First Candle (formerly the SIDS Alliance) has been a key partner in the national Back To Sleep campaign, credited with reducing SIDS rates nationwide by nearly 60% - the equivalent of sparing 3,500 precious lives each year. In 2001 the Board of Directors voted to expand the mission of the organization to include all sudden infant deaths during the prenatal period through age 2 Â including stillbirth and miscarriage. According to Dr. Marian Sokol, President of First Candle, ÂThere are more than 26,000 stillbirth deaths in the United States each year, and very little is being done to understand why. It is our goal to take the knowledge and experience we have gained in fighting SIDS to save even more precious lives.Â
