Stamford, CT (PRWEB) October 20, 2010
More than 72 million Americans are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Area residents who find themselves struggling with obesity and weight loss options can now find help locally at Stamford Hospital's Center for Surgical Weight Loss, where a team of weight management specialists assist patients through a safe and seamless weight loss journey.
Stamford Hospital's program currently offers four types of laparoscopic weight loss surgery:
Laparoscopic gastric bypass - The stomach is stapled to form a small pouch. The remaining stomach and part of the intestinal tract is bypassed, making the patient feel full more quickly. Laparoscopic gastric banding - An adjustable silicone band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach and is slowly tightened to promote a sense of fullness on fewer calories. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy - The left side of the stomach is surgically removed making the new stomach the size and shape of a banana, resulting in a decrease in the amount of calories consumed. Laparoscopic duodenal switch - The size of the stomach is reduced while the small intestine is rearranged to separate the flow of food from the flow of digestive juices.
In addition to a physician consultation, a nurse practitioner, registered dietitian, psychologist and exercise physiologist will provide weight loss surgery patients with nutritional consultation, psychological evaluation and support, fitness counseling, and the basic knowledge and skills needed to achieve the best possible results. Non-surgical bariatric weight loss services ranging from seminars and community education to dietary and diabetes counseling will also be offered.
Unique to our surgical weight loss program is the option for patients to utilize pre-surgery treatments such as Reiki, massage, lifestyle coaching, mind-body therapies and acupuncture at Stamford Hospital's Center for Integrative Medicine & Wellness. Before and after surgery, patients have access to state-of-the-art exercise equipment, 25-yard lap pool, therapeutic pool and jacuzzi and weight management, nutrition and health classes at the Hospital's Health and Fitness Institute. Both facilities are conveniently located at the Tully Health Center. A 90-day complementary membership is offered through the Health and Fitness Institute.
Dr. Daniel Davis, Stamford Hospital's Director of Bariatric Surgery, oversees the Center for Surgical Weight Loss. Dr. Davis most recently served as the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, NY and Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ and currently is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia University.
