If you have ever wondered if a nutritious pregnancy diet plan should include omega 3 supplements, then you’ll want to check out certified nutritionist Isabel De Los Rios’ new educational video series What to Eat While Pregnant.
The Journal of American Medical Association recently published findings of a study conducted by researchers at the Women’s and Children’s Health Research Institute in North Adelaide, Australia. Researchers set out to further examine claims that omega 3 fatty acids help prevent postpartum depression and boost fetal neurological development. Unfortunately, the study concluded that omega 3 supplements don’t offer mothers and their babies these benefits.
Researchers are struggling to understand these findings in light of previous studies which revealed that women who ate fish during pregnancy reduced their risk of postpartum depression and that fetal brain development benefited.
A Wall Street Journal article focusing on the recent research speculated that perhaps “eating fish is better than taking fish-oil supplements or that women who opt to eat fish are generally healthier and engage in other health-promoting behaviors.”
Certified nutritionist Isabel De Los Rios agrees with this conclusion saying, “Omega 3 fats have really become all the rage and really they are as great as everyone says they are, especially during pregnancy.”
But, continues De Los Rios, “I’m a really strong believer that your body absorbs more vitamins and minerals from real food than it does from any supplement.”
In her new educational video series What to Eat While PregnantDe Los Rios encourages mothers-to-be to eat omega 3 dense foods including very low mercury fish like sardines, anchovies and wild salmon. Organic eggs, flaxseeds and walnuts are also a good source of omega 3 fatty acids according to De Los Rios.
Isabel De Los Rios earned a pre-med degree in exercise physiology from Rutgers University and is a certified Holistic Nutrition Lifestyle Coach. Her all-natural, scientifically-based weight loss plan The Diet Solution Program has helped more than 50,000 people lose weight permanently.
