Reedville Cafe, an independently owned landmark neighborhood restaurant known for its seasonal American cuisine and casual family-friendly dining (http://www. reedvillecafe. com), is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a retro menu, special discounts and promotions, free birthday sundaes and more. The family-owned business is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of Reedville Catering, a full-service off-premises catering (http://www. reedvillecatering. com/menus2.html) company, popular among Portland Metro area businesses. Reedville Cafe and Reedville Catering are located at the corner of SE Tualatin Valley Hwy. and SW Cornelius Pass Road in Hillsboro, near Aloha and Beaverton, and a short commute from downtown Portland.
“We credit our long-term success to a loyal clientele, consistently good food and an extensive menu that appeals to all ages. Our exceptional staff, many of whom have been with us for over a decade and know our customers by name, know what they want to eat and drink before they even sit down," says owner Rick Van Beveren. Comfortable indoor and outdoor seating and seasonal specials also are important. “We’re known for our use of fresh local ingredients and food items including soups and dressings prepared in our own kitchen, as well as our kids menu, signature desserts made from scratch, a full bar, and a popular Happy Hour (http://www. reedvillecafe. com/happyhour. html) menu that is served throughout the Cafe.”
Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, “we strive to provide our customers with a good social and dining experience, and that means evolving with the times,” says Van Beveren. "Current trends include the use of locally sourced and farm-fresh ingredients (http://www. reedvillecafe. com/specials. html) from produce, berries and nuts to bison and salmon, and more attention to health such as making smaller and half portions available.” The Cafe's August Specials Menu celebrates this new focus on local ingredients, offering items such as Smoked Salmon Hash, Hazelnut Waffles topped with farm fresh Unger Strawberries, an L-Bar-T Bison Burger on a nine-grain bun and Homemade Blueberry Pie using local blueberries in season. Other seasonal month-long specials menus include Oktoberfest in October, CrabFest in January, SteakFest in April, and Sizzlin’ Summer BBQ in July.
"We have turned to the internet (https://app. e2ma. net/app/view:Join/signupId:37116) and social media to help us continue to build our customer base, sending email offers (like free birthday gift certificates) to our loyal customers, special offers to our Facebook fans, and having websites that feature monthly specials, discount offers, and occasional online coupons. Positive reviews on Yelp, Urban Spoon and other restaurant review sites have also helped spread the word," adds Van Beveren.
Reedville Cafe and Reedville Catering are community-oriented businesses, having been longtime sponsors of the Oregon International Air Show (http://www. oregonairshow. com/partners. html) and supporters of many Washington County based non-profits including Vision Action Network of Washington County, Hillsboro Community Foundation, Hillsboro Schools Foundation, Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce, and the Portland Rose Festival. Having served on the board of these organizations, Van Beveren currently serves as President of the Tri Met Board of Directors.
The Reedville Cafe has been a neighborhood gathering place since its origins in 1934 as the Shack Tavern. In 1950 Al and Polly Van Beveren bought the Shack Tavern and started serving hamburgers, fried chicken, fresh whole Dungeness crab on newspaper (in season), and Blitz beer (for 10 cents a glass back in the 50s). Many locals fondly remember The Crab Shack, a fresh seafood market, located just west of the present Cafe, also owned by the Van Beverens. Son Rick has run the business since 1978, remodeling and expanding the kitchens, dining rooms and outdoor areas several times.
