The International Press Academy will bestow this honor during the 9th Annual Satellite Awards Presentation January 23, 2005, in Beverly Hills, California.
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) November 17, 2004 -
The International Press Academy (IPA) today announced that Susan Sarandon, noted actress luminary of stage, screen and television and well respected human right activist, has been named the recipient of the 2005 Mary Pickford Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to the Entertainment Industry. IPA will present the Mary Pickford Award at the Satellite Award gala set to take place January 23, 2005, at The Beverly Hills Hotel, 9641 Sunset Boulevard, Beverly Hills, California 90210-2938.
Susan Sarandon began her career as a Ford model but quickly grew weary of just being a tall and beautiful red-head with striking eyes and began to pursue acting. She made her film debut as the ill-fated hippie daughter in JOE. Ms. Sarandon built her career with solid early performances in LOVIN' MOLLY, THE FRONT PAGE and the female lead opposite Robert Redford in George Roy Hill's THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER. She attracted widespread attention for her role in the cult hit THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and earned the first of five Oscar nominations for ATLANTIC CITY, opposite Burt Lancaster.
Ms. Sarandon's early film work revealed a rare ability to be both thoughtful and sexy as evidenced by offerings such as PRETTY BABY, KING OF THE GYPSIES, COMPROMISING POSITIONS, THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK, THE HUNGER, BOB ROBERTS, CRADLE WILL ROCK. As she matured-ever so gracefullyÂshe came to embody the seductive older woman in films like BULL DURHAM, WHITE PALACE, ILLUMINATA, TWILIGHT and the recent remake of ALFIE.
Through 80Âs and 90Âs, the depth and range of her work was widely considered among the best of her generation, earning her Oscar nominations for THELMA AND LOUISE, LORENZOÂS OIL, THE CLIENT and her first Academy Award for her portrayal of an empathetic nun in DEAD MAN WALKING. In recent years, Ms. Sarandon has starred in a number of films including MOONLIGHT MILE, IGBY GOES DOWN. THE BANGER SISTERS, SHALL WE DANCE, NOEL, has recently completed principal photography on THE EXONERATED and is currently filming Cameron CroweÂs ELIZABETHTOWN.
Her appearances on the small screen include EARTHLY POSSESSIONS, ICE BOUND and DUNE. She provided one of the voices for hit animated features including JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, CATS & DOGS and RUGRATS IN PARIS in addition to narrating the documentary, 900 WOMEN.
Ms. Sarandon has had a notable stage career appearing both on Broadway and off-Broadway in productions of AN EVENING WITH RICHARD NIXON, A COUPLA WHITE CHICKS SITTING AROUND TALKINÂ, the thriller, EXTREMITIES and THE GUYS.
Ms. Sarandon is one of contemporary Hollywood's most visible activists. She lends her name, time, and presence to many political, cultural and health organizations. Time and again, she has proven to have little interest in fame for its own sake and has utilized her celebrity to promote various progressive causes, narrating or appearing in documentaries and public affairs shows related to such topics. She delighted some and infuriated others when, at the 1993 Academy Awards presentation, she took 28 seconds to speak in behalf of Haitian refugees with AIDS and has been a noted advocate for peace during times of strife.
