The Dental Assistant students at Pima Medical Institute, 957 S. Dobson Road in Mesa hope to get to the “tooth” of the matter of dental hygiene by doing free outreach to teach proper brushing and flossing techniques to kids during February, National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Teachers, or others who work with children, are encouraged to call Rhonda Miller at 480-644-0267 to set up an appointment to have the dental assistant students interact with the children while providing useful information on proper oral hygiene.

“Children who learn proper dental hygiene at an early age are much more likely to continue those habits throughout their lives,” said Christopher Luebke, campus director for the Mesa career college. “It’s really a win/win situation for all as the children will learn how to care for their teeth, and our students will receive hands-on experience working in their field. Our students are ready to reach out and help more children than ever during February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month.”

The training period for dental assistants is 30 weeks for day classes for day classes, or 33 weeks for evening classes. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for Dental Assistants is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2012.
