Welch Says Change in Washington Necessary to Provide Checks and Balances
US House of Representative hopeful Peter Welch wants to fill the lone Vermont seat. In an interview on Vermont Viewpoint Online he says that the current Administration is upside down on environmental issues and that the one party control in place is causing the US to have diminished standing in the world.

In an interview on “Vermont Viewpoint Online”, Peter Welch (D) says that it is time for a change in Washington DC so there is more of a check and balance system in place.
Welch is running to fill the US House of Representative seat left vacant by Bernie Sanders (I), remarks that there is “a lot we’ve got to change down there”. He refers to the one-party control that Republicans have in the House, the Senate, the Supreme Court, and, of course, the Presidency and says that the Republican leadership is “pretty extreme”.
His goal is to be elected and to help bring back a balance that he says is missing.
When asked by host Don Lewellen why is running, Welch says that there are bad policies at the federal level that have brought harm to our state and others and that the Bush Administration has diminished our standing world-wide. He also talks about what he calls an upside down environmental policy and says that he was “astonished” when an $11 Billion bill was passed to give tax breaks to gas and oil companies.
Other issues covered in the interview were the federal debt, universal health care, energy, Medicare D (where he wants to change the wording in the law from the government ‘prohibited’ from negotiating for bulk pricing discount drugs to ‘required’), and Social Security.
Welch has served in the Vermont Senate from 1980-1988 and then again from 2001 to the present. He was elected as President Pro Tem from 1985 through 1988 and 2002 to the present. He will face the winner of the Republican primary in the November election.
