, City Club of Portland presents a program titled "Rant 2: What Will We Hear This Time?" a second installment of the popular forum in which three local journalists have an open microphone and free reign to speak their minds about a variety of topics, from local culture to national politics. Then the tables are turned when City Club members in the audience choose discussion topics.
On this year's panel are: Sheila Hamilton, news director and afternoon co-host at KINK-FM. S. Renee Mitchell, columnist at The Oregonian; and Henry Stern managing news editor at Willamette Week.
City ClubÂ’s Friday Forum, which is open to the public, will be held in the Governor Hotel (614 S. W. 11th Ave.). Doors open at 11:30 a. m. Program begins at 12:15 p. m. and concludes at 1:15 p. m. Luncheon tickets are $18 ($16 for members of City Club). Coffee/tea table tickets are $5 at the door. General seating, available at the door, is $5 (free for members of City Club).

About Sheila hamilton
Hamilton is news director and afternoon co-host at KINK FM 102. She's one of the few journalists in town who has tried out nearly every media form; she's worked in television as an investigative news reporter, anchor and producer, and hosted her own talk radio show for two years. She contributes articles to Portland Monthly magazine, and began her career as a documentary film producer for public broadcasting. Hamilton also teaches media and journalism workshops for Northwest Journalism Conference and WorkingJournalist. com.
About S. Renee Mitchell
S. Renee Mitchell is a mother of three children and an adjunct English professor at Portland State University. She writes a column twice a week for The Oregonian on Portland-related issues, ranging from neighborhoods, to schools, to politics to cultural identity. Renee tells people it's the best job she's ever had, but what really feeds her spirit is writing poetry.
Mitchell authored and self-published two books of poetry. Her company, Nappy Roots Press, publishes work of other local poets and writers. The small business also designs and sells T-shirts and greeting cards and plans Natural Hair and Self-Pampering events that celebrate the liberation of black women from their mental health issues.
Mitchell is also a playwright and recording artist. She leads a series of writing workshops — she calls them "Inner Courses" — that teaches people of all skill levels how to write poetry, journals and novels. This year, she will be offering poetry-writing workshops at two national journalism conventions, in New Orleans and Washington, D. C.
Mitchell is also an engaging public speaker, a beaded jewelry creator, a graphic designer and an artist. Her poetry and distinctive voice are being used to narrate a documentary about the flooded city of Vanport, which dramatically affected PortlandÂ’s black population.
About Henry Stern
Henry Stern has been managing news editor at Willamette Week since March after a seven-year stint at The Oregonian covering Portland's City Hall, Washington County government and education in east Multnomah County.
Before The Oregonian, Stern worked for more than a decade as a reporter with The Associated Press in his native Oregon as well as Washington, D. C. and New Jersey, where he covered everything from the Miss America Pageant to boxing.
Stern lives in Northeast Portland's Grant Park neighborhood with his wife Meg and their two children.
